Fabricating ali baitboard?
Submitted by bigbadbustling on Sat, 2011-04-16 11:03Does anyone know of any places that could fabricate a custom aluminium bait board? I'm looking to get a basic ali board made up, with a bit of of a bait bucket, cutting surface, a few drainage holes, weld on a couple of rod holders and a coat of white paint to finish off. Pretty standard setup really.
Just hoping a few readers out there have had their own boards welded up and could recommend an ali fabricator, and maybe a rough idea of the cost?

Time frame for reel repairs from a reputable brand?
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Sat, 2011-04-16 09:38Just wondering what you guys consider to be a reasonable turn around time for a reel to be repaired from a reputable name, ie Daiwa? I was told they have a 250 reel queue at the moment (makes one wonder) and have been waiting 6 weeks for the repair. Is this fair and reasonable and is that about right or have you guys waited longer etc? First time I've sent something back and not sure what to expect time wise...

Sic Guides
Submitted by Cameron71 on Fri, 2011-04-15 22:15Hi All,
I have a 7' spin rod that could really do with some new single foot guides and I was thinking of getting some Sic Guides off eBay. Don't know much about them so was planning to just look for a power seller with good feedback and take a punt since they're so cheap. Thinking about non-fuji (Fuji unfortunately being the only guide brand I know).
Has anyone had any good or bad experience with non fuji eBay SiC Guides?
thanks

Submitted by Bloodshot on Fri, 2011-04-15 19:59Great Arvo with Rusty Lock. Only one Cray (1 night soak) but had a great squid session on the way home. Most of them were horses. Makes the size cray look like a marron.
Wish every friday was like this. Just with more Crays!

A Few Fish From Yesterday
Submitted by Seaquest on Fri, 2011-04-15 17:47With great looking winds forcast I decided to head out for a fish yesterday. The dhuys were on fire early with six fish caught in two drifts.
Mark managed a new PB dhuy of around 15kg and next drift caught one about the same size which took 2 release weights and 4 16oz sinkers to get him back top the bottom.
After a very short but great little session on the dhuys we headed out deep in the search for some nannies (yes I know they are actually red snapper but down here most people call them nannies, even the local fish shop).
Couldn't find too many nannies but the pink snapper were in plague proportions. Finially caught my first pinky on a jig one species that has eluded me on the metals. Ended up jigging 4 for the day.
Sorry about the shit photos into the sun but I was more concerned about getting the fish back in the drink.

Lemax's Salmon Slaying rods
Submitted by Ben Derecki on Fri, 2011-04-15 16:31If you're looking for a new rod in preparation for the salmon season there are a few great buys to be had from the Lemax fold. Here's a heads up on a couple of the best sellers:
The President Royal would be the most popular and best value Lemax rod for targeting salmon. Depending on whether you're using lures or lobbing baits and waiting for the fun to start the 9-12 ft rods (RRP $165-$235) are the ones you want to look at.
The rods have a split butt which is a bit longer for better casting, light enough to cast all day, rated for lures from 100g (rated slightly heavy IMO), Lemax custom SiC guides and graphite reel seat.
If you like fishing a bit lighter the 9ft Blue Mountain (RRP $210) is rated for lures to 60g and these rods have a lot of grunt built into them and they look pretty neat too.
The rods have a slightly shorter butt than the President Royal, are light enough to cast all day, Lemax custom SiC guides and graphite reel seat.
The 9-12ft Platinum rods come in spin or overhead models for those who prefer the variety. They're rated for lures from 60g up depending on the length.
RRP ranges between $185 and $230.
If you don't mind going a bit shorter there are some fantastic rods in the 8ft range - the Black Rose, Storm Legend and Red Sword are all tested and rated rods.
PM me if you want more details or visit the listed Lemax stockists.

STEEP POINT
Submitted by wooden fish on Fri, 2011-04-15 14:44Got back from Steep point Tuesday last week. What a trip! Weather perfect though hot at the start - about 38 in the water bucket when we got there. Towed my 5.25m Savage Osprey (115hp Johnson) in no worries. Species caught:
Spanish mackerel
Yellowfin Tuna
shak Mackerel
Pink snapper
Spangled Emperor
Blue line emperor
Baldchin groper
Coronation trout
Red throat emperor
Charlie courts
Bronze whalers
Gummy shark
Lemon shark (I think)
Spotted cod (Rankin?)
Long toms
Norwest Blowies
Catfish
Leatherjacket
Squid
And several more we had no idea about.
Had a whale shark come to the back of the boat and shortly after drifted to a disturbance on the surface which we thought was it again. Wrong! it was a bait ball with well over a hundred pinkies under it - I got a 71 cm one by winding up from the bottom through the column. One of the blokes thought he had hooked the worlds biggest mackerel while we were trolling but it turned "turtle". Luckily we were able to get it off the hooks and did not leave it dragging a lure. Saw plenty of Manta rays and huge sea snakes. Had a Tiger shark nearly as big as the boat hanging around when we were dumping frames in the channel.
All up a great trip - when Steep point is good it is FANTASTIC!
Sadly CALM seem to be trying to make it difficult for recreational fishermen to access the area with a reduction of campsites proposed and the remaining few to be moved inland away from your moored boat.. Hard to understand when Paul the Ranger manages it so well and 95% of visitors do the right thing. No restrictions on professionals that I can see though!
Ah well - Quobba in a couple of months..............
And thanks Lamby for the plotter/gps - worked perfect AND it has a few real good way points on it now!

Dunsborough Fishing Holiday for Easter House Rental
Submitted by Nachos on Fri, 2011-04-15 10:31Hey there, I have rented a house for Easter in Dunsborough for 21-26 April. I am currently going with only 3 other mates, the house and the rent is too big for the 3 of us, so we are looking for more people to come along and share the fun of our trip.
We are 3 guys 25-26 years old, mad keen fisherman who like to drink and have fun. We are mainly heading to Dunsborough to do alot of fishing as I am taking my boat down also, we will be doing other activities such as BBQ's, Winery tours, 4WDrivin, and other sight-seeing and fun stuff.
The house is a couple minutes drive from the town centre and right across the road from the beach. Costs and more info will obviously be discussed further, if interested, please contact me via mobile (0433 840 419) as I hardly use my e-mail.
Guys, Girls, singles or couples, we don't mind who comes aslong as you have a good attitude and fun personality. If you have been thinking of coming down to Dunsborough for a fishing trip but cant find accommodation and need a roof to sleep under and store ur goods while your out and about, then this is perfect for you.

Karratha/Point Sampson Fishing
Submitted by Asahambe on Thu, 2011-04-14 10:00G'day everyone,
Hope some of u have been around Point Sampson area fishing at some point. Is the area any good? What do they catch up here most of the time Barra? I'm still looking around for any
Fishing Charters in the area so will try and see what they say. This area looks good for fishing the colour of the water is awsome. I went walking on the beach 2 day's ago and saw big school
of bait fish around 20-30 meters in from the beach being pushed in a small circle and then 1,2,3 their flyng in the air somethin big twirling the water what a site to see it carried on for around
40min just as the tied pushed in. Any idea what it might be anyone? I think I'll bring the fishing tackle up or go buy some in Karratha this must be good fishing area.
Cheers

Which Reel
Submitted by roganjosh on Thu, 2011-04-14 08:51
Hi Everyone,
I need some advice on what reel to go for. I have a nice 6'3" jigging rod, but I need to match a reel to. Most of th fishing will be around Coral Bay / Exmouth chasing Spango's etc. These are the reel I cant decide between:
Daiwa Saltist
Shimano Saragosa
Shimano Twin Power
Daiwa Catalina ( bit more expensive )
Interested in knowing what others think or have used themselves.

Exmouth Trip & FW Comp
Submitted by MJ on Wed, 2011-04-13 21:38Back in Perth after 7 days in Exmouth that included the Fishwrecked Comp- got out for 5 days including one particularly memorable day out of Bundegi for a solo sailfish and marlin double plus another sail pulling the hook at the boat and a nice cobia in the ice box.
Have great memories of dropping good fish trolling live striped tuna out from Tantabiddy in the 150s - 500s (probably just as well!!) Met some some fantastic site members, anyone who may be considering heading to Exmouth for future Fishwrecked Comps dont hesitate - its not serious just a great opportunity to meet other like minded members and share stories and build knowledge (besides Twitchy or Lucky Tim will win all the prizes anyway!) Adam and crew put on a great event and the feast at the wind up was just brilliant (how good was that YF sashimi!)
Will post up some video of the trip by the weekend.

Mindarie Snapper/ Cant Read Sounder
Submitted by magpiejohn on Wed, 2011-04-13 20:58Just lost all my lures due to monster Mackerals last Tuesday. Met a guy whilst cleaning my boat and he had the biggest 2 snapper
I've ever seen and 1 massive tailer. I asked Blue Water Tackle guy to help me know what to look for on sounder (gave good advice)
but I think I'm to dumb to know what to look for. 20 metres deep 5 metre hump not a bite and berlyed up with mulies and grain. Could someone help me
as what to look for on sounder and what to do. Floated down a mulie no weight, am very frustrated.

Addicted to Mackeral/Trolling Advice Needed
Submitted by magpiejohn on Wed, 2011-04-13 20:20Hi All,
New to site and would love some advice on if I should use knots on wire leader crimped. I lost my new lures because leader was bit, being told that
bubbles occur in front of lure and therefore it gets bit there. Also have bought a cheap Jap crimper to find out it's only usefull for throwing in a tantrum.
Could someone help me with good advice knots or crimp plus if crimp what type of crimper. Am totally addicted to trolling now as I have my new King Craft Venom boat 19'
and can't get enough. Already thrown 1 sickie to get amongst it.
Hope to here from someone.
