new brute stick

just picked up my new surf rod from cambells tackle in leederville - 12ft 9 inches of brute stick - running 24kilo mono on an alvey 651 c5 - now those big black sting rays cant win!

Apart from Blue Juice and Mills is there any other charter companies

operating in the Perth metro area during the ban period? I have a work mate who is desparate to go offshore for a fish.
Many thanks, Colin Hay

Karatha weather

Karatha crew is this weather going to hold up for the weekend?

How can they police the Ban

Every year you read about people who do the dirty and take too much fish, fish during closures, fishing in sanctury areas and taking undersized fish. you get a slap on the wrist and a fine. But what about the people that dont get caught. People who do it once will do it again and again. But what can you do about.  in an ideal world the fishing ban takes place and the fish get a real chance to recover cause no one can fish for them. But will that actually happen? If you accidently catch a Dhuie that has suffered serious barotraumer will you do the right thing and send him back down, knowing theres no chance of survival. I think That 95% of us will do the right thing.

Over the past 5 years i have been fishing on a boat i have been only checked by fisheries once. How can they possibly police the ban?

i really hope to see fisheries in force. this ban is very important and if proven successful we can have fishing for years to come. So do the right thing peoples.Smile

Hey everyone!

I have just moved to albany down from Perth. Good to be back in the country again!

So tell me where all the good spots are down here. I know somebut would like to know some more. Is there any good fishing clubs/4wd clubs which may be worth checking out?

I am always keen for a fish so if anyone needs a deckie let me know. Love being out on the water and keen to share fuel/bait etc!

Hillarys rock hopping - lesson learnt

Went fishing late arvo yesterday off the Hillarys rocks casting mulies.

As it is a fair hike to get to my spot, I just pack light with bait, gang hooks, rod and reel.

What do you bloody know, I get squid sucking on the mulies, and a bit later some herring mauling it.

Lesson learnt - don't pack too light.  Take a rig for every thing that can pop up off the rocks.

Next time you will see me stacking it on the rocks carrying 10kg worth of tackle haha.

An oldie but a goodie :-)

A woman goes into a store to buy a fishing rod and reel for her grandson's birthday.

She doesn't know which one to get, so she just grabs one and goes over to the counter.

The salesman is standing there, wearing dark glasses.

She says,  Excuse me. Can you tell me anything about this rod and reel?'

He says, 'Madam, I'm completely blind; but, if you'll drop it on the counter, I can tell you everything you need to know about it from the sound
it makes.'

She doesn't believe him but drops it on the counter anyway.
He says,    'That's a two metre Shakespeare graphite rod with a Zebco 404 reel and 5-kg test line.
It's a good all around combination, and it's on sale this Week for $44.'

She says, 'It's amazing that you can tell all that just by the sound of it dropping on the counter.
I'll take it!'

As she opens her purse, her credit card drops on the floor.'Oh, That sounds like a Visa card, says the salesman.
As the lady bends down to pick up the card, she accidentally farts.
At first she is really embarrassed but then realises there is no way the blind salesman could tell it was she who had farted.

The salesman rings up the sale and says, 'That'll be $58.50 please.'

The woman is totally confused by this and asks, 'Didn't You tell me it was on sale for $44?
How did you get to $58.50?'

'The Duck Caller is $11 and the Fish Bait is $3.50.'

During the ban i would like to target dolphin fish HELP or INFO would be great!

Hi guys i have never really fished for dolphin fish and would like if anyone is willing to give. Information on where ( metro waters) and how the best methods ( rigs lures baites etc ) are to catch these awesome fish. i beleive the fads are the best place to start ??? Thanks

Landbased fishos- Where are you going to be?

For all of you landbased fishos out there, where will you be within the next couple of weeks and what will you be targetting?

I for one plan to seriously get stuck into some spring tailor then start my season on the croakers.

Will be hitting the metro beaches quite a bit over the next week or so for some afternoon sessions hoping to crack that 2kg mark,

Where will you be?

fishing with dropper loops

i was just wondering how long do people leave their dropper loops. i notice some of the the tackle stores with pretied paternoster rigs have a much longer loops than mine, Say 40-50cm whereas mine are  20cm... any opinions on what is a good length. can length alter catches.?

Sad Disgusting Photo

In the Bunbury Herald edition today on page 24.

Their is a photo of 3 spearfisherman (On Scuba even worse) holding up a Blue Groper each.

I was deeply sadened, as anyone who has had the experience of diving with them no that they just follow you around like you pet dog. You dont have to have much talent to spear one of these.

I hope the people pictured change their attitude towards spearing Blue groper as that is what nearly finished them off in the first place.

Just had to get it of my chest

Downriggers

Who has one and who uses them.

I know they are very popular for the freshwater guys but not as popluar on the salt.

I have one for my boat  a Canon, still to fit, but am looking at using it for some experimenting this year and especially in exmouth next year.

Any tips ideas etc?

Personally i think it could open up so many  new areas of fishing, and the possibilites endless.

Buffalo Beach Whale Guts

yesterday morning while driving about 1km north of Buffalo Beach(North of Bunbury) their was the remains of a whale, just keeping you guys informed. No swimming for me.

Wilbidanga

Wondering if anyone can help me with a couple of questions about that place Nth of Two Rocks, firstly,

A. Am I gonna have a reasonable chance of getting a decent tailor or mulla there? and

B. Is it okay to camp along there for the night with a fire?

Weather looks good for the weekend so it's either here or back up past Lancelin.

Broome does backflip

BROOME BACKFLIP ON DOLPHIN CULL CITY

BEATRICE THOMAS, The West Australian October 13, 2009, 2:25 am

Broome Shire Council is today poised to reverse a decision to sever ties with the Japanese town responsible for an annual dolphin cull, instead apologising for its actions and organising visits between the towns to "reinforce the relationship". Less than two months after resolving to end its sister city association with Taiji until it stopped the cull, a backlash from the local Japanese community has led three Broome councillors to support a new motion to be discussed at a special meeting this afternoon. The motion, signed by councillors Michael Albert, Nik Wevers and Chris Mitchell, "unreservedly apologises" to the Japanese community in Broome and Taiji for any disrespect caused by its hasty decision and lack of consultation. The motion also recommends inviting the WA Japanese consul- general to Broome, planning a delegation to Taiji to "reinforce the relationship" and investigating exchanges between the two towns in 2011 to mark the 30th anniversary of the agreement. The proposed new resolution, which reiterates the council does not condone the dolphin killings, was yesterday criticised by conservationists who said the council should stand by its first decision. But Cr Albert rejected suggestions it was a backdown. He said the council had failed to get the full story from the entire Broome community and rushed its original decision. Broome shire president Graeme Campbell would not comment other than to say "there's a strong chance" of the new motion being passed by the council.

Shark and whale off Floreat

The ABC is reporting that a 4 m plus White Pointer is chewing on a dead whale off Floreat right now.

My nightmare has come true

Well after six and a half months in the caravan in Exmouth, Karratha and Broome, the day I've been dreading has arrived....we've come back to Perth. What's with this weather? It's freezing. If there's a silver lining I have to go back to Exmouth in November to get or sell my boat so I'm sure there will be a day or two set aside for some more fishing.

Here's a photo of me offering my opinion on the first set of traffic lights I've seen since April.

I have to send out a huge thanks to Adam and Renae for all their help and company in Exmouth, and to Brad, Nicky and the girls who helped heaps in Karratha. The trip wouldn't have been half as long or anywhere near as much fun without them. There are heaps of other people- Jeffo, Joel, Gribbo, Gully, Ewan, Ozzy, DanW plus others who were great to fish and hang out with and made the trip as well.

Highlights of my trip were all the marlin and sailfish with Adam in Exmouth and my week at the Monties with Brad. I've got thousands of photos to sort through so will post a few of the unseen ones up in the future.

If anyone is thinking of doing a similar trip it is the best thing we've ever done. Hayley and I are both lucky we have jobs that let us travel but it's worth all the effort/saving/planning/dreaming for the reward of spending quality time in places most people only get to visit quickly.

Now that we're back in Perth, if anyone needs a decky or wants to collect a few crays soon just let me know. I'm always up for a fish or dive when I'm home and am pretty keen to have a spear off Perth too.

Fingers crossed that we can do it all again someday.

jigging and rovex

Alright peeps

Now a couple more questions.  Firstly jigging

I have aquired my self a few knife/butterfly jigs and am gonna use them in  couple of weeks when I go wreck fishing for pollack and cod, just wondered on the best way to 'work' them in the water, i know roughly but want some tips from the experts.

secondly rovex big boss 7500 reel.  It is available in my local shop and I am thinking about getting one for the said jigging to use with a specialist rod, I know they are made by jarvis walker and that they are not shimano or accurate etc.  But bear in mind i probably wont hook a sambo in the english channel and the worst it will come up against is a cod or pollack in the 5 to 15kg bracket.  So are they any good and will it cope.  The depth is up to 100 metres ish.

Cheers Rog

cheers danno

Hooked - dog fin tuna barotrauma?

Ok, So im watching some tv and theres a show called hooked and they were with some nz Boat designer and celeb fisherman in Aus I think in the coral sea. They were trolling lures and cameras going for dogfin tuna, some great shots but when they finally boated a est 1.5 mt 70kg tuna and went to release it, it was knackered with "a problem with its swim bladder from pressure differential after being brought up" isnt that barotrauma? So they haul the fish back on board after watching it flounder around on the surface in shark infested water (the other hookup got sharked). Their remedy? A release weight? No, They knife the swim bladder and let it go.  Is this a good way to deal with it over the release weight?  Or something because the fish was so large?

Also with all this stuff today on the forums about extra species being added to possibly make the v21 due to bycatch survival problems. How does the rest of Aus compare from us in legislation and education?

I dunno, straight after they went on a rant about dynamite fishing leading to habitat destruction enviro rant and they were trying to catch and release.  But what is the right way?
