What Lures to use on our upcoming fishing trip to Albany
Submitted by rooboy111 on Wed, 2010-02-03 16:50Hi
Was just wondering if anyone could recommend some lures to use on a upcoming fishing trip to Albany.
All the guys going have never really fished with lures, so I pretty much have no clue where to start, we are probably going to try trolling around Breaksea Island if that helps.
Would love any help.
Cheers Chris

NEW PERTH BOATING RULES
Submitted by Colin Hay on Wed, 2010-02-03 13:16Release date: 03/02/10
The growing popularity of the waters in the northern suburbs for recreational boating, personal water craft (PWC) use and other aquatic activities has prompted significant changes, including the introduction of a new ski area and new speed restrictions.
Department of Transport Manager Navigational Safety and Compliance Ray Buchholz said increased boating activity coupled with safety concerns had prompted a formal review of aquatic usage between Hillarys Boat Harbour and Quinns Beach.
"Congestion in some areas has seen conflict between users increase in recent years," Mr Buchholz said.
The changes to the gazetted areas for on-water activities, combined with improved education and increased compliance patrols, will ensure safer operation of the waters even at the busiest times," Mr Buchholz said.
"As part of the 12 month review undertaken by the Department, officers consulted extensively with the City of Joondalup, City of Wanneroo, Department of Environment and Conservation, Department of Fisheries, Water Police, Whitfords Sea Search Rescue, Surf Lifesaving WA, Boating WA and the Hillarys Yacht Club.”
The changes include:
a significant expansion of the existing Whitfords ski area;
the creation of a new ski area off Quinns Beach;
the creation of an eight knot speed restriction extending 200m offshore from the southern end of the Mindarie Marina breakwater to the northern end of Quinns Beach; and,
amendments to the existing eight knot speed restrictions areas at the entrance of Hillarys Boat Harbour and Ocean Beach Boat Harbour.
Mr Buchholz said 25 marker buoys defining the new zones had been installed at strategic points and new signage erected at adjacent boat ramps to assist skippers and other users comply with new gazettal areas.
"Transport has also updated its boating guide for the waters between Hillarys and Quinns Beach to clearly show the gazetted areas for boating, water skiing and PWC use and it is available free of charge," Mr Buchholz said.
People wanting a copy of the new Hillarys Boating Guide or more information about the changes can visit www.transport.wa.gov.au/imarine or contact the Department on 9431 1011.

Barramundi Season Begins in the Territory
Submitted by Colin Hay on Wed, 2010-02-03 11:5802 February 2010
Minister for Fisheries Kon Vatskalis has reminded anglers about the official opening of the 2010 barramundi season this week.
Mr Vatskalis also released concept plans today for the NT Government’s $4 million upgrades to the Palmerston Boat Ramp.
“Territorians love to fish, and the NT Government continues to expand and create opportunities for better recreational fishing in the Territory,” Mr Vatskalis said.
“This is why I was pleased to announce the purchase of the fourth commercial barramundi license last year, closing off commercial fishing in Bynoe Harbour and Finniss River.”
The commercial barramundi fishery operates from 1 February to 30 September each year. It is closed between October and February each year to help protect breeding stocks.
“Barramundi gather at the mouths of the Territory’s rivers for spawning before each wet season making them easy targets - the closure months ensure the fish are given the greatest chance to breed successfully,” Mr Vatskalis said.
Mr Vatskalis said the opening of the commercial season also coincides with the opening of sections of the Mary and Daly Rivers to recreational anglers.
Anglers are reminded that recreational fishing controls, including a possession limit of 5 barramundi (2 in the Mary River Fish Management Zone) and a minimum size limit of 55cm are in place to protect barramundi stocks and ensure a high quality fishery.
Mr Vatskalis added that the NT Government had just tendered for the $4 million Palmerston Boat Ramp upgrades – an NT Government election commitment.
“Late last year I called for the public to provide submissions on what upgrades they wanted, this tender reflects public input to the concept plans.”
Mr Vatskalis said construction will include a fishing jetty, security lighting, dual lane ramp with floating pontoon, secure car park section, disabled ramp for land access to boats and car park lighting.

Giant squid invade California
Submitted by bod on Tue, 2010-02-02 11:01Giant squid weighing up to 27 kilograms have swum into waters off Newport Beach and are being caught by sport fishermen by the hundreds.
The squid were noticed last week and fishermen started booking twilight fishing trips to catch the huge creatures.
400 of the creatures had been caught since Friday night.
The animals weigh between 10 and 20 kilos but a few fishermen have reeled in 27 kilo squid.
The Humboldt squid is also called the jumbo squid or jumbo flying squid and squirts ink to protect itself.
They can grow up to 45 kilos in weight and 2 metres long and follow food sources.
The squid have also recently been spotted off San Diego, Oregon and Washington, on the West Coast of the United States.
Orange County sports fishing businesses were celebrating the arrival of the squid during what is normally a fairly quiet time of the year.
But the giant squid is not unknown off the coast of America.
In September a record-breaking 5.7 metres long squid, weighing 46 kilos, was caught off the Gulf of Mexico.

Legal commercial fish size
Submitted by just dhu it on Tue, 2010-02-02 07:55
I was wondering if the commercial fishing guys are bound by the same legal fish sizes as we are, i was in the local shops on saturday and noticed the whole fresh fish which were labelled caught out of Broome , they had two Red emperor both around 300 mm, the rest 6 or 8 fish werent much bigger. i had heard from other sources that the commercial fisherman can have a percentage of their catch below size
i am not trying to start a slanging match for what people have seen but would like to know what the regulations are exactly for commercial ventures

Where to Camp down around Albany???
Submitted by Bungel on Mon, 2010-02-01 22:43Spent my last week off up at Sandy Cape, north of Jurien. Fishing was very average, though i didnt explore much at all wasnt able to do any decent missions.
... so this time im looking to head south for 3-5 days. Where ever i can get in about 8 hours of travel that is road friendly to a little Hyundai Excel ( 4WD is on my list of things to buy very soon). Camping with some nice beaches close by, and a few easy walk in spots for some rock fishing. Im keen to burley up a bit and bring a few in during the mornings/evening. Any information or ideas would be great, as i really know nothing about the area but am keen to explore a bit.. so i can head back there at some point for LBG fishing only.
Cheers, George.

ABC 7.30pm Sunday - Ningaloo Whale Sharks
Submitted by bod on Sun, 2010-01-31 19:20
Whale sharks may well be the biggest fish in the sea but very little is known about them. Whale Shark follows the whale sharks on a year-long journey to try to find out more.
The
whale shark is the largest fish in the world and yet it remains a
scientific mystery. For the majority of the year they make their way
slowly though the oceans relatively unnoticed. However, on the eve of a
spectacular coral spawning event on Australia’s Ningaloo Reef, hundreds
arrive. Six weeks later, they disappear. Where do they go?
New
findings suggest that whale sharks from Australia, Africa and India
could all come from the same migratory population - meaning that this
would be the largest migration on earth. But how can we find out for
sure?
Australian marine biologist Mark Meekan, tags eight
sharks in Ningaloo. Thanks to specially designed on-shark cameras, DNA
testing and satellite tracking devices, we can follow their dramatic
journey. Mark’s theory is that the sharks are driven on their massive
journey around the world by major food events, such as occurs in the
Ningaloo Reef.
To test his theory further, Mark moves to the
tropical island of the Seychelles, where marine biologist David Rowatt
has spent the last 10 years building up the world’s largest database on
the whale shark population. Using the latest photo-identification
software, they start to compare the distinctive spot and stripe
patterns of over 3000 whale sharks - a single match would prove Mark’s
theory, and be invaluable in helping to understand more about their way
of life.
The information could also be used to save them.
Commercial fishing of whale sharks has only recently been banned in
South East Asia, but not before a substantial diminution of their
numbers. According to research whale sharks are now on average 2m
shorter than they were a century ago, highlighting the damage caused by
human action.
