Where's the love

Seems lately that a whole heap of haters have joined Fishwrecked.

Bitching & fighting about old injuries, sounding a guy out because he wants to sell his ute.

Whats wrong with everyone??

Fishing is supposed to be a relaxing alternative to the realities of life.

Maybe it's time we all chilled out & started ' feeling the love' again.

sadly the site is being used for some people to vent pent up anger to all the fishwrecked members (and i include myself) we are bonded together on this site by our mutual love of our sport, fishing. there are enough detractors and snipers out in the wider community waiting their chance to attack the fishing and hunting faternity without us doing it to fellow fishermen/women/kids.

if you can help a fellow member then we all should do it, it will strenthen the bond of our sporting persuit

Seems the safety of the net is away of releasing ones daily frustrations on others. If the tempo was a bit cooler, perhaps some of those longer serving members would re start making contributions, instead of just sitting on the fence, which I'm sure they're doing, rather than becomming embroiled in child like verbal clashes.

It happens, that's why I wander around to different forums at times. Most online forums go through stages and even mini wars :-] which you can ignore, choose a side or go elsewhere for the duration. Have tried em all but the best thing I find is to just go fishing and forget about any crap where ever it is coming from.

Wed, 2012-02-08 20:12

You see a good fish pic put up,the haters jump on it ,the post gets locked down and they dont post another one.A sad state of affairs when you cant just congratulate someone on a great capture without others sticking the knee in the nuts.If you pick on a guy thats caught a big dhu then go up north and put a spanish flag on for bait or leave a blowfish on the beach or jetty you need to re think your position. All in all most get along and that goes for ALL the forums when you take the time to communicate rather than hate.Have you ever timed yourself while typing "this thread in locked" then tried to beat that time on the next thread adam?

Wed, 2012-02-08 20:22

Has to be locked or comments deleted because these things dont right themselves and things deteriorate further and everything becomes hate. Ive seen it happen on many other sites and these things need to be controlled before they get out of control, it has worked successfully for the last 6 years. I just havent had the time to dedicate to maintaining this control lately as ive been flat out, but things are going to change to get rid of this 'angry' culture that seems to be developing.

Make a positive comment / contribution.

Wed, 2012-02-08 21:08

It's an interesting point being raised- Some members like to rack up numbers of posts ( perhaps they believe they have lots of insight or at least wish to give that impression). Personally I do more reading and contribute when I can assist or believe I can offer something to the thread - some may criticise me and say thats not often, but its only their opinion so I'm not gonna take it to heart.

I spend countless hours on this forum, it gives me a little bit of relief after the stupid amount of hours I spend at work, not doing the things I love.  ie time with family and time on the water.

Positive contributions all the way!!  It prob came down to the fact that I'm under the pump trying to get stupid deadlines finished at work...   Bring on Saturday, I hope the weather keeps looking this good.

Thu, 2012-02-09 08:24

Guys it's a great site/forum for newbies like me, your experience is invaluable, and you may only be posting an opinion or advise, but for me at times I can get so much out of it, and you guys may not be aware of that.

Remember knowledge is only that if you're prepared to pass it on.

What's been amusing to me is a newbie can come in and ask a completely innocent question (esp about fishing spots and coordinates), and get shot down in flames by some, but on the other hand some are more than happy to help.

What we all need to remember is we all started "somewhere"

As I get more confident i've got heaps of questions to ask about setting up my boat, getting it right and staying safe.

Thanks guys, I'm "hooked" on Fishwrecked

Cheers

 I honestly reckon this forum

Thu, 2012-02-09 09:27

I honestly reckon this forum isn't that unfriendly, i don't know what you are all complaining about lol. Compared to other forums i've been on it's quite tame.

I really do wish people would either browse through the forums a little, or use the search function before they create new threads though. It gets really frustrating when the same questions come up over and over again because people are too lazy to search. Then they complain when they get shut down for asking stupid questions.

People posting in the wrong forums also shits me to tears. We have a general discussion forum, i don't know why people insist on posting non fishing related crap in the Fishing Discussion forum... Also if you are creating a thread it would really help if you used a title that actually gives and idea of what the thread is about. Not just one word. Makes it much easier for everyone to navigate the forums and find what they are after. Same with the Classifieds forum. Put a little bit of basic info in the title and in your original post and it will not only make it a lot easier for yourself to sell the product, but also easier for the buyers.

Also people who keep fish that they don't recognise, and then post a thread asking for an ID are alwways going to get flamed...and quite rightly so imo. Why the hell would you keep something if you didn't know what it was?? Let it go, take a photo if possible, then ask on the forums or look it up in a book and if it turns out to be good eating you can keep it next time you catch it.

Thu, 2012-02-09 09:42

I think one of the biggest problems is that when you are reading text on a computer screen you cant tell if people are being serious and having a dig, or if they are being sarcastic and mean no harm. Alot of comments could be taken either way depending on how the individual reads it.
But a good thing you do see on this site is a few people arguing/discussing a topic or issue one day, but then leaving possitive comments on each others photos a few days later.

So So true

Thu, 2012-02-09 10:20

I happen to be one soul that will always look at the lighter side of life, and its easy to see that when I speak to someone. The humour is sensed.

Typing what you are feeling doesnt ever have personality, and even smiley's etc still can be deamed sarcastic and misinterpreted.

I certainly learned quickly about this years ago when I organised rally Australia. We had an email that went to everyone on the various commities. If I sent one to someone under me that understood me and my sense of humour, I was amazed at how many others got the drift wrong, saying why do you pick on him etc.

A forum is just like it, a big group email, so if I spar with someone I know, others will interpret it as a dig or fight.

I think the onus would be on the person to clarrify the position and not fight back, which leads to a thread that deteriorate and gets blocked.

Sure there are personalities that dont like each other, but a string off abuse is not what this is about. As said above it is about the love of fishing. Take the personal stuff and settle them outside.

However some of the best humour on this site is reading some of these post I have to admit. I just sit there and LMAO at some going ons.

not just here, but on other sites too of late.

lots of old axes been reground and used against folks....

some trolls back here and elsewhere under false names

and the general tall popping syndrome is at it's best!

I even got called a nasty name and told my new tub is a penis extension....  then again maybe both where complements in a strange way... lol

but for my five cents, we should stop critical posts about other who are learning, have no idea how to make Google king of the library and just give our mates a hand, pat on the back and well done for their fishing.

ps it's also the reason I fish alone most of the time...

I agree with what Crasny1 has said in that I dont think that many people intentionally go out to offend, it just sometimes comes across that way. I read some of the funniest threads ever on the weekend, some that could have been taken the wrong way, but all seemed in good humour.

Thu, 2012-02-09 10:48

Agree 100% on searching and posting in the wrong sections!!  That's what really irks me too.

There's two ways I can see to stop the negative posters, more activity from the Moderator(s), warning, suspending and banning users. And for regular members, just don't feed the trolls by responding to their useless posts. Nothing against you Adam, but I'm surprised that there's only one moderator for such a big forum.

A few members have made a quick and not-so-good impression on me (not that it concerns anybody) but they're the ones I would ignore when they ask for advice, and if I ever owned a boat they would be definitely off the deckie list!!

What I'm trying to say is, let the haters hate, cos after all the experienced members on here (I hope) sees what goes on and they exercise a bit of discretion and offer advice, help, sell items and giving deckie spots to the better behaved members.

Moderators

Thu, 2012-02-09 12:19

A big thank you from all of us for the way the site runs in general.

Its not an easy task... just ask anyone who has ever been a moderator on a forum like this (all voluntary and you need a thick skin thats for sure.)

Adam started out moderating on his own when he started the site and I think I joined in quite early on, we were both very much involved in the moderating on a daily / hourly basis as the site grew exponentially a few years back, we soon realised we needed extra moderators and from memory I think we had about 4 or 5 during the peak "under attack" phase.

Unfortunately time is a very valuable commodity for everyone and hopefully I can speak for all the moderators we have, and that is that we do actually have lives outside of the site. I personally haven't been online for quite some time due to other interests etc this past year, but I pop in daily at the moment. So it needs to be understood that the moderator team is not online all the time and unfortunately that leads to some threads getting out of hand before one of us has had a chance to view it. And I defy anyone to actually read every post as with the size of this site, it would be a full time job. In the early days Adam and I probably did read every post, but its no longer possible.

Thankfully we have eyes and ears out there (other members) helping spot potential trouble posts and thankfully bring these to our attention and we certainly take action when necessary.

I think one of the things that makes this site so successful is there is a fair degree of "self moderation" from individuals and peers, which makes the moderating job a lot easier than it was before the site and its members found its moral compass.

I think it is pretty well understood that this is a family fishing site and not a boys club. If you always keep that in the back of your mind when posting everything will run smoothly.

As for the newbies inevitable repeated threads and questions, I think its important to educate ("you will find some great info on this by using the search engine") with encouragement rather than a big stick and aggro. We were all young and clueless once.

PEACE, LOVE and ALL THAT JAZZ.

Thu, 2012-02-09 11:54

You bunch of precious whining girls, give stick when it is due, cop it when it is your turn & enjoy the banter!

Site gets bigger so it's a natural progression but one thing that makes me chuckle is the newer members coming in all fired up & blatantly offending older well respected crew whom post pics & know their stuff! Just give the noodle upstairs a reality check before you start typing / hiding behind your monitors & be prepared for backlash if you're out to flame someone (especially if you don't contribute positively & it's easy to pick who they are)

In short pick yourselves up, dust off your handbags, straighten out your Sunday frocks & get into posting up pics of fishy's / reports...

edit: no offence intended to our female members, not that you should take any as your conduct is far greater than some of the bitch fights that go on here. Can't believe my conscience made me go PC, this sh!t is making me soft

Ahh, yes - as some have already said - the security / anonymity of the net results in fluffy dice and Pom Poms turning into Brass Balls.

You could always make a monthly get-together mandatory for ongoing membership - it'd be interesting to see
a/ who turns up
b/ who pulls their heads in on the forum (ie back to fluffy dice)
c/ how many punch ups result.

Hey, we could even hire an octagon cage and have our own little UFC to settle long term disputes.
Winner gets a FW badge (Fish Wrecker)
Loser gets one too ( F#ck Wit)

And the cruisey guys just get to sit back, watch, laugh, tell lies and drink piss !

Note : I'm on my iPhone, and can't put a smiley on to show that I'm joking.
