SA Marron

SA Marron

After seeing a few marron photos here it reminded me of some we caught in SA. It's funny there, marron are an introduced "pest" and there are no licenses, bag or size limits and it's illegal to release them, regardless of size. Here's some we caught one day a few years ago sitting on oven trays for size comparison.

Tasty!

The sure look tasty. I'm pretty sure that we have a slightly different species. I think there are two main ones in WA - the hairy marron and the common one.

Do they taste the same? If so I wonder why they sell wa marron in the fishmarkets - surely it would be more profitable to get them from SA?

I don't think it would be big enough to support a commercial fishery.
Also I'm not sure of the scientific name, they were always just marron to us, and they all taste beautiful.

I doubt you can farm them if they're declared and anything at the fish markets here will be farmed.

I would be stoked to be able to fish for marron all year round. They are so bloody good with some salt pepper and fresh bread.

Were they pretty common in SA?
