Starting to kit up for the Montes
Submitted by Ben Derecki on Sun, 2010-08-01 00:11
My boy's little fingers trying to get at all the goodies I'm starting to hoard for my trip to the Monties next month.
It's a wicked feeling when you start laying everything out and thinking through if you've got everything covered. Need a few more packets of plastics yet then will have a look at jigs and poppers.
Then rods and reels!

Just think, all those nice
Just think, all those nice plastics will be a big mangled pile of carnage after your trip! thats if any of them make it back to the boat! Those paddle tails will get nailed everytime!

When you going? the 5 and 7"
When you going?
the 5 and 7" slam and gulps tended to work a lot better than the pre rigged style paddle tails. Saying that it also probably because i gave them a lot more time.
the weezel mink should be the first popper you rig up, a good all rounder which has accounted for a lot of pilbara GT's that is for sure, make sure you work them really hard. It can be tiring but worth the effort, BIG Splashes!

Goodz - I'm already picturing the mound of half-eaten plastic bodies around my feet... like some B-grade soft plastics zombie apocalypse flick.
Brad, we're off at the end of August mate. Fly up to Exxy on the 27th and steam out sometime that night. Thx for the heads-up on the Gulps and Weezels. On the poppers, how do you connect them to your leader? You use a knot or crimp, or other?
botti / Dr - cheers lads. Last time we were up at Coral Bay we tried leadheads as sinkers and what a performance they put in. Big spangleds and reds loved them. The largest ones I can find though are the Tsunamis at BW and they only go to 120g which isn't ideal for deeper water but definately good for shallower. Only $6ea too which is pretty cheap. Unless you've seen them cheaper?

depends on your leader
depends on your leader mate
first you connect to the split ring/swivel connection, but there are a couple of ways to connect your swivel to the
leader
two of the more common methods, if I am using a twisty then i crimp. People will tell you that this isnt strong enough, BUT i have never had one come undone and i have never seen one come undone if done correctly
if your using a pr knot you can either tie or crimp a swivel to the end of your single strand leader.
google if your not sure, a lot of examples out there these are two of the most common i guess

if your using twisted leader
if your using twisted leader you can thread a swivel onto the leader then twist the leader back onto itself, and secure it with 3-4 knail knots. also acts as a bite leader, so if you twisted 120pnd to 240 then you got a bite leader of 480pnd.

You will need more plastics
You will need more plastics mate, haha, that lot might see you through two days max. I wish it was me.
