I'm in IT and windows 7 is a
I'm in IT and windows 7 is a welcomed replacement for Windows Vista (more like saving Microsoft's ass from a dud OS) but in reality windows XP will do what you need it to, just don't get Vista. I have it running on my home system and not had any issues, one of the main things they have put into it is compatibility for applications designed for old OS's as one of the main issues that Vista had was driver and application compatibility for old software/hardware. To my knowledge you cant actually get windows 7 right now on a new machine rather they give you an upgrade token for when it is officially released (22nd of oct) but that might have changed, not to say you cant download it elsewhere. I have a few mates running W7 on mini-laptops and apparently it runs really well even without all the power of a new desktop/laptop.
There are certain things that have changed, the most annoying thing for me is that they have tried to make everything friendlier so users cant fuck anything up, but this makes it harder to find where the fuck they are hiding the advanced settings but once you figure it out its alright. They seem to be gearing it towards people with widescreens and in future touchscreens.
So if your getting a new computer i would make sure that it does actually come installed with W7 if not, wait until it does or get them to put XP on it and use the upgrade token once its released.

For something that used to
For something that used to be simple, I had to do a lot of mucking about in vista. Big headache. In the research I came across a few comments that were saying in XP, all options are under perhaps 2-3 layers of menus. However, in vista it can be 7 or more, and not all those are intuitive. So you have to click search a lot more to find the options, and you'll probably miss the right ones if they arent where you think they should be.

No windows os is worth using
No windows os is worth using before SP2, some aren't after either (winme, vista).

thats is true (although
that is true (although waiting until SP2 for a home system is a little excessive) but when Microsoft don't give manufacturers (HP, Dell) a choice then you have to go with what OS is being supplied with the system. They tried to do with Vista but there was such a massive lash back from it they allowed an XP downgrade option for business users. You will find consumer systems from larger manufacturers will start to come out only with Windows 7 and you wont have much choice.

Its not actually released
Its not actually released til october 22, though Microsoft did do a beta program which people would have used. Theres also less microsoft sanctioned copies.
Not sure what choice you have except for getting XP. Practically all laptops will come with the new version of windows (vista atm, 7 soon) so if you want something else you'll have to install XP yourself. If you get a laptop now, you'll get a free upgrade to 7 when it comes out, but i'd just wait the month to get a laptop with it preinstalled so theres less mucking around (especially with drivers)

yep im also in the IT evnironment, have access to enterprise licensing from Microsoft, so i actually have a released version on Windows 7 running on my laptop.
Great OS, its been a while since ive been impressed with a Microsoft product. It's an addaptive operating system, which MS has not really used before.
Vista is going to be like windows mellenium, didnt really take off and will visel to nothing.

Question
I have a question of the "new" operating systems the; Am-er -icans have developed;
Have they figured out how to spell yet; ...............and taken the "i" out of tyre (T"i"re) and put the "u" back into colour, harbour, etc. I continually set my system to UK spelling and it keeps reverting to grade three (USA) spelling. Perhaps I just don't know how to "set" the settings...back to computers 1.01 for me.
Can we re issue them with "John Cleese's" letter to the Americans......;)

If you set it when you
If you set it when you install XP, there dont seem to be any problems. I think its part to do with word continually resetting though. The problem is you can set it at the bottom right, but its a bit of mucking about to get it to stay that way. There are a few guides how to do it properly so it'll run properly every time. Example here.

Hi Ya, Used to be IT, ran
Hi Ya,
Used to be IT, ran help desks for 13 years, but gave it up a number of yeas ago. Now I find I have to ask how to do things I know I use to teach people how to do.
With the spelling thing, I had a similar problem at work (Win XP) especially after loading Office 2007 and our IT help desk couldn't fix it either (but that isn't saying much). Anyway, I found there were three different places to set the language. Once they were all set, no problems since.
Now you are going to ask where they were. I don't know, I was just lucky to find them. But from memory, Control Panel, Word and .... hmmm can't remember Ahh, yes, just looked at my Office 2007 load here and remember that with Office 2007 there is an Office Tools 'folder' which contains a language setting. If you don't do all three then you have problems. (Then again, maybe if you do the Office Tools Language Setting first you might not have to do the Word Tools Language setting at all).
Cheers.

We are over run with IT people here
No wonder there are so many boat owners (Lol).
On a more serious note, it is fanastic having so many knowledgeable IT people on board who are always willing to share their knowledge with computer nuckleheads like me.

i will put a pre warning out.... dont expect an 'upgrade' from vista to Windows 7 to be as simple and a friendly as it sounds.
a Re-install would be a much better option.
Yeah colin im supprised on the number of IT people on here aswell....thought i was the only one!!!
