Exmouth fishing in the seventies (1976)

Exmouth fishing in the seventies (1976)

I was stationed in Exmouth from 1975-1977 and fell in love with fishing there. I spent many a night out on the Naval Pier. One night I pulled in a 7ft Thresher Shark. I used a hand spool with 100lb monofillament line. It split my fingers on more than one occasion. The sport was, you pull that fish out or it pulls you in. On this particular trip, my friend Don , a captain of one of the prawning boats, took me out for 3 days and nights fishing. At night we worked the nets, and during the days slept (except for me). He would anchor off a reef and I would fish while everyone else slept. I used fresh Tiger Prawns for bait. I caught a yellow fin Tuna, northwest snapper, bluebone (my favorite), queenfish, and many others. We filleted a lot of fish, gave some away and had enough left to use every recipe we could come up with. That trip was truly the trip of a lifetime for me and I've fished some other really fun places since.

I have heard that big schools of big hungry fish schooled under that jetty at night.
Thanks for sharing an interesting yarn and some historic pictures.
