which is the best sounder for 3m dinghy to run off a small battery
Submitted by Wahoo on Wed, 2015-03-04 08:23
Hi all, with all of the new sounders out I'm after some current advice on which sounder to get for my 3m roof-topper tinnie. It would need to be waterproof, able to be used at 60m depth max, and run off a smallish battery due to limited space. Price max $1000. And I might need a GPS too. I'm thinking of putting it on some sort of arm so that it folds back when not in use. Thanks for your advice.

If you have the navnonics app
If you have the navnonics app they have a sounder out now called SONARPHONE which looks pretty good and plays threw the app, fish finder and gps. Heaps of demo's on YouTube so I got one for my dinghy haven't attatched it yet but hope it is as good as they say. But I guess iPad or iPhone ain't water proof so may not be a good option.

Lowrance Elite 4x HDI
I put a Lowrance Elite 4x HDI on my canoe. Nice little unit with downvision and colour options .
For around $200 not bad value. The screen is small but I have no problem seeing it even in direct sunlight .
I made it portable as you can see in this thread

you can get a ram mount on eBay. which you can mount your sounder to and you can move it around on a pivot arm.

thanks lads
All good suggestions. Was looking at the elite 7 with chirp today actually. Around the same price as the raymarine.

spend the money
spend the money and get an Odesy brilliant battery , I got them in when I was at Rio marine dept they were a fraction of the weight of the century marine pros we were using and never had 1 fail while I was there , they also conveniently fitted a Harley battery box which was a bonus for me and my mates

Mate i run my Raymarine E7d
Mate i run my Raymarine E7d and lights in my tiny from a ebay cheapy 9.8ah lithium battery. Works brilliantly and about half the size of a 7ah LSA battery.
If i were going to buy a new sounder for my tiny i would opt for the non touchscreen Raymarine Dragonfly with side/downscan! Low current draw, good quality and pretty good in sunlight!
Saying that if your into Lowrance then get the Lowrance, at the end of the day what ever feels better to you is the go!
