Yamaha or Honda
Submitted by adamsmith84 on Tue, 2010-01-19 18:31
currently looking for a repower for a 5.9m cuddy cab and yam and honda (4 str) looks like the way to go, I've read all about them but looking for a opinion of someone who's owned a yam or honda between 50-150hp and recommend which one is better and why? also how are the etec, would loe to own one but still unsure of reliability, are optimaxes reliable
also just to put it out there, whats the thought on mercury engine, i've got one now and think they could be designed better

both great. i'd have both in a heart beat
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

I would also say the yamaha.
I would also say the yamaha. Not sure about today's figures but one reason when i was selling outboards was the turning angle. Yamaha's would hit 45 degrees each way as opposed to the Hondas 40 degrees. so better turnng circle.
Honestly both are very good. I would use local dealers and who you like to deal with more as a good idea to help make your decision.
Honda have a new system that if you have a honda and have it serviced at a Honda dealer it is recorded on the Honda website when you buy a second hand unit you can log onto, type in serial number and it will give you the service history of that motor. Great system that i like but if you don't have it serviced by Honda dealer than it could also look bad a to a perspective buyer.
just dhu it

SIMILAR
i think you will find there will be no complete answer which is better. get a price from both agents and look at warranty period and where the service agents are located suited to your self, i have had four yammys , no hondas ( two mercs and four evinrudes) presently 150 yammy 4st , my advice would be to look at the places you travel to IE up north exy and carnarvon what service agents are on hand to repair them if i get into trouble and then it only gets down to cost as majority of common name motors are reliable

Moto cross magazines do shootouts and compare bikes against each other Its a shame the boating industry do not do this for us the buyer..

Go for the Honda
They are both good OB's but Honda give far better after sales service. I run Suzuki 4's and they are great so are the etechs

I've had Yamaha 150 on two
I've had Yamaha 150 on two different occasions. Great motor! My uncle just bought Honda 150s, very quite but. Heavy! I just bought etec 150s, amazing torque! Power deliver is totally different! All I can say is most motors today are all good and all have their falls! I would recommend you buy which ever engine that has a good qualified workshop near you! As most motors have a 5 year warranty so just pick brand x for after sales service! Or and second would be does weight have any issue on your boat?

i have just repowered my
i have just repowered my sf655 and went through this same exercise, for me the honda was out because of the weight, it came down to yammy, merc, etec.
i ended up going with the etec because of wieght and alot to do with the price, also all the reports a have heard and read the etec always seem to have the advantage(in my eyes) over the four stroke guys.
as dr drift says....is there going to be a wieght issuse, i could not afford anymore weight done the back.
i still would have gone with the yammy but they could not match the price that i got on the etec.... 2009 200hp $16400 including the concealed control box, polised s/s prop, i command gauges, 5 year warranty.
mine was an insurance claim so it included fitting as well.
go the yammy or the etec!

I've been really happy with
I've been really happy with my 60hp Yammy but it's not gonna be any good for your boat. If I had the choice for a larger boat it would be between the Suzi and a Etec. I've ridden in a few etec powered boats and have been impressed, but if weight wasn't an issue I'd put the 4st Suzi on.
Off the subject a little, an easy way to compare engines is:
www.boatpoint.com.au
go to "news and reviews" then tick "engine reviews". This often gives good engine reviews inclduing prices, and also does comparison articles between manufacturers.

know about suzuki they look good but my friend has twin 175's on and 8m leisure cat and he says that one keeps stalling for no reason, we had a 60 merc 4str and its failed on us so many times so were gonna stick to yam and honda
