Hi all, well its been a while waiting and planning but Im off to Coral Bay on friday. 2 4x4s, 2 boats and 7 mates all up. We are taking the boats in hope that the winds will be friendly and we can get out a couple of times or at worst fish the inside of the reef( not in the sancuary zones obviously). Ive done a heap of search's on here finding out all I can about using the south passage. What I was trying to find out especially from people who have done it a few times is, whats the maximum swell height you would use the passage in?

Any other Coral Bay tips would also be appreciated as it my first time up there.

Went to In a loo fish shop yesterday. They had Black Bream, alot of them around 25-35cm. This i did not have an issue with. What i did have an issue with was the Bream sitting in the middle on the ice. It was around 3kg or more and 60-65cm. It was so big and old looking it didnt look like a Bream. Its width was around 4 inches. Why? Frigin why? the things is probably 30-40 years old or more. It is gonna taste like crap. Put it back. Why does some dickhead feel it has to go to a fish shop. I cant stand all these people that take all these huge fish and yes Jewfish, Pinkys, Baldchin all those. Fish in W.A are on such low numbers its un real.

The ones that look like your grandparents on your wifes side. Why take them. There the breeders. Take the younger healthy fish that are of a decent size. Not the Pinky with the ball like a baseball sticking out of its head so you can take a picture and show it to ya mates, only to then eat it, and find the 40cm Pinky you had the week before was way better and you have just wasted it. Take your picture and put the thing back. Take the middle size ones. And take your limit and im sure most of you take your limit all the guys here seem fantastic. Im talking about the ones that arnt!

Thats my rant. If it gets me into trouble i dont care. Im passionate about the state of W.As fish stocks and so on.

Freshly caught today, battered and cooked tonight.  Lovely!  26 nice sized whiting caught off Hillarys and Scarborough.  Bit windy, bit wet!  But a great day on the water.

Just wondering if someone could help. We tried doing a bit of fishing off the beach at Legde point a couple of weekends ago. We are heading up to lancelin this weekend coming. There was HUGE amount of weed along the coast line and it was pointless. Are there any Lancelin locals who could help and tell me if the weed is still there or if there are any areas that aren't affected?

Went out targetting some shallow water sambos this morning and somehow managed a solid dhu that hit the jig on the bottom before I could even start my retrieve and a just size snapper that smashed a fast jig 20m off the bottom. (Both released of course) Couldn't even get any sambos onboard with only one boatside and a few lost after short hook ups. Only spent an hour out before coming in for a squid and a few KGs in the sound.

Need a rod transported to karratha and was hoping someone might be heading up that way that might be able to take it to its new owner, thought i would put it out there b4 arranging a quote for shipping, as i know its not cheap , even though the new owner is paying  still nice to not have to hand over alot of $$ to a courier company.

I'm updating all my old gear and need to replace the old land-based rods from AGES ago with ones suitable for the boat : Jigging / Bottom Bouncing, Trolling.

I've got a fair few of old reels, but the only 2 decent ones that will make it onto the boat - both nice Shimano Stradics that are basically new.

I've just added 2 new reels, so the collection so far is

* Shimano Saragosa 18000F  (on it's way)

* Daiwa Saltist LD30 (2-speed O/Head)

* Shimano Stradic 4000 (with spare spool)

* Shimano Stradic 2000 (with spare spool)

I'm wanting to cover Sambo's, Demersals, KG's, Squidding - plus possibly some trolling for fun stuff.

Obviously the Stradics will be targeting the lighter end - so was thinking the 4000 could go on a rod for Lighter Jigging plus a lighter spool for KG, flathead etc and the 2000 could be set up for squid ??

Both have spare spools, so could be rigged differently if required.

Any & all suggestions will be appreciated.

eg "Saragosa spooled with PE6-8 on a XXXX Rod for XXXX Fish / Jigging"

A shitload has changed since the last time I fished from a boat pulling up monster Dhuies with my grandfather back in the late 70's / early 80's in Geographe Bay

on hand-lines, old Alvey boat reels and boat rods that resembled broome sticks !

- so I'm WAY out of touch with modern gear.

I'd like to get some decent gear, without going overboard 1st up.

Budgets ?

Was thinking $200-300 for the Saragosa & Saltist

And maybe $125-200 for the Stradics.

If there's any suggestions for another Rod/Reel combo to add to the "arsenal" that would be better suited to the bigger target fish, that would be great too.

hi guys

took my 2 boys out today for some squiding in the sound, not much around with only one big squid caught by blake.

weather was pretty average to say the least, but they wanted to hit the bank, anchor up and burly hard for some sambo action hopefully.

well... within anchoring and burlying for 10 mins a nice 1.5-2mtr mako come and said hello and even give the boat a nudge!!!

so on goes a live bait and it didnt take long for him to grab it, after a short fight he managed a jump or 2 and the boys were pumped, meanwhile i was setting the underwater camera up for a look (although i wasnt to keen in sticking my hands in the water, were is pole cam when you need it...lol)

so we managed to get a short video of him along the side of the boat, bit shaky on the camera but it was also pretty rough out there.

got him to the boat and we were gunna gaff him , but at that moment he spat the fish out and took off never to be seen again.

other than that it was a very quiet day and only a ray, few skippy and shit fish caught, shitty weather and back home by lunch.

I hope someone can help a newbie here with baitcasters. Has anyone used baits ( herring, prawn, etc ) on a round baitcaster like a conquest 51 ? because i understand that baitcasters are usually used for casting lures .Just wondering if anyone has experience hooking baits instead of lures,  cast it out and wait.

Recently I have started tying the bimini twist to join leader to my braid. I am having a problem with the bimini loop catching on the first guide and snapping my lures off. The actual bimini and join to the leader ends up fine (after i untangle it from the guide), but the line snaps at the join to the lure (standard uni knot, 40lb leader to hawian snap or clip).

The problem is not with the join to the lure or the mainline/braid join. For some reason the bimini loop just catches the guides. My bimini twists seem pretty decent (have practised lots and they are nice and slim).

Does anyone else have this problem or have any solutions? It only seems to happen when belting out lures. I am trying to land them on Rottnest so maybe I should just back off a bit and not try to throw them so hard??

The obvious would be to shorten my leader so it doesnt go through the guides, but I really prefer having a nice long mono shock leader.

New to the site and have been loving reading all the great article, checking all the cool pics and vids.

I'm heading up to Gnaraloo in a week and was wondering if it is possible to fish off of the coast. I have heard there are fishing restrictions up there but can't seem to find any information on exactly where I can and cannot throw a line in. I haven't got access to a boat or kayak unfortunately but for previous fishing trip reports it sounds like there are plenty of fish I could catch off the beach if I am allowed.

Any help regarding restricted zones, rod/reel preferences, lures, plastics would be greatly appreciated.
