no loss of respect on my behalf. In my experience Daiwa spinning reels are the best, i have moved away from other brands due to a number of failures and bullsh#t warranties. just goes to show that buying a Catalina which is a fair bit cheaper than a saltiga you are still getting most of the premium parts/quality plus its a little bit lighter
according to the review yep your not getting a great deal more for for the $300-450 your paying (remember saltiga isnt fixed price anymore) so the moral of the story (and the review) is if you cant afford a high speed saltiga go the catalina to save some bucks. I think we can all agree if your after the best value for money reel then saltiga wont be it. If you want a reel to fish hard regularly against tough fish the saltiga is worth every bit of what you pay.
It doesnt really matter what your buying cars, boats the best things usually have a primo price tag, if ya dont like it dont buy it
I have a catalina 4500H which has been used hard for 4 years of bottom bashing trout, reds, big cod and sharks.
It is very tough and I basically have the drag locked with 50 pound braid and it can handle some real abuse.
The only issue was the handle knob, which as stated did not have a bearing. I bought a jigging power knob, with bearings for $60 and it now seems indestructible.
Actually guys if you go to his list section and take pricing into account I reckon a Penn Torque is a better option. If you wanted to spend a little more money then a Stella. The main thing this review tells me is that the Catalina is a brilliant reel and will work great plus the new Saltiga is way overpriced, to the point that the Catalina is also a little overpriced itself.
I won't be buying one, in fact I can't wait to see the current model Stella's start dropping in price as they clear them out for the 2013 model.
At least there is some food for thought here- its good to see at least Daiwa have looked at his review notes and used it to their advantage by updating some of the issues with the 2010 Saltiga.
Still think the Daiwa gear is the best- personal preferance and has never let me down to think otherwise...

Yeah read it this morning.
Yeah read it this morning. Looks like a sweet reel. At that price there's not too much difference with a stella though.
Next big review will be the 2013 stella I reckon!

I have always gone the reel just below the premium class
Might have to try this one after the review. Looks and sounds like you get close to premium at nothing like the price.
