Great fish
How tall are you?
I reckon mack is between 60-70lb, got a very solid girth which bulks up the weight for the length of it.
Well done Jay, did well not to get bitten off through the kevlar.

My guess was 35+, it feels heavier than any GT I've had to hold up and my PB GT is 36-38kg.
Yeah John, very lucky to not get bitten off and you should have seen it pull, they fight so much better on braid.

Real nice Jay, how often do you come accross spaniards when jigging out there mate?

Not often but they're
Not often but they're usually monster class. This is the first one I've managed to land though. I've hooked other fish that have fought exactly the same and I suspect they're BIG spaniards too. Most of the time they bite through the assist or leader before we get to see them, some of them have fought harder than this fish so I suspect 40kg+.

33/34
33/34 I reckon, maybe a bit more as photos are deceptive. I've seen a lot of mackies and thats a pretty decent sized one, definately a POTM contender (winner).
This is the Exxy 45kg one.

Wow. Awesome capture there
Wow. Awesome capture there Jay, especially getting it on a jig (and one that wasnt set up for the toothies). Seen Zylon material in the shops that is supposed to stand up on the assist, but then they can just take the whole jig...
Do you ever target spaniards for jigging (when you know they're around)?

Yeah I've targeted them
Yeah I've targeted them before when they're schooling in the 8-12kg size range but you end up with alot of jig casualties and it ends up being a very expensive day...
Bigger fish are usually solitary and are harder to target.

I've tried 49 strand and
I've tried a short length 49 strand and single strand, but they seemed to shy away (wasnt a huge number around, just sporadic, so havent had many cracks at them) and tried a trailing single and cranked the lure flatout, but didnt get one (had a few bitemarks halfway down just below the jig though). Just wondering if there are good ways to land them without donating too much gear. Will be a target up in exi next year.

Yep your strike rate
Yep your strike rate definately diminishes once you change to wire. I've been trying to figure out a consistent way of landing them without losing too much gear for a while now, got some Owner PowerFlex assist cord which has wire insert but I haven't had a chance to trial it yet.

We had a ball on Sunday
Nice couple of rankin, 2 trout, should have been 3 but Idiot here decided to lift it and bye bye nice troat. A cod that I think was a malabar cod rather than Estuary, some very plump Flags and a couple of blue lies. Kept 2 trout, the malabar, and 3 stripeys for a lovely meal.
Rest is there for you to catch.

Great Fish!Does 30kg of
Great Fish!Does 30kg of justice in my eyes! I was having a similar problem with hooking spaniards a few weeks ago while shore jigging at steep pt, I hooked some really solid fish but they both chewed through kevlar assists, so I changed to wire assists and could only managed AJ's and small tuna... Loving your captures! JD

Jay, mackie in comparison
Here's one from my last Exi trip.
completely smashed my 25kg scales so estimate 35kg.
I'm 6'4" so it gives you a size of the mackie
yours is one solid fish

Big Spannie
Great Fish Jay. I've never caught one above 25kg but would love to give jigging for them a try one day with my new outfit I purchased a few months ago. Just as a sidenote the biggest Spaniard I've ever seen was caught in 1991-1992 at Cape Cuvier by a pro boat working that area called "Dusty" it weighed in at 59kg or at around 130lb and needed two guys to lift it into the air. It had the most predatory head I'd ever seen with it's eyes sunken. I had a photo floating around for years at home but lost it during moving house.....just imagine catching this guy on a jig!!!!!
