Garmin FF90

Hi,

i am considering buying a Garmin FF90, i realise this is a entry level fish finder. But i just want something that will show the layout of the bottom, and i have only had another Garmin for a 13ft tinny.

i now have a 4.5 mtre half cabin and only go to coventry reef, will this be enough to help me find lumps ect.

Ghost cotton

Just want to know what peoples thoughts are on ghost cotton, ive only just recently started using it, seems great for fillets and mulies, but still questioning myself about it any feedback would be great..!

If this doesn't make your blood boil, nothing will!!

This report by the ANU Centre for Climate Law and Policy (CCLP) outlines exactly what the enviro academics in Canberra are proposing.

For the future of fishing in all forms in much of Australia, this is seriously scary stuff and the title alone, "The Displaced Activities Analysis" has enough clues to tell you that at best, Australian fishers are academically perceived as, collateral damage: http://www.environment.gov.au/coasts/mb ... alysis.pdf

In a nutshell our appointed National Professors of environmental law want: - CLOSURE of or SEVERELY RESTRICTED fishing access to 56% of our coastal waters. - NO COMPENSATION to employees of commercial fishing operations or land based marine industries. Workers who lose jobs as a consequence of the closures can go on the dole - or seek unpaid re-training in some other field! - NO automatic compensation for businesses sent bust by the closures.

Squidding/fishing the South Mole?

Gday All,

On friday after tafe, a few people from my class and I had a crack squidding from the South Mole.  After about an hour we all gave it away as there didnt seem to be much going.  I tryed about 2/3rds of the way down on the south side, the tip north and south and back at the beginning of the mole on the north side near the jetty structure next to the maritime museum.

Was I just on the wrong day? The water clarity was there, it was overcast and every now and then some light rain fell.

Where is a good spot on the mole if any? Or should I just go for herring and gardies, maybe take a big rod and send out some live baits or mulies?

I remember the FWA website saying that south mole is the north moles poorer cousin, is this truly the way?

Busselton and Bunbury meetings on demersal catch allocations

Busselton, Royal Palms Hotel, 2 Albert Street Busselton.     6.30 - 8.30pm Wednesday 4th August 2010
Bunbury, Sanctuary Golf Club, Lot 100 Old Coast Road Pelican Point Bunbury.  6.30 - 8.30pm Thursday 5th August 2010

South West recreational fishers will have a chance to be briefed and provide feedback, on catch share allocations for West Coast demersal scalefish, at meetings next week.

WA’s West Coast Bioregion extends from north of Kalbarri to east of Augusta and there are about 200 species, including some of the State’s most iconic finfish, which are subject to a range of management rules to ensure sustainability of the stocks.

The Integrated Fisheries Allocation Advisory Committee (IFAAC) has been given the task of developing recommendations on sharing these valuable community resources.

The first South West public meeting will be held at the Royal Palms Hotel, 2 Albert Street Busselton, from 6.30pm to 8.30pm next Wednesday (4 August 2010).

A second meeting will be held at the Sanctuary Golf Club, Lot 100 Old Coast Road Pelican Point Bunbury, from 6.30pm to 8.30pm on Thursday (5 August 2010).

The issues are complex and interested parties are urged to attend the meetings, which are facilitated by Rechfishwest. There will be time for questions to be answered.

Meetings have already been held in other major centres of the West Coast Bioregion to discuss how IFAAC has proposed to allocate species, such as dhufish, pink snapper and baldchin groper, between the commercial and recreational fishing sectors.

Recreational fishers have taken part in meetings in the Mid-West, the Metropolitan area and Mandurah and they have helped in providing useful feedback to the independent advisory committee on its draft allocation report.

IFAAC has proposed two-thirds of the resource be allocated to the commercial sector and one third to recreational fishers. There are additional recommendations to ensure the dhufish take does not increase beyond historical proportions for the sectors. The committee is seeking feedback on its draft recommendations and inviting interested parties to submit their formal responses by 30 September 2010.

The WA Fishing Industry Council is conducting separate meetings for the commercial sector, to seek their input on the proposed allocation.

Copies of the consultation paper (Integrated Fisheries Management Draft Allocation Report – West Coast Demersal Scalefish – FMP 237) will be available at the meeting, or it can be downloaded from Fisheries’ website at www.fish.wa.gov.au. Look for the Integrated Fisheries Management tab on the home page menu.

Fishing Hopetown

Just wondering if anyone has done much fishing down that way, and knows if any good accommodation?

Considering a couple options of heading down there, 1 being in a month or 2 when the weather fines up a bit for 4 or 5 days with the boat, the other is next year in March for a couple weeks.

Has anyone had much experience down that way? is there a decent ramp to be used? Fishing wise, good fishing? limited info i have says yep pretty good fishing.

Any info would be appreciated

Cheers

Bodie

Snippets from the Greens Policy Launch

Snippets from their launch in the Sun Herald

THE Australian Greens, the party almost certain to hold the deciding vote in Federal Parliament next year, have vowed to turn one third of Australia's territorial waters into marine park where fishing would be banned.

The policy will be one of the central planks of the Greens campaign launch in Canberra, which will also feature a call to end native forest logging in Australia in a bid to ignite a forestry debate in the federal election.

In an exclusive interview, Greens leader Bob Brown, 65, denied he was retiring and vowed to stay in politics while his party had the balance of power in the Senate.
"It's not coming for a long time," Senator Brown said.
He said middle and rural Australia were ready to support the Greens.
"We've been around a long time and I come from a bush background. I understand where these folk are coming from," he said.
"Above all, they want to know their children are going to have a safe country to live in.

"The Greens more than either of the other parties offer that."  The marine park policy would turn a minimum of 30 per cent of Australian waters into reserves with no fishing and no exploration or drilling for oil or gas."
Australia needs a much greater area of our precious oceans protected through marine reserves," Senator Brown said.  "Currently in Australia less than 5 per cent of our ocean waters are protected in marine reserves.  "The Greens will also push for a high-speed rail link between Sydney and Melbourne, releasing a Galaxy poll today showing that three in four Australians support the idea.
The Greens industrial relations policy will focus on giving carers the right to request flexible working hours under Fair Work Australia.  Senator Brown said the Green agenda to move to renewable energy, protect coastlines and tax the mining industry would be of benefit to all Australians.  He said the party would work co-operatively with whoever won the federal election and he had met both Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott prior to the campaign to tell them that.
One thing the Greens rejected last time around was Labor's emissions trading scheme.
Senator Brown was scathing about the lack of talent in Ms Gillard's Cabinet on climate change ."There's more nous about climate change in the average primary school in this country than there is in the Cabinet," he said.

Advice needed on Gear Ratios for Popping/ Jigging

gday all,

I'm going to buy a top end large Spinner in the next few weeks, but I would like to get some use out it up north as well as local fishing.   We plan on popping for GTs at the Montes and other north trips, but I don't want to be limited to just that.  I would like to use it for jigging as well.

Would it be better to go for a lower gear ratio and thus a slower retreive so you can have the cranking power to Jig and haul up big brutes from the deep, and then if you want to pop then you just have to work harder to get the action on the lure.

It was my understanding that most of the crew that pop all the time have a reels with high ratios, then use another reel to do other types of fishing.  Is there a good happy medium, to get as much use out of one reel as you can.

Any advice or personal preferences would be great.

Jared

Where to catch Herring and Garfish around Garden Island?

Just wondering where the top spot to catch herring and gardies around Garden Island is as I need to stock up on free bait??

Also what is the best technique for catching these fish as I've only ever targetted them once and that was from Busselton jetty.

I'm sick of mullies just falling apart and off my hooks so I figured getting fresh bait before I head out is the way to go. It's ashame no one has set up a business selling fresh bait from a pontoon like they do in the States.

Ps. Any good spots for catching slimey mackeral?
