Fishing mandurah with blue lightening
Submitted by couldntcatchacold on Mon, 2010-03-29 10:14Sunday the 28th of march we and a group of workmates went out aboard Blue Lightening in mandurah fishing in depths between 40 and 120 meters the day being pretty slow overall with 2 dhufish pulled up early on and my pink snapper 4 breaksea cods and then mostly sweep and umndersize pink snapper, Was a great day out lovely conditions and great service the deckies were bloody awesome really felt like they were going out of there way to help people even managing to untangle a 11 person tangle up just so one of the dhu fish could be landed would highly reccomend them to anyone wanting to try fishing mandurah with a charter! very nice boat and a very smooth ride out.

River/Heads arvo report
Submitted by Ollie on Sun, 2010-03-28 23:38Headed out for a quick session with milsey this arvo. We planned to head out the heads and try for whiting/snapper, although this idea was overturned by the fact the sea breeze came in at 12. we decided to try our chances with H/B in the river/heads. at first we anchored near some structure and flicked small rmg's and rapala lures. milsey with a bub squid on bream lure.
Trawled to find some protection from the wind produced skippy and herring.
Found a spot that looked the goods, after me not hooking to a solid strike milsey landed a nice flatty next cast.
fished this spot for a little longer with milsey hooking a reasonable tree and me risking my life to free the lure in distress. We then moved to some likely bream ground happy with the success so far on other species this became our new goal. landed a little bream and decided to call it a day at around 3.

Mulloway in the Swan
Submitted by Cammos on Sun, 2010-03-28 19:56I have done some searches for this but came up empty.
My brother has come to me today suggesting we do an allnighter in the Swan to get a Jewie (read Mulloway, bloody NSW-man). He saw some pics and he is now all keen. I know that these species are not as simple as throw a bait and wait, so I am after a little help on the where. He talked to someone who anchors in the Freo port (it sounded like he tied off to a marker!!!) and floated live baits around and got some.
Any advise or direction on tide, moon, depth, bait, location, rigs, tackle would be awesome.

Sewage washed into Swan and Canning Rivers
Submitted by bod on Sun, 2010-03-28 11:55
ABC News 26 March 2010
The Health Department says the Swan and Canning rivers are not safe for swimming or fishing after sewage was washed into the catchment in Monday's storm.
More than 40 fish have died and crabs and marron have crawled onto the river banks to avoid the contaminated water.
Two sewerage stations in Perth have overflowed, with the run off washing into the rivers.
Jim Dodds from the Health Department says it is not safe to eat anything from the Swan or Canning rivers.
"Don't eat shell fish from the river, they are an organism that concentrates everything from the river and you can never be sure what's in the river especially in a catchment like this.
The Swan River Trust and the Department of Fisheries are trying to rescue the marron from the rivers.
The Department's Craig Lawrence says no fish or freshwater crayfish have been found alive.
"It's a worry, we've actually covered about 75 percent of the river now and we still have 25 percent left which we're hoping will still have something in it," he said.
"I haven't seen this sort of situation before."

boat sinks off City Beach

Man, boy, 6, rescued after boat sinks off City Beach
Edited from PerthNow, March 27, 2010
Mr Imray and Luke - who had both been wearing life jackets spent two hours in the water before the RAC Rescue Helicopter found the missing father and son about four nautical miles off City Beach.
The pair were winched to the helicopter and taken to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital where they were treated for mild hypothermia.
The emergency rescue helicopter started the search after Mr Imray activated the boat's digital EPIRB.
Ms Bouquet said she became aware of her missing son and grandson when police rang her asking if she might know where he was and if he had gone fishing.
She said she eventually tracked down his car to Hillarys marina but then faced an agonising wait as the rescue helidopter began searching for the pair.
They're buying a Lotto ticket tonight.

Worms coming out of herring!
Submitted by smp on Sat, 2010-03-27 15:31Caught a few fish today at Mindarie, one of which was a herring, when it came time to pack up I started cleaning the fish and thought, oh Mr Herring has pooed himself with a long poo coming out of his butt. Looked closer and it was a bloody worm making a break for it! Kinda put me off eating the rest of the fish (though I still might).
Anyone else come across this? I know fish also get worms but is it common? Harmful etc?
thanks

braid knot problems???help
Submitted by drew_ward on Sat, 2010-03-27 14:26On my 2-4 kilo spin soft plastic rod ive spooled it up with 6lb braid.i've spooled it up tight and when using soft plastics i attach a 9lb leader on with a double uni knot.i usually use a 1/4 ounce jig head and i find after 15 or so casts i get these double loop knots somewhere along my braid.some i can pull 1 loop and undo the knot but some become to bad to undo.its so frustrating.im assuming that because its such a small weight theres not enough tension on the line when winding it in...just wondering if any1 has any tips to solve this problem???thanks

Learning things.
Submitted by Auslobster on Fri, 2010-03-26 05:49After reading Kiwi's thread about the dramas on the Finniss River regarding shonky fuel mixes and kinked lines, I thought it might be good to relate some of the unfortunate experiences some of us may have had during our fishing and/or boating adventures. This might help others to avoid the same sort of fate down the track. Obviously, some things are beyond anybody's control but so many incidents are directly related to human error and can be avoided with a little prior knowledge.
Mine are more to do with tackle loss...doesn't have to be overly dramatic, just little bits of info that can help somebody later.
Was bottom bouncing with my son and his mate last Easter holidays when the young bloke became snagged on the bottom. I decided to pull the sea anchor in and motor back up to where the snag was so he could at least get most of his line back. Well I wasn't paying attention and failed to notice that he wasn't winding his line in so I ended up running over it, cutting it off and losing most of the 50lb braid that had been on there. Was lucky it didn't get up on to the prop shaft and possibly damage the seal. What I learnt there was that as a skipper you really have to take in the experience levels of everyone who comes out in the boat and adjust your actions accordingly.
The other one from last year was when I was trolling solo along the back edge of the FFB. An X-Rap Mag20 on one rod and a little Richter Jelly Babe on the other, doing about 7 knots into a light northerly. Bang, X-rap gets hit, put motor into neutral, wind in, dehook and release one 5kg sambo. Meanwhile, the wind has pushed the boat slowly back to where the now stationary Jelly Babe was sitting. Being a skirt, it sank and became snagged up on the reef, where I lost it. The lesson here was, if you're going to troll alone, be prepared to handle both rods, or put yourself in a situation where the drift and/or action of the lure isn't going to bring you to grief.
Again, not necessarily expecting to see dramatic, life-threatening situations, just simple little things that many would not even think twice about but can save someone a bit of aggro down the track.

New 37kg stick advice
Submitted by Choongy on Thu, 2010-03-25 22:06Good evening all, seeking some advice.
I have a Penn 50TW loaded with 24kg braid. Its paired with an old Shimano stick which was state of the art when purchased, but is now well past its time. A couple of recent drubbings by things taking me back into the reef have helped me decide to reload with 37kg, and fat up for a new rod.
I'm after a stand up stick (straight butt, no roller runners) with a tip that folds away relatively quickly. Trying not to creep far past $350.
Any suggestions? Even for a blank, as wouldn't mind rolling one together myself. Or if anybody has something second hand that fits, that could also work.
Many thanks.
