Wilbinga

Anyone fished wilbinga including the areas North and south?

couple of us going on sat arvo for an overnighter....been at least 5 years since last there.

targeting tailor but will soak a bait for the yet to catch size mulla from the sand.

interested to hear how people have gone recently with hooking up and also conditions ie weed and soft sand

(will ensure take a bag of someone else's rubbish out with me - last there was glass and crap everywhere just back from the beach).

any advice/ comments appreciated.

thanks

Weed!

Fri, 2014-01-03 12:37

I was up there a couple of weeks ago but there was a lot of wind and weed. Found a spot sheltered inside of some reef and got a feed of herring and a couple of big Tarwhine but not much else going on.

I went up there on new years day but it was completely weeded out and I didn't even get a fishing rod out. Hopefully it clears up soon!

two rocks

Fri, 2014-01-03 13:32

just got back from fishing two rocks there was a bit of broken weed around not too bad, could see huge masses of it coming in with the swell and tide tho a km or so out so tomorrow could be weeded out with the sea breeze pumping. We managed a bag of tailor herring and whiting.

Cheers mate - another mate just rang me and said weed came in last night and killed fishing where he was just south Moore river mouth.....spew, might have a spy early arvo tomorrow and if too bad I'll drive north, maybe hill river and/or sand cape might be better.....maybe!

looks like midnight to early light on Saturday night/Sunday morning might be best with wind looking like dropping off for a bit.....

really want a size mulla off the sand.... Only 5 years trying on and off!

Sand was pretty soft in spots

Fri, 2014-01-03 15:03

Sand was pretty soft in spots but ok to drive on. Had tyres down to 14psi and had to get the maxtrax out once when I stopped in a really boggy spot to let another 4x4 past.

Be careful of the few dropoffs and skinny parts of the beach that have been caused by wind and swell lately. Good luck!

got to be in it to win it

got to be in it to win it buddy, and any where you can get a snelled fresh whiting or Tailor into the surf without being weeded over, your in with a good chance. I'm wishing you the best of luck! I noe how annoying it is, but once that line is peelin you forget all the years of waiting.

I went up the Saturday just

Tue, 2014-02-11 07:54

I went up the Saturday just gone. High winds and lots of weed. Barely had a rod in the water. Sand very soft in parts, ha to let tyres down to 12 psi. This was my first trip to the area and I was raging as there was a gutter running behind the breakers and I was sure there was a mulla with my name on it

Good spots for mulloway along

Wed, 2014-03-05 00:46

Good spots for mulloway along area north of alkimos wreck.
Pulled a nice 13-14kg mulloway out of a hole in the reef, about 50 to 60 mtrs off beach, a fair few years back.
Early morning fish, at high tide.
You will need to scout along tops of dunes, and look for holes in reef, with small channels entering and exiting, and have a good strong leader.
They will sit in sheltered deeper holes, waiting to ambush baitfish passing through, so look for holes about the size of a hills hoist, in diameter, that look deeper than surrounding areas.
Be patient on the strike, as they will play with their food for a while, just let em take some line first, and wait for a solid burst.
Once on, youll need to get it up and out of the hole, and coax it over the reef (towards beach) to continue the fight.
Was painful climbing back over high dunes, but now camping will be out of the question, and pretty sure parking areas give easier access, as the housing has built up.
