Sounder Choice

New boat is very close to being ordered, Stabicraft 609sc and i am tossing up which electronics to put on it. Currently am leaning towards Furuno 585 matched to a lowrance 7"gps but have also heard some good things about the new lowrance sounders with Broadband and the price would be the same but I kinda like the idea of having the two units being able to communicate with each other. I have a 620 on the current boat and love it, so certainly no one needs to sell the furuno to me, just wondering if anyone has had a play with the new Lowrance gear??

Agree with the Furuno 585, with a standard transom mount or yeh spending the extra and getting the 1KW as mentioned!
I've got a few mates with Lowrance sounders and i've had a look at the broadband and for me.....i'm not sold!
I do however like their Lowrance "Plotters" and Navionics cards. Nothing wroing with a cross breed mix on the dash!

Hey guys, quick question - when looking for ground do you set it on 50khz or 200 or split?

In waters up to 120m i use 200KHZ and bottom lock, any deeper and its 50KHZ and bottom lock.......i also recommend using the A-scope (3 screens with A-scope being a smaller screen)

Thanks for that Ryan - spent all day on the FFB last sunday for 2 just size Blackarse! Still getting the hang of everything but dying to get into some snapper or dhuie. Do you look more for lumps or the fish?

I'm not sure of the point of upgrading would be.The ff50 is a top unit!

FFB!
Matt, with the FFB i like to fish the western side on the drop off area. Depths of 25-28m has some nice lumps along there and anchoring is the go. I'd suggest driving north/south slowly and locate these lumps. Trying a few lumps will make a slow day better and if the fishing isn't good at say your first spot after an hour of burley then move on.
Sometimes i've moved to 2 or 3 spots and that has worked well. Having fish showing up on the lumps is good and the burley will attract plenty of fish/mix with heaps of skippy showing up atm....some big buggers also which are fun on light gear & SP!
As for dhufish & snapper, the deeper water lumps in the 38-45m mark straight out from Garden Island is worth it but you need to find them. (if you dont have spots already)
The next step out to the 55-75m mark is a chance for both also, if the ground looks a bit up and down then it's worth a drift, dont worry too much about the really big structure stuff!
