Once again I'm opening myself up to ridicule, but on a trip to New Cal last year I had a terrible run on singles. I lost numerous fish, so I went back to trebles. I am not saying they are any better or not but that is just my preference. If using big lures maybe look at Owner Jobus as a rear hook as I was a cheapskate and only rigged with SJ51's, that might have made all the difference. I know from other forums that singles work very well, but it's trebles all the way for me!!
I've found it harder to keep a fish connected on the singles as well Steve, but have only tried using smaller lures in the metro area. Maybe I should stick with the trebles
I'm about to make some more lures and figure there's no reason why I can't get a mackie or a marlin for that matter, on a big beaded lure in Exxy ;)
I only use singles on Halco slices for salmon(opposing back to back) and I also use single hook rigs on skirts for tuna etc. and think the capture rate has probably been better, but for some weird reason it let me down on big poppers. No doubt Jody, you will hook and land some good fish using singles, and if hooked well I would say it would be harder for fish to "throw" it.
I find you must put a swivel connected to the hook too, since most of the fish is lost when the pressure is put on the fish when it rolls or changes direction frequently.
Most people just rig singles direct, no swivel. In fact if you use something with an inline eye, like the Decoy Sergeant, you can use only one split ring.
I rigged mine with the tail hook point facing down. Dunno how that'd affect hookup rate ,if at all , but it's how they rig em trolling for bluefin off portland.
If you rig them with the hook pointing up you generally get less weed caught on the hooks - kinda only works for the tail though. Less weed, more time with lures in the water .... more fish!? Have dropped the belly hooks and haven't really noticed too much difference in the number of hookups.

Have heard they are doing this now with poppers and minnows off QLD for GT'S and Macks
Would like to hear what the hookup rate is like.

It is unfortunately to lose
It is unfortunately to lose a few fish, but at least there is something to let go if you use singles.
I actually found on small stuff its harder to get that initial hookup, but they tend to get thrown less too.

You will drop a few, but
You will drop a few, but when you get a hard trashing fish on oboard, the singles are much safer.

Singles for me
I thought that one of the main reasons to use single hooks is to help the fish to be released after catching it.so its not so cut up and bleeding

If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

My 2 cents worth for what 2 cents is worth!
Man with line in water catches fish!
