just read in the sunday times that the carnarvon jetty has been re opened? is it fully fixed up so we can once again fish all the way out to the end?

5 blokes for a 7-10 day ultimate fishing adventure in Aus, where would you go? cost is not an issue and ideas about overseas destinations are worth taking into account.

G'day,

Just thought I'd put this up so you can all appreciate this little guy as much as I am!

Caught him last Saturday in 26m while whiting fishing, and as soon as he came up, we decided to do the mercy dash back in and get him in the tank.

Awesome little dude, he's a red gurnard, and my son has already named him....Bernard the gurnard!

He's eating really well, and should be hand tame pretty soon I think, as he rises to take food as soon as I put it in already!

Just thought we don't all get to see the variety of cool fish, thanks to my son Justin for the great pic!

hi every1 been trying shore based from mosmans to rocky bay in the last month ,for mulloway and all i have managed to catch 3 stingrays,tomomorrow nite i hope to catch my first mulloway in four years.what are the best baits and rigs lately.i am currently using a sliding  plastic sinker clip,with a number 3 or four star sinker,black crane swivel,1mtr 60lb jinkai leader ,double 5/o gamakatsu octopus hooks,using mulies or live tailor,is there better baits and rigs?

Who's heading out tommorrow for a fish and what are you going to target

Any one tried the daiwa luvias da custom and noticed any difference besides the color change to the last years model was thinking of getting the newer model I currently have last years 3000 model as a back up for squidding but get the 2500 size for me a a 3000 size for a welcome home present for a mate any thoughts.

Fisheries Minister Norman Moore today announced the reopening of Cockburn Sound to commercial and recreational crab fishers from December 15 following a three-year closure.

Mr Moore said crabbing in Cockburn Sound was banned in 2006 to allow overfished stocks to rebuild and ensure the long-term sustainability of the fishery.

“That precautionary action has proved successful and we can now reopen the fishery. It will be open to crab fishers from December 15 this year to March 31, 2010,” he said.

“The length of the season will help the ongoing recovery of the blue swimmer crab population in Cockburn Sound. Fishers need to understand that it was excessive fishing as well as several years of poor recruitment in the fishery that led to the closure.”

Researchers say the adult stock of crabs has risen since the closure but the fishery needs close monitoring to ensure a balance between access to and sustainability of the fishery

The Minister said commercial crab fishers licensed to operate in Cockburn Sound would have to comply with increased size limits and reduced pot numbers.

“The commercial sector cannot take crabs smaller than 140mm across the widest part of the shell (up from 130mm),” he said.

“Professional fishers will also be subject to a 20 per cent reduction in the number of pots they can use.

“Recreational fishers must comply with the crab fishing rules that apply in all crab fishing areas in the West Coast Bioregion - which include a minimum size limit of 127mm, a bag limit of 10 crabs per fisher per day, and a boat limit of 20 crabs.”

Mr Moore said he had also made a decision not to extend the two-month seasonal closure in the Peel Harvey Estuary this year although research had indicated lower than usual numbers of juvenile crabs in the Peel Harvey Estuary.

“Catches will be closely monitored over summer to determine if management action will be required to address any sustainability concerns,” he said.

Recfishwest and the WA Fishing Industry Council will develop a resource sharing agreement for the fishery and are expected to provide the Minister with a report before the start of the next summer fishing season.

Local Government Minister John Castrilli today announced funding for the Bunbury Timber Jetty will be de-coupled from the Bunbury Waterfront project, paving the way for work to commence on the heritage structure within the next few months.

Mr Castrilli said the deteriorating condition of the jetty had become an urgent public safety matter and, given the length of time it would take to secure planning approvals for the Bunbury Waterfront project, the only viable option had been to separate it from the project to enable work to commence as a matter of priority.

Under LandCorp’s overall Bunbury Waterfront development budget, $3.5million had been set aside for works to the jetty, to match a further $3.5million contribution from the City of Bunbury.

Following today’s Regional Cabinet in Bunbury, the Minister said he was delighted to announce that Cabinet had approved separating the jetty from the overall Bunbury Waterfront project, with the $3.5million funding contribution now coming through a separate arrangement with LandCorp.
Under the new agreement, the city will take on all responsibility for any works to the jetty structure.

“Today’s resolution to the critical issue of the jetty is a great outcome for Bunbury, an outcome that was achieved as a result of all parties coming together to think outside the square in developing a solution,” the Minister said.

The State Government’s $3.5million capped contribution for works to the Bunbury Jetty is in addition to its previous $1million contribution in 1997 when the Bunbury Timber Jetty licence was transferred to the City of Bunbury.

when does the sound open for crabs???

im just getting into some serious fishing for the first time and just wondering if you need a license even though i have no intention on keeping the fish i just want to catch and release?.

If i do need a license what areas do and do not need lisences its confusing me a bit??

i was under the impression that snapper and jewy fishing was only banned in the sound from oct-dec, but have since found out it is a total ban?

so i am going fishing on sunday and if i catch a sized jewy-snapper from 60 mtrs and have to release it, to see it float away and get eaten by birds ( i dont think so). what are you supposed to do.

should i park my boat up till dec (i dont think so)

i understand that the stocks are getting lower and lower, but to stop fishing all together for this time is f****ED.

why couldnt they just reduce the limit to 1 per person or per boat or increase the size?

I was thinking of putting out a FAD next year at EXY during the comp next year, we made one up awhile ago, just a 3mt by 5mt tarp in a box tube filled with foam fill for floatation and several floats around the edge and all my deckies CDS from his music collection hanging around the sides plus some windows 96 disks, and anchor on the bottom with a large reef pick , I thought about putting it out a week before the comp up near Helby bank in about 20 /30 mts to attract dolphin/macks which allows most size boats to reach it, we saw this work several years ago and it was very productive. any ideas  !

I'm new to the forum (and failry new to Oz - been here 8 months). 

I've taken my son out fishing a few times and we've managed to get the standard stuff from rock walls - herring, whiting, skippy and leatherjacket. Being here has turned him into a fishing addict as it's so different from the UK and he reads fishing magazines and watches TV shows like they're going out of fashion.

Our target over the next few months are to get a few squid and hopefully a few tailor, but while we've been catching many due to the whether at the moment, I'm trying to get some decent fish to but, at a reasonable price, so my question is:

where can you buy some decent fish at decent prices?

Anywhere in the metro area would be fine as I'm out and about for work. I've tried Drovers in Joondalup which is limited, Market City which has a much wider variety of fish and seems reasonable, Kailes Bros in Leederville which was expensive and I've heard of somewhere in Innaloo but haven't been there yet.

It doesn't have to be snapper, dhuies etc, I'm interested in whiting, flathead, bream etc as well and I don't mind filleting them myself.

Can anyone point me to somewhere I'm missing out on?

I have been using lanolin on my galvanized springs to stop any start of white corrosion. That stuff is a mazing, it nuturalizes any corrosion. My dad got some from work that he uses on his cranes. It was in a solid form where I had to melt it in the microwave and then was able to spray it with a spray bottle.

How many people use lanolin on their boats and where can I buy it in bulk maybe 20 littres

With light winds and low swell predicted for Sunday we were eagerly anticipating the Cockburn Power Boat Association Kid's Fishing Day. We had not been out in the boat for months. 

We woke on Sunday morning to find the wind up to 15 -20 knts and the swell to 2mtrs..mmmmm not so good conditions.  We launched the boat with the kids carrying on about the clouds and the wind and went to the briefing at 7:30am  After chatting with a few other club members we decided to stay around Woodman Pt and see what would land on our lines.  We fished for 40mins, not even a nibble (could not even attract a blowie) we decided to make a run for Carnac Island to try our luck.  The journey over was a little rough but not too bad although there are no photos because I was too busy hanging on. 

As soon as we arrived Joel hooked a couple of lovely Skippy a Wrasse and a couple of Trumpeter.  Ben helped reel in a Wrasse.  All fish were dehooked, photographed and carefully released.  After we hooked a number of Trumpeter hubby decided that it was time to move spots.  

We dropped the anchor a bit further away and began to fish.  However before we could really get into the fish again we heard a loud noise at the front of the boat and realised that the anchor line had snapped in the swell.   I drove and Hubby stayed on the bow as we searched for the remains of the floating rope with anchor attached.  After passing it several times without being able to retrieve the line hubby yells out from the bow 'come and get me' and jumps in.  He grabbed up the rope and I drove along side him.  Joel threw out the bow line to help dad back to the boat.  With everyone back on board we hauled in the ellusive anchor and headed back to the club for lunch. 

Once back at the club we handed in our records of released fish, had some yummy sausage dogs for lunch and caught up with some other members.

Joel was awarded third prize for the most points of fish caught (and released) in the under 10s age range.  Ben was awarded an under 6yrs particpation certificate for having a go.  Both boys were so excited.

There were also two 'door' prizes drawn out of a hat.  One of the prizes was a Fishwrecked shirt and sticker kindly donated by Fishwrecked.  The second door prize was a camping pack donated by BCF.  Other prizes were donated for the older kids by Saltwater Marine.  All the kids went home with a prize for having a go.

It was a fantastic day with about 40 kids participating and it was really good to catch up with old friends and meet some new friends.  Thanks everyone for a great day.

Im going down to Walpole this Saturday for 2 weeks, im taking my 4.2m center console tinny down as well. any one got some good tips or spots to go fishing down there ? was thinking heading up the river and chucking softplastics around for bream and lizards. Probally go check out skipy rock aswell.will i need to bring much berly to bring the fish around ?

Is ther any chance of a mulloway at night around the river
mouth ?

Also can u get out the heads into the ocean and is ther anything to watch out for ? noticed there is some shipwrecks around breaker rock, if the conditions are good wouldn’t mind heading out and chase some pinkies,
which leads to my next question is wallpole under the demersial ban ?
