It is not an easy field to get into. My magazines deal with a number of local photographers and they all say that it is a tough business to get a start in. One way that you can accelerate your opportunites is to have access to take photographs of mining or oil and gas related activities. Most magazines (and there is a lrage number of them in Perth) in the resource sector are looking for new pics - as long as they are good. You probably wouldn't get paid for them at first - but you would have your name published in an area where a lot of photographic companies are looking for work. That can help build a portfolio - which is critical for getting a start in photography. Fishing mags are also a good place to build on your portfolio.
I would also suggest entering photographic competitions. Most Shire Councils have them every year.
All the best, Colin Hay
as i said before !!!! there is mo photoshop or trick photography used. just right place at right time. anyway some of us would be fast asleep at that time. including me.
The lighting in those shots are totally different Keeny, but I will take your word on it.
Tailor Mark get yourself a blog happening and get your name around, Perth is a pretty small place afterall.
Do you troll Photography sites to get ideas.
Here is a mates site, he is also trying to get more into photography but more on the nature/ animal side of things.
cheers neander, it must have been an overcast night or stormy night. i dont know why you would take a pic like that anyway and then photoshop it and send it round.
When I say photshop it Keeny, It is because a lot of normal shots are edited just to bring out light that is already there.
It is done to highlight areas, not to change the apperance of a photo, but to highlight area to make them stand out.
That link that I posted above.
You can gaurantee that Gary has adjusted the image in some way on every photo.
The sunset that is in there he has heavily touched up because that is the result he wanted.
I have given him a photo that was taken on an overcast day.
It was of my mate getting bogged on the edge of a dam, a lot of the car was darker and undefined.
Within 10 mins he produced a nice clear shot. He hadnt changed the positioning or added anything else to the photo, just a little bit of subtle lighting to the body of the car so you could defferentiate between the car and the mud and general makeing the whole image lighter.
HEHEHE man he was really bogged. He was turning around so he could snatch me out and he went down all 4 wheels in a bog hole.
I am managing editor for a Perth publishing house that produces magazines about the oil and gas and mining industries and magazines on Papua New Guinea and New Caledonia.
