Deep and Meaningful - "The psychiatry of Fishing"
Submitted by Andy Mac on Fri, 2010-01-29 16:28I was having a chat with a mate recently and we were talking about just what it is that drives us to spend countless hours and endure inhospitable conditions all in the search of some elusive fish. The topic was interesting in that we both had different drivers for why we do what we do. On reflection there are probably a million reasons why we brave the elements, get up at ungodly hours, punish our bodies jigging bohemouths from the depths, spend small fortunes on every bit of bling imaginable and live like recluses from our own families at times by spending countless hours on fishing forums and other sources of fishing fodder in order to satisfy our fishing addictions.
So what is it deep down that makes you do the things you do (fishing related)?
Is it the thrill of the chase, the solitude, the comradary of fishing with mates, the excitement of a strong fight or something completely different?

underwater camera
Submitted by silly on Fri, 2010-01-29 16:21I've just started to get into scuba diving and want to take some photos so i can remember my dives/fish etc. (not really wanting to get into the whole photography scene just yet)
Currently i have a olympus 1030sw camera which is waterproof to 10m but Ive been diving up to 18m at the moment so i havent taken the camera with me. what are my options?? Is it possible to buy a housing for the camera which is say waterproof to 20m+ that isnt going to cost me more than my camera is worth?? Are there any other possibilities i could use??
cheers

Okuma HS30 Drag Issues
Submitted by sarcasm0 on Fri, 2010-01-29 11:02Gday Guys,
Over the long weekend down south, I learnt that the drag on my Okuma Hardstone 30 reel isnt working correctly. I think a double hookup on some skippy might have stuffed the drag. It has some drag, so it isnt like its in freespool, but there is no adjustment. Is this likely to be just a drag washer? I have never taken any reels apart, and am a bit worried about not being able to put all the finnicky little bits back together. Should I take it to a store and get them to service it?
I generally try to look after our reels, but they spend a bit of time in the bottom of the boats so they arent really aesthetically pleasing but I give them a rinse off after each trip.
Im hoping to be able to get this fixed and be able to fish this weekend, but If its knackered, I might splash out and get a new reel.

outboard repairs
Submitted by Shane O on Fri, 2010-01-29 10:30i brought my boat with a 55hp tohatsu, there was a little milky oil leaking from near the prop. took it to a boat repar shop, they tried to sting me $1000 maybe more in repairs.
after a bit of searching and a few phone calls have now got them only replacing the gearbox oil, i don't know alot about motors. i do know the motor had not been run for 12mths before i got it, i have used it twice and both times had just switched off and not let the fuel run dry. so maybe it could be a build up of feul and some water may have got in there?
so i am going for a second opinion, don't think there is that vmuch wrong with it.

busso
Submitted by fishing fanatic on Thu, 2010-01-28 23:16just got back form busso. sick place. stayed at the anglican campsite or something like that and went out for a fish everyday. got tonnes of squid but no kgs this time. while crabbing i was freediving for them and i saw tonnes of king george and lots of crabs. most of the crabs were female though. we ended up with 10 males are the end of each day. but so many undersized ones wasnt funny. one dive i got about 26 crabs with none being sized. also caught 2 fiddler rays and a monster shovel nose with my which i didnt expect. on the last night i had a big run with a ray and after taking about 200m of my spool i started getting line back and then my hook snapped in half. gamakatsu octopus 6/0. but all in all a very good holiday

Fishing Honeymoon
Submitted by Lamby on Thu, 2010-01-28 21:59Ok need advice on a good honeymoon destination and one where I can get amongst the fish! I played my reverse psych card well and offered to take her to Europe skiing which she rebuffed with wishes of tropical islands... bingo!
I am keen to get out on a few charters jigging for the likes of dogtooth etc. and will be planning around March next year. She is a reasonably keen fish-o herself so will probablt get amongst it for a bit, but will be happiest sipping cocktails on the beach. So I have to keep that in mind if I stand any chance putting some of that honey into moon
Cheers,
Lamby

Submitted by barneyboy on Thu, 2010-01-28 20:39Reading the local rag and they have had to postpone the annual competition until next Febuary. Some key organisers of the yearly event( usually held in Feb) have had to pull out due to unforsene circumstances. It is a bit of a shame as it is usually a great day out with some great prizes up for grabs. Maybee next year!!

Who thinks it's time for a new better burley?????
Submitted by dowie55 on Thu, 2010-01-28 19:30Hi
I love my fishing, but i am finding that the available burleys just aren't as good as they say they are. I have recognised that there is room for a new product and have got a good recipe, if you want to call it that.
Would people like to see it on the shelf?
And is anyone want to give it a go to test it when its made to test it????
Thankyou
Tom
p.s- please note the product hasnt yet been made and i am still working on it so it could be a while, just lookign to see if people agree with me.

National Longtail (Tuna) Survey
Submitted by till on Thu, 2010-01-28 18:23from http://www.csiro.au/news/Anglers-urged-to-share-tales-of-longtail-tuna.html
Anglers urged to share tales of longtail tuna
Reference: 10/06The information is being sought by a consortium of recreational fishing groups and scientists led by the CSIRO Wealth from Oceans Flagship. It will contribute to scientific assessments of the condition of the longtail tuna population.
Longtail tuna (often incorrectly called northern bluefin tuna) are commonly caught by anglers fishing in tropical and temperate coastal waters around Australia, and even from the shore.
In recognition of the species’ popularity among recreational anglers, longtail tuna was declared a ’recreational-only’ species by the federal government in December 2006. A small commercial bycatch of 70 tonnes a year is allowed for Australia’s Commonwealth fisheries.
“Longtail tuna may be susceptible to population decline even under seemingly modest fishing pressure given its very narrow coastal distribution,” Dr Shane Griffiths of CSIRO says.
“We recently discovered that the species is also slow-growing and lives for at least 18 years.
“Fortunately, longtail tuna have not been heavily fished in Australia, so we can put the right measures in place now to ensure the population remains healthy for future generations of recreational fishers to enjoy.”
The Chief Executive Officer of Australia’s recreational fishing peak body Recfish Australia, Len Olyott, says that while commercial fisheries are obliged to report their catches, recreational fishers are not required to report their catches of most fish species.
“Without knowing the recreational catch, scientists are unable to assess the condition of Australia’s longtail tuna population,” Mr Olyott says.
“We are sure that recreational fishers who have had the enjoyment of catching this magnificent species will realise the benefits of this project and will help scientists by recording details of their fishing expeditions.”
The website (www.longtailtuna.com.au) features an online logbook that allows recreational anglers to submit fishing trips anonymously. They can also register for free to use the site as a personal fishing diary to store and view details of their fishing trips. Registered users submitting catch data will enter a monthly draw for longtail tuna t-shirts.
The longtail tuna project is funded by CSIRO and the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation, Recfish Australia, the Australian Fishing Trade Association, Sunfish, the NSW Recreational Fishing Trust, Recfishing Research and the Australian National Sportfishing Association.
CSIRO initiated the National Research Flagships to provide science-based solutions to Australia’s major research challenges and opportunities. The 10 Flagships form multidisciplinary teams with industry and the research community.

The Ady Gil crew arrive in Fremantle tomorrow
Submitted by bod on Wed, 2010-01-27 19:07Sea Shepherd heading to Freo for repairs
AAP
January 27, 2010,
The Sea Shepherd
flagship Steve Irwin arrives in the west Australian port of Fremantle
on Thursday with the crew of the protest trimaran Ady Gil, which sank
after a collision with a ship from the Japanese whaling fleet in the
Southern Ocean.
The Ady Gil, originally known as Earthrace and
skippered by New Zealander Pete Bethune, had been part of the Sea
Shepherd group protesting at Japanese whaling.
It sank as it was being towed back to Australia after the collision.
The
Sea Shepherd Society said the Steve Irwin would undergo emergency
repairs to its helicopter and take on more fuel and provisions before
rejoining the battle action against the Japanese whalers.

boat trip
Submitted by Roger Knife on Wed, 2010-01-27 16:41hello again
Just a quick post to say we did manage to get out on sunday, and fish for the whiting and skate. I struggled and only caught a few small whiting and a strap conger eel. My brother in law had a great day boating blonde rays of 18, 20 and 21lb! A couple of other blonde ray were caught and some spurdog but on the whole it was a hard day...still it beats working and the weather was good. Take care one and all.
