Myth Buster

I've read a few times where people are saying the Gillies Okta Killer jigs have very light guage hooks, well it's simply not true!

The Gillies have the best hooks out of all this style of jigs, the pic here abouts is of a 100 gram Okta Killer & a 90 gramRiver to sea Octo Sniper.

Cheers, Al.

Seem reasonably thick to me, you'd need a lot of drag pressure to straighten them. I guess a fish biting down might be a little different (though not nessicariy worrying).

The raba rabas have pretty small, thin hooks too.

Edit: Colin, fish + lumo = mr sparkle :p

I reckon it would be more likely the pressure from the fishes mouth that straightened them, rather than drag pressure from 20lb braid.

They look thick enough but what's the steel like, I've used Big Guns and Hoodlums for Bluebone and to look at you'd think they were similar strength but the Big Guns are chewing gum in comparison.

I've caught baldies at Abrolhos on them and a few Dhuies to 11kg and cant complain about hook strength, the skirts on the Gillies jigs is a lot more durable than the others too.

I've sold hundreds of them and yet to have a complaint about them, the only feedback I've had has been all positive so far, unlike a couple of other brands out there.

Not to mention, a lot more

Fri, 2008-07-18 21:38

Not to mention, a lot more skirt (the rabas look like they're skimping a lot), cheaper, lots of lumo on the head and some on the skirt and have a default wobbling action. Not sure how the rabas or other jigs go when you leave them still, but the gillies kind of move side to side. Its not a constant motion wobble which looks unusual though (but not in a bad way)

Biggest dhuie so far was on a gillies. Admittidly, it wasnt all that big in relative terms :p

Yes I own some
Yes I have used them, though only caught a blackarse

And amoungst people who I talk and work with a few have mentioned problems with the hooks, though they are using 50-80lb braid

Mainly on pinkies

do you think it's worth the extra money to upgrade hooks?

jigs

Fri, 2008-07-18 22:05

300 gram and the 100 gram from the pic above, most sambo jigs would have gamma or the likes in 9/0 or 10/0 fitted and around the 300 to 500 gram mark.

The Okta style jigs are designed more for slow jigging for bottom species, the fact that a 28kg sambo was landed on a 100 gram model with standard hooks is a testiment to the Gillies product.

I've been using mine with upto 80lb with the 150 to 300 gram jigs and have had no problems what so ever.

Okta Jigging

Fri, 2008-07-18 22:26

Piece of cake!

Drop ya okta over the side and leave it a meter off the bottom with the rod in the holder, let the boat work it for you on the waves/chop/swell.

Then drop a bait over as per usual, you'll be surprised at how often the jig gets hit Wink

With the octa jigs (havent

Mon, 2008-07-21 12:18

With the octa jigs (havent tried the others yet) you can just leave the rod in your hands or in a rod holder and do nothing. The jig has some action due to the current and the rocking of the boat will move it a little. Otherwise you can work them in slow, wide sweeps. You can also wind in slowly. They might work faster, I dont know, but if so I would guess then perhaps that it would be on fish that would take the knife type jigs? Mix it up and see what works. (seeing as the fish can have different preferences at different times)

If you dont have a spare

Fri, 2008-07-18 22:46

If you dont have a spare rod, you can use the jigs as a sinker weight on a paternoster too. Depends on the drift as you can obviously get larger sinkers than jigs. You can only use two droppers as the jig counts as a set of hooks though. Keeping it off the bottom still applies (but then I dont like dragging my sinker either).

Makes you wonder whether a jig assist hook and a skirt on a painted sinker would work too :p

Hlock if you don't like

Mon, 2008-07-21 12:27

Hlock if you don't like dragging your sinker it kind of defeats the  idea of bottom bouncing.

One thing I do know is that you catch more fish when you are on the bottom!

Hence the name :p

Last time I was out, I caught more fish than anyone and i dropped to the bottom and wound up a little (so near, but not quite on, but it does occasionally hit). I think my dad was a little too busy getting snagged :p Seemed to work fine on that occasion, but I havent experimented with it enough to be sure.

Though, not everyone can avoid snags while bouncing the bottom like you Matt, so some of us have to dumb it down a little to avoid loosing so much gear, lol. With practice, I should be able to get a little lower slowly slowly

A bit of a difference there mate, im far from a experienced bottom bouncer (geeze that sounds rude) but I keep the sinker bouncing on the bottom, so you loose a sinker every now and again, so what ?

I am begining to think that you do quite a bit of "Fishing and Baiting" on this site Hlokk.

its not how thick the hook is though, its the material the hook is made out of . i can vouch for the ruba rubas hooks as my 80 lb braid broke before the hooks gave way in a snagged situation

Yep I Agree

Sat, 2008-07-19 13:54

I think Diji has hit the nail on the head there.

I personally have not used the Okta (allthough I have a couple in the tacklebox)

But I wouldn't be thinking a Sambo has the power in its mouth to straighten a hook because if it did I wouldn't be chucking my hands in its mouth to get mine out. Grab a pair of plyers and see how hard it is to do it by hand.  I can tell you I tried it a couple of minutes ago and yes they do bend but its not easy to do.

If the hook did straighten on 20lb I like Diji would be thinking there is a major problem with the hooks material.

I have looked at the hooks on my 2 Okta jigs (300g I think) and agree with Al, I don't think you would need to replace them as they look and feel more than strong enough.

Have a great day.

Hobie,

I caught a baldie and a big queenie on the Ockta yesterday. No problems at all.

I also had one snagged up a couple of weeks ago when I had to snap the line off. 50lb braid with 80lb leader. I snapped the leader off and the hooks were still hanging on.

I reckon the hooks on the Ockta are fine.
