Replacing trebles with a single hook - looking for hook suggestions
Submitted by Colin Hay on Thu, 2010-08-12 07:59After having several tailor throw my Richter plug recently, I am going to replace all the trebles with a single hook set-up.
Can anyone suggest a preference for the hooks I should replace them with, or a different hook set-up?
Will taking the trebles off effect the balance of the lure?
Many thanks,
Colin Hay

Gnaraloo
Submitted by sea-kem on Wed, 2010-08-11 19:35Heading to Gnaraloo Friday and hopefully fishing sunday. Have just checked Seabreeze and the swell forecast for Friday is 5.6m WTF. That would have to be the biggest swell I've seen on there it tops out at 6m. I spoke to a guy who fished in a 4m swell and reckons he swallowed his heart everytime the boat went into the trough. Just wondering what the the are the worst seas anyone has fished in? I know even a 3m swell can be a hairy proposition....

Exmouth fishing in January
Submitted by jus on Wed, 2010-08-11 15:30Hey guys,
A couple of us were thinking of planning a fishing trip next jan to exmouth...i havent really been able to find much on what the fishing is like up there at that time of the year so i was wondering if any of the resident exmouth experts would be able to help us out!
As far as i'm aware the weather will be fairly hit+miss with glassed off days and pretty windy days, but what fish can we hope/expect to target in January? We'd love to try a bit of everything - trolling, bottom fishing, landbased, and popping...ideally we'd love to get some big macks, bottom fish, sharks, GT's and Sailfish - we dont ask for much!
We were thinking of trying around the Murion Islands either with a charter or with a hire boat...would that be the way to go?
Any help/advice would be much appreciated!
Cheers,
Justin

Poppers versus Richter Plugs
Submitted by soupster51 on Wed, 2010-08-11 06:07Just trying to gather some information. What are your thoughts on using poppers and richter plugs? When do you switch from one to another? Have you found certain conditions suit one over the other? Do certain species prefer one over the other?

Deep Cave Diving
Submitted by bod on Wed, 2010-08-11 00:05
These spectacular images are a testament to the cave-diving expertise and sheer fearlessness of diver Martyn Farr.
Martyn is the UK's premier cave diving instructor and photographer.
One of Martyn's diving companions, Robbie Schmittner, in a huge flooded cave in Mexico.
In an incredible new feat Martyn will join an international team next month for a jaw-dropping world record attempt - the longest ever cave penetration.
Martyn plans to record on camera the progress of a team made up of some world's most renowned cave divers as they attempt to delve further into the Pozo Azul cave, near Burgos, Spain, than anyone has ever been before.
Divers carry remote underwater flash guns to illuminate this image, taken in what is probably the world's biggest underwater tunnel, Weebubbie Cave beneath the remote Nullarbor Plain of western Australia.
Dicing with death every day, 59 year-old Martyn throws himself into some of the most extreme conditions on the planet and plunges into uncharted icy cold water, underground, underwater and ALONE.
A death-defying career in the sport spanning nearly 40 years has taken him to every corner of the globe and seen him shattering record after record along the way.
Divers often use guide-lines to keep them on track in the murky depths. Getting lost can be fatal.
Martyn began cave diving in 1971 and by 1981 had established a world record for underwater cave penetration in the Bahamas.
He is widely admired within the cave diving community for his exploration in Wookey Hole - 1977 and 1982 - and the first traverse of Llangattock Mountain in Wales in 1986.
Deep and dark doesn't always mean cold: Jenny Pinder swims through the underwater passages of the Grotta Giusti Cave in Tuscany, Italy. where geothermal activity heats the water to an amazing 35 degrees centigrade
Martyn has explored caves all over the world, in Iran, Mexico, Borneo, China, Japan, Spain, Greece, Turkey, Brazil, Australia and most recently Russia.
In another of Martyn's photos Helen Rider swims through the narrow confines of Taina Cave near Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic.

Live Bait Esky
Submitted by Lamby on Tue, 2010-08-10 21:49Chasing any members experiences with converting an esky into a live bait well, I am aware of some kits available to do this but pros and cons are always helpful. Just looking to add a different dimension every now and again so not keen on plumbing one into the boat hence the portable option of an esky appeals.
Cheers in advance,

GT Popping Rods
Submitted by DazSamFishing on Tue, 2010-08-10 21:05It's time for a new rod. I'm now GT popping rodless.
Any recommendations?
It needs to be able to work poppers from 125g up to 180g, although, majority of poppers I'll be casting will be in the 125 to 150g range. It also needs stick bait abilities. Most stick baits I'll be working will range from 150-180g.
It needs to run minimum PE8 - coupled to 18000/20000 stella.
The rod will be used boat based but I'd prefer to have a rod closer to 8 foot in length.
So far I'm leaning towards the Hots Gipang 79XH.
Appreciate some suggestions.

Kimberley - travelling light best five lures
Submitted by sunshine on Tue, 2010-08-10 15:42Hey guys - am about to embark on a trip around the Kimberleys in a boat but am limited (greatly) to the weight of baggage to a measily 10kg ............there is reasonable gear on the boat but what are the FIVE (or six or seven 'cos they are light) best lures you would carry with you to target barra and jacks in some of the remote creeks around the archipeligo.
Preferably hard bodies as soft plastics require the lead heads which quickly add up weight wise
Any help would be much appreciated

Auxiallary Motors
Submitted by aaasnapper on Mon, 2010-08-09 08:39I have noticed over the past few years, auxiallary motors on boats are pretty much non existent.
I only have a tiny, so we carry oars as our auxiallary. However, on upgrading to a larger vessel an auxiallary will be on the list.
I am just making the comment as each time we head out of Point Peron the Sea Rescue boat seems to always rescue someone with motor issues.

One step forward two steps back for Geograph bay.
Submitted by Seaquest on Mon, 2010-08-09 08:18Heard that a scallop trawler has been allowed back into the bay and is also allowed to trawl for whiting. After a win with the seine net fishing it seem a backwards step to allow a trawler to start back up again. Anyone that has dived the four mile in the bay would have seen the destruction these guys did in the past. Areas that would of once been large areas of coral gardens are now just flattened out bits of rubble. I am no expert on the matter but to me and a lot of the locals I have talked to can't believe this would be allowed to happen again.

Flounder
Submitted by JR JetSki on Sun, 2010-08-08 19:33Who of you guys go out to catch these fish, I caught one of the Rockingham jetty last night. It was 30 cm fish. We took it home cleaned it, stuck it in a pan and baked it with lemon butter and worcester sauce. Must admit, it was pretty tasty, very much like sole, was a bit bony on the edges though.

Ciguatera Disease
Submitted by JR JetSki on Sun, 2010-08-08 17:48Hi, I read a post containing this word (Ciguatera) and thought I would google it. Fasinating stuff, wonder if I have this desease lying dormand as I have eaten some of the spesies mentioned below. Never got sick though. I guess the fish I ate did not have the disease. What amzes me is that there are so many common species that could potentially have the disease. Any of you guys caught it before? Wondering how bad it realy feels when you get it? Below is a Quote of the web page and here is the link, http://www.holistichealthtopics.com/HMG/ciguatera.html#Ciguatera%20-%20General%20Description%20and%20Incidence
Spanish mackerel
Dog tooth tuna
Skipjack tuna
Pacific kingfish
Barracuda
Trigger fish
Jacks
Snapper(Lutjanidae)
Various species of cod or groper
Sea bass
Barramundi
Reef shark
Moray eel
Coral trout
Dolphin fish
Trevally
Sea perch
Parrotfish
Surgeon fish
Yellowtail
Mullet
Pigeye shark
Of these fish, large carnivorous reef inhabiting fish such as the barracuda are generally considered the most toxic species ( 2, 9, 11,18, 26 ) although pelagic fish like the Spanish mackerel seem to cause the most outbreaks of ciguatera ( 18 ) Some fish, such as red bass ( bohar snapper ) and paddletail, may be banned from sale in some localities

New Rod rack
Submitted by Dale on Sun, 2010-08-08 16:22Well with the wife and daughter away in Melbourne for a few days I decided to get stuck into a project down in the shed I've been putting off for a while, actually went down and started it at 3/4 time of the Freo game yesterday as that was not worth watching. Anyway, time to knock up a new rod rack as the old one was falling over. A couple of 1.8x90mm x 19mm lengths of that durian timber for the top section and a 1.8m x 70x70 length of dressed pine for the base from Bunnings. Lined the top recess sections with a felt strip also from Bunnings. Drilled out the holes in the base for the rod butts with a 38mm spade bit. The tight section in the recess area where the rod sits in the top section was drilled out with a 20mm spade bit first and the rest was cut away with a jig saw. A coat of flat black paint and space cleared against a wall and we were all done.
Cheers
Dale
