They're solid pulling fish Jay, definately worth a jig. They are common more times of the year than sambos which is good. Gotta say those GT's you guys have been getting are definately on my list (hopefully will get some at the end of the month in exmouth)
I'd pick the amber over a sambo in a head to head fight. Unfortunately this one was caught on heavy jigging gear so just a lot of work winching up 200m and not a lot of fight (pulled a few clicks of drag set more than double its weight). Need some lighter gear when the 5kg ones are around (just gotta get the rod).
The skippers mate got spooled running 50lb braid (the really expensive stuff) running a saltiga S-extreme, so that was a biiiiiig fish. Considering it was showing no signs of stopping after 100m+ of running with quite a bit of drag, it must of been some 20-30kg of solid amberjack (now, why couldnt i have got that on my heavier gear :p)
The one I picked up in Exmouth was only about 70cm to fork but it still took a little line on my saltist with the drag set very hard and spooled with 50lb gear.
If they're splotchy then they're a sambo. Sambos dont always have them though, so if theres no splotches it could be either. Amberjacks tend to have a more pronounced yellow stripe, but the easiest way is to look at the head profile and the eye. Amberjacks have a yellow eye (sambos brown) and amberjacks have a more streamlined head, while sambos have more of a lump head. Basically if you drew a large circle, would the head fit it pretty well, or would there be a lump.
Greta catch for sure mate. As for the skipper's mate getting spooled, that's fishing for you isn't it - can be ironic at times. You might have had heavyish gear, but 200m of winching is still a lot of work.

i got a nub question for you
i got a nub question for you lot... and i bet its been thrown out here a few times...
other week, me and a couple of my mates were out in 40m from two rocks..
got 2 fish out there.. both smallish, talking 60cm and 80cm collective...
Couldnt tell the difference between the two.. they were both sambos... or maybe an amberjack and a sambo?
the larger one had a brownish backbone and the smaller one was pretty much all matte silver/grey to white.
difference? if any?
