wind directions for fishing

I dont know if this has been discussed before but here we go.         What would be your best or favourite wind directions for fishing , wether it be land based or from a boat also different species. i have noticed many times that boat fishos tend to dislike westerlies and south westerlies. so maybe let us know the wind direction you dislike the most as well

No Wind = No Good. If there

No Wind = No Good. If there is no tidal movement and no wind, the fish are usually off the bite.

Plus you cant get a good

Plus you cant get a good drift happening with no wind/current, happened to me and Anytime Brad last Thursday. Our snapper Leads were basically anchoring us.

I personnally like a light W to SW wind, but with no swell.

ah, but.....

Mon, 2010-02-22 17:56

theres nothing like the feeling of stingin' it @ 35 knots over calm glass, pullin up to my favourite dhuie lumps, sending down a nicely presented whole squid, snelled on a couple of 6/0's with little to no sinker, pullin up a couple of big daddy dhus, maybe a baldy and/or a pinky, and stingin it home over an afternoon millpond.

yes you cover more ground with wind, but how nice is the ride without it?!

I'll have no wind over any wind, any day of the week thanks!

Very true scotto love that

Mon, 2010-02-22 18:52

Very true scotto love that feeling or jetting out to your spot on glass and getting a smooth ride home at the end of the day. Unfortunatly for me my bottom bashing spots throughout SW W.A have never served me well on glassy days. So i'll take a mildly windy day with no swell, over a glassy day or a very windy day anytime.

In saying that though have no problem getting bottom goodies on glassy days up north :)

Southerly and Souwester

Mon, 2010-02-22 07:49

Southerly tends to get a good drift along reef systems that run North - South and Souwesters run same as the swell so its a natural presentation of your bait. Larger predators sit and wait for the bait to come to them and that southwest corner of the lump seems to have the most action.

As soon as the seabreeze comes in thats when the Dhuies fire up.

A south wester is definatelygthe wind I look for for

Mon, 2010-02-22 08:35

landbased fishing. I have been told a north wester is not much good for offshore fishing and the few times I have been out in a boat and it has blown from that direction the fishing has been very quiet.

ssw winds for rock fish and pelagics from shore, or chassing mullas in the river. But easterlies whether it'd be north or south or straight for ballooning.

Light to moderate south wester fires the tailor up. But this coming weekend with bugger all wind and a full moon out is looking good for some mulla action on the beaches.

Old fart hates northerly winds

Mon, 2010-02-22 10:53

But his perfect wind is a nice easterly in the morning to go out on maybe 15klms them coming home with the southerly, which doesn't happen often in Leeman, lately its been roaring easterlies nearly all day, then the s/w'er comes in.

slight south wester

Mon, 2010-02-22 15:57

you then tend to find the bait appears in front of the ledges that face that way and ussually the start of the turn for the wind is ussually the best. find in an easterly the baits tend to jump from reef to reef but the s/w lets them run up to the ledges (if that makes sense)

East in the morning.  West

Mon, 2010-02-22 16:57

East in the morning.  West in the arvo.  Doesn't really matter which way the wind is blowing.  I still struggle to catch fish!

Tailor

Mon, 2010-02-22 20:09

When Tailor fishing- "When the winds from the East-the fish are least- when the winds from the west the fish are best"

Otherwise no wind at all is good for boat fishing- Hate the Nor-westers, generally means there is a cool change coming, and usually a resultant strong north tide running. tends to put the fish off the chew!

That's a popular one with the North Mole snapper anglers.

i tend to disagree

Mon, 2010-02-22 20:28

sorry nautiboy but i have found tho i still gte tailor on a seabreeze  i have found that the tailor are easier to get on an easterly and baitcasting mulies. but other fish i find as the wind changes to the west the fish are best yes.  and yes if no wind i tend to anchor on a good lump and burley up real well its amazing what comes along
