Colour Sounder buying advice

FW Crew,

Thinking of updating my Lowrance sounder, had her for five years or so and been good but think i might go with the flow and grab me a new cheapish colour job.

I like the lowrance that I had but a mate has just bought a GME for under a grand and was wondering if anyone can tell me if they have bought any other breeds that would be comparable. I know its usually a case of you get what you pay for but I sure you guys have experience with models you could perhaps recommend.

HDS Gen 2

With all the Furuno vs HDS discussion / banter that regularly raises it's head, it might pay to throw the new option into the mix ?

Looks like the sounder gap may have been bridged a bit, no ?

Snorkelling for crays?

Hey guys never tried catching crays but was wondering if you could snorkel for them in shallow water under 5m? Went for a dip in one of the bays at garden island the other day and the crackling sound underwater was almost deafening! A guy I know said to dangle a dead wrasse or fish In front of the ledges and holes to draw them out then nab them? Not sure how much truth there is to his story but wanted to know what you guys think, I'd be happy just to get one!

My Big Koks produces MARLIN

Yes, Yes, Iam Back.

Like a Bear coming out of hibernation.

Well here is the story.

Got the phone call from my mate in Carnarvon ( The Long Haul ), GP you need to come to Carnarvon the weather for Friday 2/11 to Sunday 4/11 is looking fantastic and we are heading to your favourite spot Koks Island. Big sigh, dropped my head, I was in Mullewa and heading back to Perth so no chance of getting there however wished him luck and told him to catch a BIG ONE for me and to give me a call on Sunday night.

All Sunday afternoon I waited for the phone call to come as if waiting for the call from Whitey to tell me he had a spare spot on board after the fishing ban.

At 7.30pm the phone rang with some mad man yelling and screaming words I could only believe to be bullshit.

GP, BIG FISH, BIG FISH, THE BIGGEST FISH, You should have been here, BIG FISH, MAAAAAARRRRRRLLLLLLIIIIIINNNNNN.

Okay calm down, what happened.

"We went to your favourite spot", yeah, "I put the spoon lure out as we saw some tuna and hoping to catch one or a mackie", yeah, "On my shitty $40 rod and $100 reel", yeah, "About five minutes later the reel screams off, Alan grabs the rod", yeah, "This BIG FISH jumps out of the water". What Was it, What Was it I yelled down the phone, "GP A MARLIN, A F#@*N MARLIN.

BULLSHIT!!!!, NO WAY, YOUR KIDDING, BLOODY HELL, Well done Grayz, tell me more.

The fight lasted for 3 to 4 hours.  They had it within 2 to 3m of the boat about four times.  With two on board they roted the rod when the other was stuffed.  They called Carnarvon Sea and Resue for advice & help, it finally broke off near the boat, the fish swam off with the cheap arse spoon lure wrapped around it's bill.  If anyone catches that Marlin, Grayz would like that lure back.

Size: about 12 to 14 Feet Long without the bill length, Weight No idea but someone could tell us what they estimate. Photo on his mobile phone so not sure of quality.

He thanked me for doing a great job tying his knots last time we met, he hadn't re rigged since then. At that point I hung up.  Whitey why didn't you Call ?????

Cheers

First cyclone for the season

Just had a look at the BOM site. Look like we have our first cyclone for the season, even if it is out near Cocos, it still counts.

Nice and early......

Trigg Boat Ramp

Anyone use this? seen skis go out there but never boats or tinnies, ive srfed there when theres waves and snorkell when there aint but never considered launching there.. would make an easy access to centaur...

More wednesday whites

Picked up these today out from Garden Island. Bit of surge around today and a not so friendly wobby has taken up residence in our favourite cray cave. He had a crack at us to begin with but he took the hint with some cray loop prodding and disappeared. Am sure he will be back though.

Coral bay

Hey everyone

I am heading up to coral bay in april (i know its a long time away) and need to get a new rod and reel combo. I was just wondering if anyone knows any reliable combos that can be used for both Land based and hopefully if we have a boat some boat fishing.   Thanks for any opinions

P.s. anyone want to give away some information about some good spots both for LB and on a small boat.

Thanks Guys

Lost/Stolen cray pots and your gear ID

Lads

quick question lost two pots this season, about the replace them but im quite nevous about resetting them due to my lost pots and the gear ID numbers. If they were stolen hopefully the floats have been replaced.

So is there some where to report to that i have missing cray pots, got no idea where they are and i am re setting two new ones with that same gear ID number?

Jurien Bay weekend fishing

 Hey Guys,

Had a load of fun on the weekend up at Jurien Bay and managed to get some fishing done. Plenty of snook, little tiddlers, and a load of tailor up there. This was off the Jetty and using mulies for bait. Unfortunatly none of my tailor were big enough to keep but a few of the lads were pulling them well over 40 cm!

Enjoy your fishing!

Salting bait

Has anyone tried salting bait? In particular mulies?

I have heard it is a great way of keeping bait fresh without a freezer (eg, when camping). I have also heard that it keeps the bait nice and firm and the fish seem to like it. the mulies stay on much longer.

Has anyone got any experience with this? Good or bad?

I know how to do it.... I am jsut wanting to know if it actually works & the fish like the bait??

thanks

Guilderton/Moore River Tailor

Went camping at Moore River a 2 weeks ago and decided to take the missus fishing one morning.

She pulled out 3, I got none and the old guy next to us got 1 (the other 9 guys go nothing)

She was using the red/white Halco popper and the tailor just went berserk.

I did manage to pull out this bream on a lure (my first, I am so proud)

Lure fishing

Hey everyone first day on this site and firstly let me say i love ya attitude towards fishing plus all ya cracker pics and stories!! I've really been a bait user all my life pretty much and really keen to learn the art of lure fishing. I have used small minnow looking lures around swanbourne and nth cott trying for some tailor and have also tried using prawn stars in the river for flatties all with no luck whilst i still catch the fish on bait in the the same areas. Now i know some of u are going to say maybe i'm not knotting it right to make it look natural, but i have researched that and i know i have that expect right. Any help would be so helpful as i am putting a landed fish on a lure one of my goals for the summer. Cheers and goodluck

Crays

Hi all.  Reading a lot about crays. And lots of terminology on here I don't understand.

What is a "white" cray??  And when they're buried and stuff like that. I'm interested in getting pots, but it seems like there's heaps you need to know, and I haven't a clue where to start. Other than I have a boat and love crays.

Only recently was I able to work out what a SBT was and that's because I saw a pic!

Thanks everyone.  I'm learning sooooo much off this site. It's truly a wealth of knowledge.

new apprentice

Hey all new on this site and just wanted to say g'day. Grew up in Newman WA so most of my school holidays involved the old boy taking the family to the north west coast mainly for fishing. Spots like, coral bay, exmouth, shark bay, 80 mile beach, onslow and so on...plenty of big fish and wasnt long before dad was trying to get my on the big fish young. My first decent fish was a 8.5kg golden trevally taken on the beach at 5 finger reef just south of coral bay when i was only 9 years old. I WAS NOW HOOKED!!!!!! My resume runs deep from queenfish in knee deep water to coral trout on boats reef fishing. but............ the only 2 heavy creatures i've landed in metro beaches was a large ray (almost 35kg) and a bronzie pup only 5kg. Where are all the big fish at in perth!!! I've landed tailor, bream, flathead, whiting, herring but never consistently. I love the big fish. i hear the mulla are the ducks nuts down here. Where the fck are they? pls help i hope to land my first mulla by new year.

Catching Spanish Macks

So it looks like a couple of macks have found there way down to sunny Perth already after quite a few reports of cray divers spotting schools of them cruising overhead. So what I want to know is what are some other ways of targetting them besides trolling hardbodied lures? Would trolling a large soft plastic on a lighter outfit work too? Or maybe drifting a livebait out under a float into a big school of nervous bait? Maybe even large stickbaits around some offshore bommies?

I was fishing for tailor last summer on a washy offshore reef when all hell broke loose about 20m behind the reef where a spaniard was ploughing through a school of gardies. I started the ski and putted closer to where i could get a cast in with a 1oz Richter plug on a bream stick and 8lb line. I mustve spooked it as I never saw it again.

So how have you had success catching mackies other than trolling whether it be from the metro area or up north as the ski and I aren't realy suited for trolling heavy outfits around all day..

Cheers guys

Beau
