Yellowfin Tuna

Just wondering if this is the time of year for YFT? Haven't really targeted them before but me and a mate just went chasin' some birds. Wheeling and diving it was pretty obvious (we saw a few tuna launch). I'm a big tuna virgin so I'm puttin it at around 18-20kg (I'm 6'3 and 95). Any other estimates?? Suggestions for more?? Lure types/set-ups?

Best results would be to troll a deep diver or two such as a Rap X-rap and a surface lure (angle faced popper or skirt).  Don't troll through the school or bird activity but rather around and to the side of it. either that of pull up about casting distance away and cast a popper/slider or metal spinning lure into the edge of the action and wind as fast as you can.

If trolling and you hook up keep motoring for 50 metres or so and you often find one of the other rods will go off as well.  If no other hook ups it can also pay to thrown a lure around while fighting one fish as others will be in the area/following the hooked tuna.

I reckon your fish is around 15kg and looking tasty

Cheers

cheers boys, it fought like a champ. first run was 100+ metres and the second was about the same. had the rod in my hands when it hit too so that was a fun surprise :) just had the best tuna burger of my life. it was caught out from the fuel boys in around 120m trolling an orange/pink/yellow with a metal bib. any other tuna recipes??
