LB Lure size?
Submitted by buschy on Sun, 2012-04-29 18:18Hey folks,
I'm fairly new to fishing with lures (HBs, metals) and as I slowly catch more fish, I'm gradually getting more confident in using them as a genuine alternative to bait - particularly when conditions make lure the sensible choice.
With a 2-4kg Dropshot, I find I'm limited to lures 15g and less. Anything bigger seems to be just a little bit too much strain on the rod. I typically choose a 10g baitfish - absolutely love this size lure as it seems to cast and respond like a dream. I've caught fish of all sizes - tiny gobbleguts, blowies, the little stargazer yesterday - through to a 45cm tailor.
Last year, the lads flicking lures at Yeagarup for Salmon could not get into anything on the 30g lures, but dropping to 15g seemed to improve results drastically.
I get the distinct impression that I am better off staying small - as it seems the larger fare do not seem to be put off and are happy to pursue a small flash of metal. In fact, a lot of research into the stomach contents of larger fish will validate this - as even some monsters seem to prefer to snack on little bite size shads and baitfish.
Just wandering what other LB Fisho's have to say on the matter...whether they have more success chucking out larger varieties of metals - or more joy on the smaller lures?
Cheers,
Buschy

Soft Plastics Rod
Submitted by metroLBfisher on Sun, 2012-04-29 17:42Had a few soft plastic rods over the last year or so, pretty much all have snapped with hooking on to sambo's etc.
was just wondering if anyone would recommend any in the cheap to medium price range!
mainly used for targetting snapper,l sambo's, dhu's etc and one that has a bit of pull to it will be using 20-30 pound braid.
Cheers

spaniards off rotto yesterday!!!
Submitted by Ryan C on Sun, 2012-04-29 14:25hi all, just a quick one for anyone interested i went out with my mate Joffa in his 560c barcrusher yesterday and we went to target spaniards on the south side of rotto as there is a heap of bait on the south side , we trolled deep divers (red head xrap 20 was the standout!!)anyway we bagged out with 4 macks of 10/12kg in the first hour!1 we also got a couple of striped tuna which give a good account of themselves and were released!.all fish were caught on baitschools which were quite deep and along the 30/36m zone about a mile and a half off the south side of the island. they are definately on out there and with that much bait (tonnes) they should hang around a bit longer for sure so if you get the opportunity in the next few days, get into em!! cheers (sorry guys no pics left the blackberry at home!!!)

Ken noahs
Submitted by scotto on Sun, 2012-04-29 09:38I was just reading gallash's latest post, plus the south west boys exxy report, etc, etc, and it seems the sharks are making their presences well and truly felt throughout not only exxy, but the whole state.
One of older supervisors at my work religiously goes to Broome for 2 months every year, and has said the last 4-5 years have successively gotten worse and worse, to the point he is not taking his boat anymore, as he looses upto 90% of his fish to the grey coats.
Me and a few of my mates have noticed a definite increase in gettin sharked in the last few years in exxy, to a point where this years trip ( in a few weeks now), I'm having to rethink the whole plan of attack. It's not cool hittin every spot, and having bomber reds ( you know it's a red ) gettin smashed within 5-10m of the bottom.
I had rarely caught a shark in metro, but this last season caught 5, and I haven't fished in the last 3 months due to a knee recon.
Anyone else noticed these things, or got any explanation to their increased presence?
Is it time the government lifted the max size limit on whalers, or permitted more commercial shark fishing? Do you reckon it would make any difference?

I wanna boat!
Submitted by Turbo Tim on Sat, 2012-04-28 14:06Yesterday I went out on a friend's boat, we spent over 8 hours on the water for a couple of whiting, wrasse and skippy and I talked him into stopping for some squid just off Long Point boat ramp. It was very apparent being even 100-500m offshore changes your whole fishing world without having to sail across the horizon for marlin. I want to get some kind of cheap boat/tinnie purely to get a little offshore. There is a fair bit of experience here and lots of knowledge so I'm gonna ask a couple of questions and hope for some well qualified advice.
1. Is old fibreglass (80's) ok or can it hold some hidden time bombs? I wondered if the colour has faded can this mean in any way the fibreglass has become eg. old and brittle? I wondered if there were obvious tell tale signs when looking at boats that scream move on. I have seen several old fg models within my price range that are faded, don't know the pros and cons between fg and aluminium.
2. Is it reasonable to think up to $4000 can get me out on the water? Yesterday was 5-10knots all day and I figured 3-5m boat 20-40hp out the back of Garden Island, or anywhere in Warnbro/Cockburn Sound could be a helluva lotta fun, more than sitting on a jetty at any rate!
3. It struck me a good fishfinder/gps is essential- does anyone agree with this?
4. Mostly - Are there any old(or young) salts who can give me any "I wish someone had told me this" type of tips before I go and blow my dollars on a floating disaster?
Thanks for any help, it will be very much appreciated.

Red Emperor and Coral Trout
Submitted by snapper on Fri, 2012-04-27 19:29Some of the fish that have eluded me, so next trip to Shark Bay in July I am going to try target them. I have caught undersize Trout of Turtle Bay so there and the Dampier Reef are a starting point for me, has anybody had more luck on bait or lures ?
Red Emperor I have never seen one on the boat, I have been told to fish around Crayfish Bay but I have also been told to fish in at least 50mtrs.
Any suggestions ?

Weather??? Stuff it looks good any1 keen leeder tomcat/westend/macky troll. (phone quality pics added)
Submitted by Righteo on Fri, 2012-04-27 09:54Have been watching the weather (seabreeze) all week and originally thought thursday, friday, saturday would all be viable options and even yesterday friday still looked good. What did i miss? I suppose i wasnt looking at any barometer readings or checking other weather reports, guess the 5 p's came into play on this one and so much for a dash to rotto for a troll this arvo.
*edit*
Any deckys that want to chuck in for fuel and wash the boat after blah blah.
Meet Aquarama marina by about 1pm, tacklewise bring what ya want but the plan is just for a pelagic troll along west end, last 2 trips produced 2 macks 5 stripeys and a couple of missed hookups.
PM me if any1s keen.
