Federal budget spin

Press release from the Federal Fisheries Minister

Rudd Government invests in recreational fishing industry
The Rudd Labor Government will invest $2.0 million over three years to help secure a sustainable recreational fishing industry for the future.

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Tony Burke said the Government would deliver on its election commitment to fund a new Recreational Fishing Industry Development Strategy.

“The recreational fishing industry is an important drawcard for regional Australia, underpinning tourism and boosting regional economies,” Mr Burke said.

“More than five million Australians go fishing each year; they book local accommodation, purchase goods and services and participate in other tourism activities.

“This new strategy will contribute to the long-term sustainable management of Australia’s fisheries resources and ensure regional economies continue to benefit from the industry.

“I will establish a national advisory committee for the recreational fishing sector, including a voice for the fishing tackle and tourism sectors, to advise the Government on a review of the 1994 National Recreational Fishing Policy and the development of a new Recreational Fishing Industry Development Strategy.

“The committee will also make recommendations on the funding of specific initiatives to encourage the promotion of sustainable fishing, education and awareness and best-practice environmental standards for recreational fishing.

“It is part of the Government’s overall plan for sustainable fisheries into the future.”

Don't know how they came up with $2m but divide it by 7 states/territories and then by 3 years and you get about $95k each state per year.
I think Colin H is right though it won't actually get spent out here at the coalface but rather on forming comittees etc.

Probably spend it all

on forming committees to decide what sort of committees should be formed.

At least it is something.

At least it is something.  These committees will hopefully come up with some good answers that benefit the whole fishing community and not just the interest groups that those committee members represent.

The other issue is that they should be acting now, not in 5 years time after 5 committees, studies, consultation and recommendations....

$95k

that's 1 staff member and nothing else not even rent for a office

Being government it probably won't even get that.

Bloody hell just moving office in the government costs about that much just in red tape.

Lets face it the government aren't going to help us, all they will do is close it down

We are better off finding our own solution to this issue and letting them know.
