ANYBODY EVER HEARD OF A POPPER IN THE FORM OF A BABY TURTLE FOR MASSIVE GTs?

was looking at quantem spin reels this evening never heard of them before any body used them or no any info. they look bloody impressive.

What are the most common barra setups people are using these days? I'm off to Broome sometime next month to visit mum and she reckons the barra and inshore fishing is sh!t hot so I want to buy a nice little overhead setup in Perth before flying up. Will also use it in the creeks in town chasing jacks when I get back. Budget = $600 or close to.

hey guys,

my gfs father was keen on taking me for my first crabbing session later this year or early next year.  the only problem is that he hasnt gone out crabbing for a couple of years and was wanting to know where to head these days.

he previously headed to mandurah, with the talk about extended bans etc i was wondering where the best spots should be in mandurah and also are there other places similar distance from perth that you can find them that would be good for a beginner.

ive never done this before so ill take any information you can throw at me.

Evening all, a question for the tackle junkys or reel servicing guys.

When you are checking the bearings do you leave the cover off the sealed bearings when cleaning and re packing or do you just ditch them and replace ????

The covers I'm talking about are the thin shields either side of the bearing usually held on by a small circlip. You usually end up wrecking the cover trying to get them off  because they are so small so in which case I leave the other side on and just repack , reinstalling them with the remaining cover facing the out side of the reel if posible depending on position ..

So far no problems but thought i'd ask, hope I explained myself..

The first SW fishing comp will be held Saturday 7 November 2009.

The event will be centred at Port Geopgraph Marina.

The marina has excellent facilites for boats and allows for plenty of shore options. A Freshwater category will be included.

The rules will be simple and will be posted to all members that wish to participate (but already parrallel the Exmouth comp rules). We will PM them to you once you have paid.  We will decide on the best payment method  and edit the post later.

The cost of the comp will be $20 per adult and $10 children (< 16 years old). All fees will be recycled into PRIZES. We will also have a fishwrecked donation jar on the day.

The comp will be length only and you will need to use a brag mat or similar and a photo for proof. Individual name tags will be issued at the comp. The winner for each category will be based on the longest fish, not weight. The organisers reserve the right for final justification and all photos must be lodged on the day of the comp. Dont stress, plenty of people will have brag mats and cameras so if you dont then as long as you have your name tag it doesn't matter if you borrow the mat or camera (with permission). There are examples already posted on fishwrecked from the exi comp.

While this is primarily a sportfish comp supporting catch and release you are welcome to keep your lawful baglimit fish but we are not going to weigh them for the comp prizes.

We will start the comp at 6am and finish at 4pm. Plenty of time for the festivities........

Tags will only be dispensed and received at Port Geograph marina; but you can fish from wherever you like. But you must observe the start/finish time, so travel time is the responsibility of the individual.

We will post the species list/category prizes in the near future.

The event will be organised by myself and BJ (bluetonic). This is the first comp so no doubt there will be future modifications and happy to accept PM advice/queries.

Hope you all can attend. This is a social event so dont forget to have fun and a prime opportunity to meet fellow members.

its been a while since Ive caught a decent fish...hold on a while since Ive wet a line!!@#!$@

Sat in my boat last night and wrote down all my GPS co'ords i had reminising of the fish i caught from the locations. Today dropped the boat off to Chivers for the new GPS to be fitted (lowrance HDS unit) and while they were at it mentioned a few small issues i was having with the engines, is gonna cost me a bit......

But Ive come to the conclusion.....stuff the weather im going anyway!!!!!!!

No fish in the freezer, boats going green coz its seen more fresh water than salt!!!

Not many people have been out over the past few weeks due to the weather, so there might be plenty of fish moving about in the stirred up water!!!

Long weekend i would expect the ramps to be quite busy, but being in a bigger boat im still heading out 20-25 miles!!!

Fishermen will be paid by the South Australian Government to catch carp in Lake Albert near the mouth of the Murray as part of a two-week trial to reduce fish numbers.

The Government says rising salinity is expected to kill large numbers of fish soon, which would leave the lake strewn with rotting fish.

SA Fisheries Minister Paul Caica says $500,000 has been allocated for the trial.

"The fishermen will be paid inclusive of GST $4.50 a kilo of fish and then we'll look at the catch rate, the effectiveness of ... with a view to, if it's successful, extending it," he said.

i headed to cockburn today in search of the elusive squid. a couple of months back i stocked up on squid jigs from ocean side with excellent advice from ryan. i had attempted to use them a few times since then to no avail, until today!

intentionally leaving all standard fishing gear behind squid was on the agenda.

first attempt was at the ammo jetty at woodmans points, however sundays weather resulted in 0 visibility for the squid to hunt.

next was near the jetty near the cockburn boat ramp. no luck here either, although the water looked good i couldnt see any weed beds anyway. during this time a HUGE ray came by and entertained me for a while.

moving on...

i ended up at a groyne facing south toward jervoise bay. taking some advice from honsu i found some shallow weed beds and cast away with my orange yozuri aurie q neo.  FIRST CAST and i was on! i initially though it was a lump of weed i was pulling in as i hadnt felt something like this on my rod before, but no it was pulling!  it was big...later measured to 24cm.

about a half dozen or so casts later i could see another squid following my jig. it followed it all the way to my feet, and BAM! ink squirted from the water a just missing me. this one ended up at 19cm.

well a great day...besides the sunburn through the clouds...at least i didnt get inked!  id just like to thank all who have answered my questions and those who have recently posted info on squid jigging techniques etc.

i think im gunna be a keen squidder from now on!

hi every1,i was just wondering ,if any swan river mulloway are about or is it still early to chase them?

Headed down to my lucky beach again last night the wind was up tides and moon were still right so had a fair bit of confidence. On the way down i get a call from my mate saying he just got busted by what he thinks was a pink so that got me there a bit faster. Got there at 7:30 set up and no more than 20 seconds of my bait being in the water i was on after a very good fight alot better than the night before's fight i hada 10kg pinky in the wash next cast same result but i let a mate bring it in which was hilarious to watch she would struggle to be 30kg and no more than 5 foot tall and the pinky nearly pulled her in the water. As another 10 odd kg pink hit the beach she was ecstatic to say the least. Went quiet for about an hour then another mate arrived his bait was soaking for under a minute and down the rod went and hurtling towards the water he just got it and landed anothervery good pink. 10 minutes later another mates rod hits the sand and flys towards the water i dived for it and just got the butt end and gave it to him sure enough another very solid pinkie. As i was landing his fish another rod goes off with another good 10 or so kg pink We then had 5 which was 1 each except one mate who was still empty handed he had an assignment due today so he decided to head off as soon as he mentioned leaving sure enough his rod went off with another solid pinkie. We all had one each and decided to call it quits at about 10:30 after an unbeleivable nights fishin where we broke alot of PB's and first's. Fair to say ill be down there again tonight catching and releasing if im lucky enough to get a few more

Hey all, i have an old dinghy that i want to fix up, the paint job is scratched up and i was wonding what is the best way to remove the old paint? and once removed will i need to recoat with either paint or a clear finish to prevent electrolysis? i have also read some old forum's on this topic but cant find a solution. And also whats the best way to go when it comes to decking, should i use normal ply and coat it or buy marine ply?

Any imput appreciated and thank's in advance.

hay people heading out tomo morning for a bream fish is there any good spots going off at moment? what are your technices and rigs for bream fishing?

I know there are most probs heaps of info on this , but mainly been sticking to the beaches in rockingham with limited success , just curious if anyone could help me with some info on some other metro beach spots around perth which are decent for some fish , not nessacerily interested in getting a feed, just catching some tailor, snapper, herring , etc, and putting them back would be fine.just  weather aint to flash atm, want to feel a decent fish on the end of my rod atm. ThANKS much appreciated guys

I am sure a lot of people may already visit this site, but it may be of use to some new members.
I know that I use it a lot to see what the conditions are like at some of the spots around town.
Unfortunately today some of the cameras look like they may have been knocked out by the strong winds.

Dont know if anyone else is having the same problem , but i found recently when drifting along i could zoom in and ramp up the sensitivity to around 70/80% and had good readings, as soon as my motor started and revved higher than 1400 rpm the screen would black out with interference and cover the fish and i would have to cut back the sensitivity to 30 % and then show no fish, as shown on the picture above coming up a bomie in 65mts the sounder shows fish and good bottom as i rev the motor to 15/1600 revs to move the boat into a better drift i got inteference,   after a lot of trial and error i found the transducer was getting sound /noise interfernce from the prop and i had to get the transducer more than a mt away before it dropped of to allow to sounder to work clearly and works well even at 20 + knots , i will be installing a through the hull transducer 1200 mm infront of the motor to resolve the problem

After seeing that the weather looked pretty nice on saturday night i decided to give the pinkies a crack in the sound. Got out at about 4pm and seen about 30 odd boats group together including the pro snapper boat so i got my hopes up. Sounded around the boats for about an hour but no schools to be seen :(. Went over to CBH for a crack anchored and waited around for about 2 hours without a sniff but wasnt going to give up so out to the D9 it was and sat on that from 7pm until 2 without a bite and decided to call it a night so in with the lines and hit the hay. Woke up at 5 and sounded around for another 2 hours and still no schools so very dissapointed and tired i went home. Slept from 10 until 5 then got a call from my mate saying hes going to have a crack for some pinkies of the beach and i couldnt resist so set the gear back up and left at 6:30 to a beach somewhere between rockingham and mandurah ;). The wind was howling the moon and tides were right so we were looking pretty good to get one although i did say that the night before aswell. After a few hours and a lot of seaweed finally got a hookup after a really weak fight that only took about 5m of line a big pink head came through the little breakers and i knew ide finally got one. My mate leadered him up on to the beach measured 90cm and 9kg took a whole scaly mackeral. Stayed for another few hours but no more interest. Its my first pinkie for the season and my first decent fish off the beach.
