please explain
Submitted by dumper on Sat, 2009-10-10 14:04Just seen blue juice are offering EXTREME deep sea fishing, so they can dodge the bans over oct, nov, dec. Unless I missed the last media release out of 831, I thought the ban was for ALL demersal fish apart from kgw. Whats going on?

Tailor time with Sherbs and Haong
Submitted by Colin Hay on Sat, 2009-10-10 12:23Sherbs and I got up in the early hours to head up to one of his favourite tailor spots, hoping the weed had moved away and that the tailor had moved in.
We met up with Haong (pronounced Wang) when we got there and found that the dreaded weed looked to have thinned out quite a lot, but the wind and the swell was a fair bit stronger and bigger than forecast.
We made our way out to the fishing hot spot and sent out our rigs baited with mulies hoping for one of the much sort after 60 cm plus metro tailor that can be found at this time of the year.
And after just two casts, my new Saltist 4500 H spinning reel and Moonraker rod were doing battle with what felt like a cracking good tailor.
After angling the fish through the swell and the rocky edges I managed to bring it ashore, only to have it jump off the hook at my feet. Thankfully it landed in a crevice between the rocks and I was able to grab it pretty quickly.

(I was drenched from the spray of the waves pounding over the rocks, but it was worth it when I hooked this beauty).
This was one of the fish Sherbs, Uncle Stu and I have been chasing hard for the past few months. A big, fat tailor. It measured in at 59 cm (not the 60cm I was hoping for) but boy was I stoked.

(My new Daiwa Saltist 4500H is the ultimate match-up with my Moonraker and is the tailor chasing reel that I have been looking for).
While the tailor were around, they were pretty tenative on the bite, but Sherbs soon managed to entice a nice tailor of around 35 cm in length to his bait and into his bucket.

(Sherbs with some of the mornings haul).
After that it was Haong's turn to find the fish and he handled himself with aplomb, landing a fish in the high 30 cm range and one of about 45 cm in quick sucession.

(Judging by his smile I think Haong had a lot of fun on this tailor hunting expedition.)
Then, as quickly as the tailor had come on the bite, it was all over. We were plagued by sand whiting after that, (they were decimating our baits ravenously as soon as they hit the water), but there was no more signs of any tailor. But that is tailor fishing.
We perservered for an hour or so more and met up with Tall Paul, who was busily trying for some herring and whiting when we headed off.
Thanks Steve and Haong for another exciting fishing morning. I am sure there will be many more to come while the big "spring" tailor are around.

bluebone tips please Karratha style
Submitted by crasny1 on Fri, 2009-10-09 10:47OK, have been collecting some nice big spinner crabs (have about 40). Going out no matter the breeze, up here there is always a lea to be found and probably perfect bluebone country.
How best to hook them (the crabs), leaders, hooks (I have some Hoodlums by the boat load), need for sinkers or just drift/waft them down etc.
I have seen and read that some people glue the hook to the crab?????
I was going to use a Monster mesh, Saragosa 8000, 15kg Finn Braid, strong as hell swivel, 4 Turn Unis and 120lb FC leader, probably Jinkai (I have about 10 choices for this). Can upgrade to Saragosa 14000 but seem to overkill the sport and not into Handlines.
Now a mate just bought a boat, went out and SCORED a monster (?wt) blue and I have been trying like hell. He used Pillies????
I must get revenge so all help will be most welcome!
Cheers and happy fishing this weekend.

busso alnighter
Submitted by danno on Fri, 2009-10-09 10:42hey all
it was a while ago but im just putting some photos up of the gear we took on the alnighter on the busso jetty.
we went out there at about 6 and it was so windy but we stayed out there. the first cast with a burly cage was followed up by a nice squid but as soon as we turn away it swam away. anyway there wasnt much happening we got 8 or 9 big hering 3 nice squid and a tailor. the best bit of that trip was that at about 4 in the morning we moving into the shallower water to clean the fish and we heard somthing eating. there were massive schools of tailor of all sizes eating al these bait fish. my dad got one first cast but because the jetty had some metal on the edge the line hit it and it cut. the tailor where going ape and there where moving all over the place. then wen they started to stop eating these dolpins came in and started eating the tailor.
any that just a quick right up of wat happened it wasnt that great but for a first alnighter it was pretty good.
cheers danno.
ps we make a trolly to take all the stuff out with out of a pram.

Pinaroo Point heads up
Submitted by Colin Hay on Fri, 2009-10-09 08:38I took my two daughters and my eldest daughter's boyfriend for a quick fish at Pinaroo last night to see if any of the spring tailor had arrived and to give mye new Saltist 4500H a test run.
Unfortunately it is still pretty weedy down there, so if you were planning on giving it a try I would wait at least a week to see if the weed has moved on.
I did manage I nice 3 foot gummy on the Saltist - which is an awesome little machine.
All the best, Colin

ray man
Submitted by flagpole on Wed, 2009-10-07 19:56hey all
me and the missis just went down to a spot just north of gero not even 5 minutes out of town for an afternoon fishing. We started fishing off a piece of beach got a few hits and misses. Then missed the hole and lost a rig just when the sun hit the horizon. by the time i re rigged and got back in the water there was a lot of water between fish then when i went to retreave my line i pulled then it was snagged " wat the f*ck " but then zzzzzzzzzzzzz the line was peeling no head shakes so i knew it was a ray about 5 minutes later i had the ray on the beach un hooked him and let him go by this time it was dark.
about 20 minutes before the ray 2 blokes rocked up and started landing tailor in a spot that was full of weed " go figure ". i persisted and waited few hits here and there but no hook ups. about the time i was about to pack up and leave zzzzzz then nothing it took everything. so in true form i spat the dumby packed up and came home. might give it a go friday night and have a few more rigs made up.

Blackening shiny swivels
Submitted by Dale on Wed, 2009-10-07 19:55G'day all, sometime ago I got about 100 ball bearing / coastlock swivels from a person on ebay and when I got them I was astounded at how shiny they were, almost chrome like. Now as most of you would know, this could be leading to an unfortunate bust off from something attacking a shiny thing other than your lure or something. So with that explained, can anyone advise me on how to blacken them somewhat to prevent a bite off.
Cheers
Dale
