Yamaha parts from America

I feel bad because I know I should be supporting local buisness but the prices here in Australia and in particular Perth is rediculous!! I recently purchased parts from America to service my engine and for around same price I was going to be charged for an oil filter, fuel filter, spark plugs and a water pump kit ($330 was the cheapest)  here in Perth I ended up getting 3 x oil filters, 3 x fuel filters, NGK spark plugs, water pump kit, external annodes and 2 thermostats for $398 delivered to my front door..... All of these are genuine Yamaha parts from a Yamaha dealer in the U.S by the way....... Its a damn shame I cant find some where that can send me Yamalube from over there becuase it is about a quarter of the price!!......  Its just rediculous how our government charges so much in tax which in turn hurts local buisness because the consumer purchases from where it is cheaper!

Now all i have to do is find an American dealer who can sell me cheap trailer parts to service the trailer hahaha

Has anyone else done the same as Im doing? Do you feel bad for not supporting local?

Cheers fishos!!

It's all relative.

Tue, 2015-08-04 06:21

for every one boat we have on the water here they have 100 on the water in the states so parts are going to be cheaper for sure. In saying that I was pleasantly surprised last time I had my outboard serviced for the 20hr in Wangara. Didn't have the time to do it myself with kids or work. I used to do all my own servicing but just don't have the spare time at mo

When the AUD was higher the savings were massive but even now you can still save 40% off Aussie supplier prices. Express shipping from boats.net can have parts here in 3 days if urgent.

Its a shame, always prefer to keep the $$ local but the savings are too big to ignore.

Soon you will have to add 10% GST to your online purchases from overseas. Might be a good time to start a relationship with your local supplier.

This is where the Australian

Tue, 2015-08-04 10:13

This is where the Australian retailers and dealers have to start realising that the public will stop buying from them unless they address the huge mark ups on parts.

Yammy parts are produced in Japan. The US and Australia can or should be paying the same price Ex factory. So somewhere between the factory and the consumer there are huge percentages added.

Even if they do lower the GST threshold, the parts are still way cheaper getting them from the US.

Personally I'd prefer to walk

Tue, 2015-08-04 12:34

Personally I'd prefer to walk into my local dealer and be greated with a friendly smile and helpful assistant and buy with confidence at competitive prices. But as pointed out, the price diffs between US online and local is sometimes too much to swallow. But having experience with businesses in USA I understand that they have the benefit of volume sales and MUCH lower employment costs. Together this is a considerable saving and it is passed on to the customer.

We all want to earn massive wages but we shit ourselves when we have to pay more for something when compared to an economy fuelled by 350 MILLION people as opposed to 20 odd million. In Oz we get great (mostly free) health services, social benefits and grants, good wages (compared to USA) and even better work entitlements. Someone's gotta pay it can't be a win/win as some one will lose. Right now we're on a path pf self destruction because soon the dealers will shut their doors and more jobs will be lost. Maybe Woolies or Coles can open a spare parts division as those seem to be the only business models that works here!

Buy online but give local shops a go

Tue, 2015-08-04 21:49

wages, GST, insurance, rent,+ overheads = higher prices. No volume of market here- the writing is on the wall for all Aussie retail if we all go overseas.

What goes around comes around. If everyone buys overseas there ain't no more boat shops..or tackle...or dive

Everyone screams when they talk about bringing in cheap Chinese labor yet it's ok to buy from an overseas company and not pay GST where the local business has to.

It suck for the retailers

Wed, 2015-08-05 15:21

I too buy a lot from the US as prices are too dear here in Australia
I used to work in the spare parts industry a few years back and what shits me is the importer with the contract to bring the stuff into Australia pretty much sets the price now I'm not sure how much they pay but I think they would be at least putting 50% mark up on the product now the poor retailer has to buy from the specified importer as they rights to sell the product in Australia and try to re-sell the item to make a bit of profit to survive.
we all blame a lot of the small businesses in Australia but its not always the retailer but the importer
Aussie retailers cant just buy parts from USA direct and resell the as they are not allowed to so our Aussie retailers get fingered

As for we sell 1 motor to 100 USA motors maybe it might have something to do with the price maybe if they were cheaper we might sell some more units in Australia (I think that is a bull**it excuse to finger us again)

I payed $35000 for f300 Yamaha when the Aussie dollar was strong and my friend bought a Suzuki from the US landed at his door for $22000 AUD so why wouldn't you what does the importer make $13000 to ship the item and invoice it

Sorry site sponsors I do price locally and if there is not much difference I will pay the bit extra to support local business but if it is a stupid amount I will wait and order online from overseas

With the world of the internet and mobile phones the rest of the world needs to realise they cant rip people off any more we can price check on the fly now
we can buy online so the days of making huge profits of us are coming to a end and they need to catch up before all our retailers suffer

It's nothing to do with

Wed, 2015-08-05 16:04

It's nothing to do with volume or overheads, cost etc.  As above wholesalers set the price coming in and they set it higher when it has AU on it, why because they cane and always have done.

It's done on everything even iTunes (and tell me where there is any extra cost there).  You can buy the same item online - if its an AU 'store' its more if you go through 'US' store (which some sites won't allow) you'll get the same item cheaper

It's a catch 22 situation and

Wed, 2015-08-05 21:52

It's a catch 22 situation and it ONLY appreas when comparing prices to USA, the worlds largest economy! Aus importers, dealers etc do not have the benefit of mass volume. Let's take a dealer selling service kits for a Yamaha. Even if he buys for the same price as the US dealer he only sells half a dozen kits a week compared to many dozens by a US dealer. Same amount of staff, premises/retail outlet etc but much greater volume sales. If he makes $10 on each service kit and sells 50 kits a week he's making $500 as opposed to the Aussie dealer making $60 (6x10). Then the Aussie dealer is paying his staff more (because we have min wages, skills shortage and low unemployment) then add on payroll tax, 9.5% super and very favourable employment entitlements like min of 20 days paid leave (plus sickies) and of course long service leave. This all costs Australian businesses money which they need to make out of selling prouducts, the same products as the USA dealer.

The median house price in WA is over $500K and everyone wants to drive a 4x4 and earn a 6 figure salary. When the mining industry wanted to bring in cheap labour we had unions crying but those same people who demand high salaries, superannuation and favourable employment conditions and benefits have the choice to spend their dollars wherever they get the best deal. Maybe Aussie employers should have the opportunity to also spend their money overseas and be allowed to employ cheap labour. I'm sure there's many employers, especially miners who could do with a few $5/hr FIFO electricians, tilers, plumbers and general labourers who would be only too happy to do 6 month hitches. But I suppose that's not fair for the locals!

Its called the Australia Tax

Thu, 2015-08-06 08:29

Cast your minds back to a couple of years ago (or less) and the Senate enquiry that was looking at this whole thing. The convoluted arguments by the representatives for Apple and Microsoft, amongst others, for charging twice as much for a product into Australia vs the US just didn't stack up. We are just seen as an easy market to mark up to buggery into, as we are conditioned to take it. Have been for a long time.Yes, if it is a shopfront retailer here, their costs are higher than, say, the US, but the cost they pay for genuine from the supplier is marked right up to start with. They ( the big corporations)love selling shit to us, only a " small" market, but very profitable. How is it " more expensive" to supply a computer OS by friggin' DOWNLOAD to an Australian customer, than an American one?

If we don't use our local retailers and service providers, they won't be there when we really need them. Simple as that. But I buy stuff off the net myself--just very little from overseas, prefer local suppliers. it's really just a continuation of the argument of buying from your local small town shop (when you live in a little place a long way from a capital city, like I do) with a higher price, or waiting until you go to town/mail order it . Just have to keep a balance about it, I reckon, you need that  local bloke to be there for you, in the end.

Ranmar850, you're correct

Sat, 2015-08-08 21:24

Ranmar850, you're correct there needs to be a balance. I also buy the odd retail item online but mostly for the sake of convenience. If I buy a high value item I will bargain with a local retailer and in almost all cases I get a reasonable discount. I buy with peace of mind that should I have a problem I will have Australian consumer protectcion. I can take it back and get sorted at no extra cost to me. I hang on to every receipt!
