What happened to the abalone? What do i look for (greenlips)

Just went to Augusta (WA) a few days ago looking for greenlip abalone. This was my first time, but my dad, who was a second timer :P managed to find the place that he went his first time (15 years ago lol...so prolly not the right place). Anyway, 50 minutes in, i still hadn't found anything...i was looking at the places where the rock was bare (and was about 50-100 m swim out) and water about 3 m deep. I managed to snag one...just over size. I was just wondering if i was looking in the right spots (like...not in the grassy areas) and its just the wrong time of the season....or if i was looking in the wrong spots. Are abalone actually that hard to find these days. Apparently, 15 years ago, when my dad first went, he was looking in a similar spot, but you could see loads. What happened???

The greenlip was good for dinner though :P :) :)

I go down that way quiet a bit diving for Greenlips and Brownlips Abalone. I always manage to find heaps of brownlips but rarely find the greens. I usually am only diving in about 3-6m but i always find them under very well hidden thin caves and crevases. I get most of mine around this time of year to. I have noticed though that its easier to spot the greenlips than the brownlips, maybe the greenlips get hammered because of this???

And your right about them tasting good i reckon those big abalone piss all over the smaller roes abalone in taste. I only ever keep two when i go diving as thats enough to make a meal for 4 people(if they are big ones).

Look right under rock ledges/crevices/caves etc. Its not an easy caper to find the good ones....

find a good hand hold, deep breath and hold your breath for as long as possible while you contort into small spaces like a chinese gymnaust.

Would anyone be kind enough to draw a map...:P

Like...i swim out, but all i can see is grassy patches on flat rock. No crevasses....nothing. how far do I swim out...and where...and which side of the lighthouse?

i dived down there last yr , had some tips only went out 600m in the boat dived a hole for crays , got a cple, already been raided, continued south found an awesome wall, grrens/browns scattered all the way down, had our limit in 10 mins, sw of finders ramp 600-800 metres, due south about 1km

never forget it, first time i dived it, the limits were 30 abz, which we got easily..

but we surfaced about 1.5km from boat and the young blokes couldnt piuck us up.. no idea, we had no air, and a shitload of abs/crays. plus saw a cple of big sharks under us.. was a scary exp//i had like 20 fat abs and a few crays

my buddy had a few abs and a shitload of southern fighters.., wouldnt like to do it again put it that way.was waiting for a bite.. the cple big sharks were close and very curious

Down our way, Esperance that

Down our way, Esperance that is, greenlips are always deeper, 4-10 meters freediving and on granite bottom or ledges with a thick weed coverage that you have to move to reveal the ab. The roe are always easier to get as they live in shallow washes and if you pick your tides and swell can get your baglimit without even getting your feet wet.

As for taste.....after 20 years of getting both I'd have to say roe have it hands down....catch them, bang ab knifebutt in them to relax muscle, shuck and clean them...quick hit with tenderiser...egg and breadcrumbs and then shallow fry quickly without overcooking. Also freeze great after tenderised and egg/breadcrumbed. Greenlips wont do that.

We used to have year long 24/7 season...
