Help wanted - Exmouth Livebaiting and the gulf

Heading up to Exmouth when Gamex is on but not fishing the comp this year. Have had some success with marlin in the past but always on lures. Would like to try some livebaiting this year but need help with the finer points. Do I bridal rig a small tuna and troll slowly or is drifting a better option. What size live bait to use - length / weight. Are some baits better than others or just whatever I can catch. And what size hook - J or circle ?

Would also like to try some light tackle catch and release stuff in the gulf . Have been to the murions , Exmouth reef etc but never ventured into the gulf towards Learmonth or the other side of the gulf. To get there we would be launching at exmouth. Has anyone been in there that could suggest places to try and what to expect in the way of fishing and is thre anywhere to camp for an overnighter.
Thanks
Paul

transducers for furuno

Any body tried or uses a shoot through hull transducer, have thought about installing one to see if it gets a clearer signal and less interferance, but was told the other day that because your going through hull it weakens signal dramatically, if any one has some advice it would be appreciated, have sold my last boat and having 6m centre cab built at present and if going down that path need to contruct box and access as construction proceeds

Thanks Brian..........

exmouth teasers????

well with everyone heading to exmouth soon, well it will feel like everyone , how many people are going to be running teasers and what sort?

personally i run a witchdoctor on the starboard side and a mixture of bird teasers and beer cans on the port side with a skirted lure behind it,

have been contiplating getting one of those spreader bars but with only 2 of us on the boat this year i think it might be a bit overboard so will just run the 2, is going to be some quick work getting them out and the other rods.

whats everyone else preferances and plans for teasers this year, especially with some advice for the guys planning to make there own, i would suggest wire thru the cans, the mono will get cut thru in a hurry with all the tossing and smashing they take in the wash.

cheers

Bunbury Offshore Fishing Classic

The 2009 Bunbury Fishing Classic will be a 2 day event this year being held on the Feb - March long weekend. There are thousands of dollars worth of prizes. Apart from the top fish prizes there are another 10 mystery prizes including 1 weeks accommodation in Exie and the list goes on. I've fished this event the last few years even managing to jag a prize one year, but all in all it is a great fun weekend.
If anyone is interested...? PM me and I can pass on the details.

expensive reel

I went up to cambells protackle yesterday and today to do their stocktake and seen a beautiful saltiga 6500 dogfight for $1550 and a Alutecnos 80w 2 speed for $1595. This got me thinking are these the most expensive reels and if not what are the most expensive spinning and overhead reels on the market?

Broadband on the road

Hi guys,

I'm from Ireland and I will be arriving in WA on the 14th March. My plan is to buy a van in Perth, stuff it full of fishing rods and then head up the coast for a few months.

I am looking for two pieces of advice

1) who will give me the best mobile coverage? I will be travelling alone in a strange company so I want the best mobile coverage I can get just in case the unthinkable happens

2) as I will be mobile I'm wondering what kind of wireless broadband services are available in WA and again the coverage is an issue

Any advice would be greatly ppreciated

Cheers,

   Liam

PENN Reels

Got a couple of PENN reels which have had the bail springs go,

A couple of weeks ago my first reel busted a bail spring, which I though one of my kids broke, but last night I was using the other one I had and it just gave way on me, same thing bail spring as gone.

These reels I brought from Ryan's store in O'conner the year he opened up, so they have lasted me a good  couple of years, these reels have been great, allways done the job for me.

Can I still get parts for them, can I order them in ???

Reel in Question is a PENN Captiva CV2000

Really P!ssed off

Hi Ya,

Was riding around the bridges (Windan to Narrows and back) yesterday (Saturday 14/2/09) and saw three people fishing under the Narrows.  They had about 5 or 6 bream in their plastic bag, not one of which would have been longer than 15cm.  They were gibbering away on their own language.  Anyway, one came closer to where I was watching from so I told him that they was well under legal size limit and told him what they shuld be.  At least he didn't try the 'speak no English' crap.  Anyway he gibbered away to his friends moved his bag closer to where they were standing and kept fishing.

After ridign off a little way I rang Fish Watch and got the recoded message about waiting to be attended to then got cut off.

This isnt the first time my interaction with this so called 'organisation' (they should look up a half way decent dictionary and find out the meaning of the word!!!) has been unsatisfactory and so I too am now a believer in the fact that FishWatch is a complete crock of stinking fecal matter so shan't be wasting my time or phone call costs again.

As far as I'm concerned, close it down and save the tax payer some money.

Cheers.

Tackle Bags

Any suggestions on the best soft tackle bags out there?

I want it to be able to keep the water out on a boat and have enough room for shallow water rigs (chasing KG whiting), some mid depth jigging and tackle for bottom fishing, plus tools. Then I will also want to keep a couple of trolling lures and some squid jigs.

Bottom line looking for something that is going to be able to hold small amounts of a lot of stuff. 95% of my fishing will be either for KG's or bottom fishing for dhueys and the like out the back of Rotto. Want something easy to take on and off a boat.

Also I am a new member, so let me know if there is a better forum I should post to for these sorts of questions.

Thanks Jamin

Fishing today

hey bois

went about 5km off hillaries today with a couple of mates and what a day it was.....

anchored then dropped the lines.....

straight away i hooked a 27cm pink snapper then my mate hooked a ray....

i caught about 7 or 8 small pinkies within 1 hour.

we moved to a different spot and my mate hooked onto another ray

i hooked onto something big but it turned out to be a double header of pinkies lol

i then felt a huge hit and was like wtf was that and then i pulled up a 1kg skippy....

i was the sittin on the chair resting after a hard day fishing when i hooked onto something huge and it just took my line and snapped....

my mate caught a gummy shark here earlier in the day so we thought it was another 1

all in all it was a great days fishing and cant wait til next weekend to get back out on the water....

pce out

Reds and rain

I remember talking to an old boy in Coral Bay a few years ago who claimed that after good rains, red emperor move in closer to shore (30-40m there) to feed.

Was this bloke blowing smoke up my you know what or has anyone else experienced/heard this?

Surf/Rock Spinning Rod

Looking for a good, cheap rod between 9-10ft in length, 2piece and rated to around 8-10kg. Will mainly use it for spinning from the stones using 60-80g metals, want to be able to ping them out pretty far so a rod with a bit of flex would be ideal. For use with 30lb braid and around $150 in price.

Any help appreciated

Flat Rock Saturday Feb 14 2009

An interesting day. Conditions good early arvo but turned to shit and weed when it mattered most. I worked hard for a couple of flathead, a nice shovel nose and some whiting for bait. I met up with a member on the beach. Her forum name is Shorly I think and she hasn't posted here for a while. I am sure she will revive herself again now and once again become active. Nice to meet you Shortly and Hubbie (and dog).
