Which rod and reels for the job?

Hey guys,

Only just getting in to deep fishing so sorry in for the novice question but need to learn somehow and the search isn't working. Just need advice on which rods and reels I should be looking at getting for jigging with plastics for snapper/dhufish and trolling for mackeral ect.

What else should I look at buying? I see people trolling with spinning reels but was told not to use the the penn 950

I would say mid range. I guess I just kind of need to know the type of rod and reels I should be looking at getting for jugging and then trolling?

Go and grab one of the shimano tcurve vertical jig sticks.  They are about $200 and good enough to get into it  two sizes you can go for are the 20-30lb and the 30-40lb.  Match it with any 4000 size spinning reel and 30lb braid and your away.  Just remember its not the sort of gear you screw your drag right down and bully fish.  These are thin graphite blanks and will break if you run too much drag.

I used one last weekend (20-30lb) and was very happy with the way it handled small sambos etc.  I didnt catch a dhuie over 450mm or so- cant help in the bigger fish department but it did feel to have plenty of power left to fight bigger fish.

Or you can lash out $500 and get something spiffy from the go and not have to worry about upgrading later.  Thats what Ive gone and done.

 No reason you cant troll

Wed, 2012-03-21 10:04

No reason you cant troll with a 950, I love trolling divers with braid on spinners and stick with skirts and mono on my OH's. All of those combos would be fine to toll for macks, tuna ect. Like Brad said you will want a lighter stronger combo to fish jigs and SP for our bottom dwellers, go and see one of the site sponsors and they will be able to help you out as there are heaps of mid level combos, i would recommend a stradic 4000 reel wise and im not a massive fan of t-curves but go and have a look whats on offer and whats well balanced with the reel.

If you go to bluewater you will probably get steered towards the daiwa stuff more and they probably have a jig rod to suit and can match you up with a decent reel.  Just ask them about a 30lb demersal jigging combo and they should steer you in the right direction.  Tell them what you have with rods and reels and sure they could get you set up.  You might have a couple of reels or a rod up for sale at the end of it.

You dont need a lighter rod

Wed, 2012-03-21 11:38

You dont need a lighter rod but you will enjoy using one more.  Plus graphite jigging rods are light in weight for their rating anyway.  Yes you can use overhead but with the light demersal jigs it might be easier using a spin outfit.  Bluewater will sort you out just go and ask lots of questions and be prepared to fork over some coin for decent gear.  No point trying to get out of it cheap if your only going to upgrade later.

yeah i might have to go in to a shop. I don't really no what I'm looking for in a reel they all look the same the only real difference I am seeing over the net is the price. You can get them from $70 to $1000++ and I wouldn't no what spinning reel is good for jigging and which one is good for 13ft beach rods. maybe someone can give me a run down?

Thu, 2012-03-22 15:24

I have a couple of rods laying around just wondering if any of them would be a good cheapy for jigging until I get some coin for a decent one. I have a silstar PF-701 SWM 7ft 8-10kg or a Penn Silver Series 6ft 3-7kg? Other than that I juts have 15-20kg plus over head rods
