Whole sand whiting as bait, what has it caught you?
Hi all,
looking for some real world examples of what whole sand whiting had landed you as far as memorable catches. I'm not looking for the old folk law story of "shark bay snapper love em" because let's be honest, when thir hungry, shark bay snapper would eat just about anything. The reason I ask is I have used whole whiting as baits whilst demersal fishing, and it doesn't even get a lick. And rest assured I have given it a go on a number of occasions now!
my personal opinion is its just not smelly and oily, therefore nothing seems to want to touch it. I must point out that whenever I have tried them as baits out deep, it's always with dead but fresh baits, and on a snelled paternoster rig. I'm asking the question as I know a few spots which hold good bait sized whiting, and am wondering whether it's worth the effort of catching some for future baits or not.
Any real world success stories or photos would be appreciated

I got the Snapper in my avatar. The first Snapper I caught was on a whole snelled floating whiting and it's still my second biggest Snapper to date. (The avatar is the biggest, about 10/15 minutes apart)

Absolutely top notch bait, caught a 10kg Dhuie on a whole one. And I will take a heap of the up north to Gnaraloo every year as they get mauled.

My biggest dhuie...
...as much as it pains me to say it coz it wasn't a lure, at 22kg, came on a whole sandie...snelled double, 8/0 thru the head, 6/0 thru the tail.
Have also caught snapper on the frames of sand whiting...best of both worlds.

Got a couple just legal
Got a couple just legal dhuies on sandy heads from the boat.
Tailor smash them from the beach both dead and alive, have also landed a couple sambos from the beach on livies as well as small sharks and rays.
One of the best live baits from the beach IMO and the boat wouldn't be too different

dhuie and break sea cod
caught a 12kg dhuie on whole sandy alway have have a dozen freshly caught on board , without doubt chunks of whiting for break sea cod

Good call on the baits for up north
Particularly because whiting don’t hold a lot of blood ect, it “should” help reduce the attraction of sharks.
looks like I might have to go and stock up on some baits after all. Cheers guys

My goto bait for reds up north trout love them aswell
Always stop for a few sandies on the way out dhuie fishing .whiting and occy 2 best baits going for dhuies

Whiting
has to be one of the best baits all around WA (and probably all of Australia). Have caught almost every NW species on YFWhiting we caught of Dampier in the shallow sand flats, but now I would rather eat them than use them for bait.
So the biggest "thing" I have caught on whiting is myself - Yum.
