monster pinky

this photo is a couple of years old but i came across it today and thought you guys would like it , its my regular deckie and best mate Ray Jones and the pink was caught in 41 m off two rocks in 07 it was 116cm long and around 17 kg it looked like a big dhu when it came up its gob could have swallowed a grapefruit easy, he got it on a bluebacker 100 and a sweep fillet for bait .

Perhaps he just havent "humped" enough females!!!!?

Awesome fish by the way.

Didnt think they got this big here. More likely NZ etc

bloody nice fish!!

I dont know where the misconception of only the males having a hump on their head though!! The hump only really happens on any snapper, male or female, and indicates what type of ground they feed on. The humps and noses come from feeding on hard reef and coral and them constantly knocking into it to get a feed!!

when i said it weighed around 17 kg it actually weighed right on 17 but it was filleted then he decided to weigh it cos he had found his scales so he weighed the carcass then the fillets in a bag so with guts / blood etc i would say it would have weighed near 18 out of the water and in saying that it was quite thin for such a beast of a pink!!

That's a huge pinky!! Shame he didn't weigh it on certified scales, it would have been a state record.

That woulda been one hell of a fight on a 100 bluebacker. Had to be pretty stoked with that (in the pic he's looking a little pained though, haha).

How did the fillets come up? Wondering if due to the size of the fish, were they the same as smaller ones or different?

that one would be a fish of a lifetime. it would even beat a 20 plus kg dhuie as it is a fish that you would never see that size again. top effort to the angler. i wonder how many rigs that pinkie has busted up in the past

hi Andy , the 4 drifts over that patch of coral would have made some great footage for "two rocks mayhem" thats for sure 2 dhus 11/18.5 kg , 1 x 30kg sambo, and that prehistoric pink! it still fishes well from time to time too!! cheers
