When to upgrade your motor?

Out of curiosity I thought I would ask all you long time boat owners when you decide its time to upgrade your donk!

What becomes your deciding factor assuming that the motor you currently have hasnt been causing you any greif "touch wood"

* Motor age
* Hours clocked up
* Or just to change from two to four stroke or e-tec.

And if you have had a outboard motor from new when is the best time to upgrade to get the best value for your trade in i.e maximum age and hours.

Cheers

Upgrade when it starts costing you too much money in repairs and it becomes to unreliable, fishing out 40km and only having one donk I think having a motor you can trust is the most important thing? I purchased my boat with the idea of repowering it but the motor runs sweat so
I'll run it till it needs $$ spent on it and then upgrade. It has a 175hp two stroke and will replace with a 200hp big block etec. The two stroke is worth about $5000 and the new donk is about $20,000 so I'll keep my $15,000 and put up with the thirsty big girl for a little longer until I don't
trust it any more.

I up graded mine when the MOFO wouldn't start , even after wearing down 3 batteries and a crap load of aerostart etc , so I rang a good mate and 3 weeks later we had fitted the new 60 to my tub .

I now start my motor and run it for 5 mins every Sunday unless I'm out fishing .

I recon if you don't regularly start and run the motor you are looking for trouble when next you go out in the boat and expect it to work flawlessly .
