Killing fish
Hey guys don't assume anything and don't even start getting into this discussion , both fish died before they got to the boat and were kept in excellent condition , the fish were cut up and distributed to the many onlookers at the weigh in . Nothing wrong with that is there , over 300 fish tagged and released , you should attend a game comp over east and see how many fish get hung . EGFC is setting the bar!!!!
Just one more cast , honest !!!

good to hear nothing was
good to hear nothing was wasted. i have heard they tend to hang heaps over east and then just dump a lot of them afterwards. i would rather see them eaten if they dont survive

Taste?
They would taste not dissimilar to swordfish ? never had the pleasure.

better than swordfish if
better than swordfish if they smaller fish, but the 500lb plus ones tend to be bland.
Use to get Marlin steaks in south africa from Mozambique in the fishmonger.
Best grilled in tin foil on the BBQ to keep them moist, then opened and seared just before served.

Has Mark Hawker got a few?
Has Mark Hawker got a few? No idea what his team or boat is called, last time I noticed, it was called boat number five, because it was his 5th boat.

would feel more guilty
watching someone kick a blowfish around a jetty than take a marlin.I would rather let them go but if you are after a feed of fish you can do a lot worse than marlin. What gives me the s@3ts is when people jump on a 2 or 3 year old marlin getting weighed then turn around and lump praise on a pic of a 14 to 20plus year old dhu or bauldy pic.How many people hate to see a billfish weighed then turn around and put a hook in a live spanish flag that is one of the slowest growing fish around in order to catch a crappy arse mackie.Good to see a lot of billies about have you got into them yet Sam?Sorry i ran out of time to take you for a fish but had to get back for work.
So tell me have you got your info from years on the water or hours on the internet?

We wound up
with 10 fish , every man on board tagged a fish , a fat time was had by all . I think the tally was around 440 fish , absolutley wild time , Mahi Mahi won with 28 Billy's , fish everywhere. Go west of the lighthouse 60 to 100 mtrs , water at the moment is at 29.0 and that indigo blue colour .

cant complain
I would think it out of place then to complain about the pros long lining when comps like this still go on and kill the same fish.

for the uneducated
Here is some more info on research for those that have a care about the future fishery.A couple of us have been putting tags in out in the 40s down to the 30s of mindarie. One fish has been recaptured and released 5 times by the guy that tagged it and twice by another of the boats that fish the same grounds. It has moved from the 40s into the 30ish marks and then back out again. So to all that think the release weight doesnt work how much evidence do you need. One guy went out today and recaptured 4 fish today alone.Back on the Gamex front a few years back a crew from perth dumped a hand full of golden trevs at the tip and all but got run out of town after getting a dressing down from fisheries.Hell it was only last year that adam was doing research on the mackies at the weigh in.If all comps were ran with the same integrity as the Exmouth comps we would be far better off.If you dont like what i have to say too bad as unlike a lot of others i have the facts to back it up.

Well said allrounder ,
out of all the billfish hooked only 3 fish made it to the scales and only cause they couldn't be revived , as I said all were eaten , nothing wasted , the 3rd fish was Joe Deckers black which went 93.5 on 15kg , WA record .
Photos to follow once I get unpacked and photos downloaded off the camera .
Cheers

there where a fair few
there where a fair few people fishing the comp that didnt know the diff between I.D ing the blue and black marlin as for many of the fishers this was there first go at it .if youve caght blacks and blues before its not a prob .but when you see a lit up blak marlin he is all blue and purple hense a fair few fish were called for blues .it was very educational to see both spieces side by side with Gatesy and crew going through the differences in the fish .i myself was there waiting to record a tag .the blue came down and i went to get fillets .with in 15 minutes the whole fish was stripped bare .not a scrap left hence i didnt get any .i went to the bar to grab a coldy and by the time i got back say 10 to 15 minutes had passed and the 106 kg was the same.i then bolted for some yellow fin which i managed to get about 1.5 kgs of and it was gone in seconds.
bloody top week and would recomend it to any one with a boat who wants to have a crack at a bill as everyone there at the comp are eager to help anyone pop there cherry on a beaky
