fisheries at rotto
Submitted by tangles on Wed, 2011-12-21 15:47been over at rotto all day doing a charter and was chatting with the local fisheries officers over there! they have been busy, busted a cpl boats with undersize dhuis and over bag limits. Will these peanuts never learn! they were saying that unfortunately because of the hours they work most get away with it as they wait till dark to come back in with their catch but they were getting a few today! wont say how they were doing it but it is a very effective method and seems to be working so if any of you know of any guys that got nabbed today over here tell em to suck eggs cos thats wot you get for doing the wrong thing! Good to see they are trying their best with what they have to work with! and the note pad was filling up when we were there! so beware if you think you can get away with it cos you might just be suprised!

Navigation Planner?
Submitted by Mela_77 on Wed, 2011-12-21 13:23Hey guys,
Just wondering what everyone uses to backup and plan their trips/routes/waypoints .... etc
Do you spend some time on the boat the night before, with your plotter hooked up to the cradle, planning where you'll go? Do you run a PC/Mac program, and get it transferred to your Plotter? Or you just launch your boat, and head to your best spot?
Also how do you backup your waypoints, write them down manually ... etc? And last but certainly not least, how do you transfer your waypoints to a new unit that you just bought?
I know there where some topics posted before about this, and they go back to 2007, but just wanted to talk about the latest tech with this.
Options are NavPlanner (Navionics users only) .... $200+ for Oceania ... any feedback? http://www.navionics.com/MarineFeatures_NavPlanner.asp
What about C-Map? Any good? ...$230 (https://www.whitworths.com.au/main_itemdetail.asp?cat=114&item=45981&intAbsolutePage=1)
Do anyone run an Apple App (Navionics Aust/NZ) to plan their trip at home, on similar chart of what you've got on your boat?.... for $46!!!
I guess discussing this will help most of us, defiantly me, when it comes to reliability, safety and efficiency of rec fishing ...
Cheers

Sad news in F&B magazine is no more! :-(
Submitted by Tony Halliday on Wed, 2011-12-21 13:16 sad news to all project boat builders!
http://www.marinebusiness.com.au/news/fandb-publisher-sea-media-in-liquidation
was by far the best and most unbiased of the magazines in the marine trade.
They always called a spade a spade and called it as they saw it.
Sad to see Peter, Ruth and their crew go under.
RIP F&B

Shakespeare Slingshot
Submitted by sambo24 on Tue, 2011-12-20 22:05Hey ya'll.
Impulse-purchased a shakespeare slingshot rod (2-4kg) the other day. It was super cheap for what it appears to be.
So far I'm stoked with it as a bream rod, and I took it out to GI today to give it a bit of grief. Teamed with an old sienna 2500 it worked well on the KG's and skippy.
Anybody else heard of/know of/use one of these rods? Interested to hear your thoughts guys.
Cheers,
Sam.

Launching a 7m boat at Broome need advice
Submitted by ryangler on Tue, 2011-12-20 20:38Hi guys
Heading to Broome on Friday and all i seem to read on the net today is how bad the ramp facilities are and how tourists and even locals have trouble launching there boats. With some real horror storries.
Was after advice from people who ave used the facilities... its a 7m Assassin and dont laugh but it will actually be only the 5th time ive launched it, or any boat. Maybe some tips in general would be good.
so far ive got
- tides, tides, tides is the key, launch on incoming (quickly) & retrieve on out going so i have time up my sleeve
- be very organised
- carry a snatch strap
what else
Thanks guys

Filleting at sea
Submitted by Cjsurf on Tue, 2011-12-20 18:59Here's one for the debate, I was talking to a mate who saw a boat filleting fish and stowing away before returning to marina... It's illegal yes but whats the deal with filleting/cooking on board. And especially people who do this tend to throw the remains overboard which is semi wasteful anyone know of the punishment as we all know fisheries have more power than the 5-0

Positive experience with FishWatch
Submitted by Ben Derecki on Tue, 2011-12-20 11:05I called FishWatch on the way home from work last night after noticing something going on in the Canning that I thought was a bit suss. They took my details and said they would get someone to look into it.
Later that night I got a call back from one of the officers who wanted to clarify the details and explained that the situation was fine, what was happening was known to the Fisheries Officers and that it was legal. We had a chat for a while and he clarified what the regs said etc.
I then got another call from FishWatch this morning just checking to see if my call had been followed up on to which I replied that it had.
I thought it was pretty cool to see that the phone call didn't just disappear into the ether leaving me wondering if anything ever happened.
My one complaint was that I didn't have the number entered into my phone (do it now if you haven't got it either - 1800 815 507) and it was difficult to find it on the Fisheries website (mobile) as it's quite hidden on the Contact Us page. It wouldn't take much to put a FishWatch banner on the homepage or even drop it into one of the top or bottom menus.
Anyway just wanted to put it out there that I was impressed with the level of service.

Get Well Benno208
Submitted by TheBradyBunch on Mon, 2011-12-19 21:10Hey there Guys an Girls
Just thought that some of you might like to know that a fellow fishwrecked member is currently in an induced coma in ICU at royal peth hospital after a car accident on saturday night. He was hell stoked that he caught his first dhuie an first queenie out the back of rotto with one sick skipper that shouldn't have gone out at all (me). All i can say is good on him i was glad to hear he had such a good timeout on the water an i couldn't have wished for such a good trip for such a nice guy.
So from me an my family i hope you pull through soon mate so we can go an catch some more fish. Our wishes for a speedy recovery to you an your family.
GET WELL BENNO

HDS7 Problem with Sounder
Submitted by Mela_77 on Mon, 2011-12-19 18:18My hds7 (combo) sounder function didn't work for some reason. It's just reading 0.8m (water depth), and bla bla sounding! I've tried everything while we're in the water, reboot, disconnect and reconnect cables, even made sure that the trance ducker is correctly positioned .... Luckily I had my backup Furuno, to finish our session.
Anyone faced this problem with any hds unit before? It's still not working, and haven't checked the cable running from traced ulcer to display yet, just trying to get ideas before starting hardware work on it.
Any help would be appreciated
Cheers

HDS Deepish water performance
Submitted by Cruise Control on Mon, 2011-12-19 17:52The bro-in-law went out behind Rotto today to try out the new electric reels. He was very keen to also test the performance of his HDS7 with the standard transducer. I've uploaded an image that he MMS'd to me from Rotto of 282m with a solid bottom echo showing features that i can only assume to be Coral or other such growth. He hit 400m+ and reckons the picture was as clear as this without noise. Not too bad a performance with a bog standard tranny and straight out of the box. Sure surprised me.
By the way, he managed a couple of smallish Red Snapper but he was as pleased as punch with the HDS.

Grass on boats
Submitted by Joodles on Mon, 2011-12-19 17:50Ha, probably caught half of you out with that subject line but really just wondering if any of you blokes have artificial turf instead of carpet on the deck of your boat and if so can you offer the pros n cons of doing so.
Thanks
