Epic Landbased Jigging Report!

Got a text yesterday arvo from a mate who wanted to get out for a night fish after dinner so got my heavy jig gear together and we hit up some epic landbased jigging at a secret metro hot spot.

Heres the catch and the jig that did the damage.

:) Man those gardies go hard on PE20!

We actually fished some live herring out for 3 hours without a touch but atleast managed a few tastey gardies for my lunch today! Mmmm they were good. Does anyone else actually fillet them?

Tedious work but can't go past some nice crispy gardie strips!

Question- Bream/Blowie related

I have been fishing Garrett Road bridge for the past 5 months
Getting Black Bream consistently most trips with 0 blowies

This weekend there has been a huge influx of Blowies ( for teh first time ever)
This means all i caught was blowies as they kept beating the bream to the bait

Why are blowies moving up stream?
Shouldnt they be pushed downstream with these rains as i presume they cant survive in freshwater???

Also are there any good downstream spots were there are bream     but the blowies are less prolific?/

Also one old guy at a tackle shop told me to try further upstream (of ascot) - - is he right should i go upstream, because i though tthe bream should also move downstream.

Thanks

Fremantle and Mandurah meetings on catch allocations

Date: Sunday, 25 July 2010

Recreational fishers from the Metropolitan area will have the opportunity to be briefed and provide feedback, on the allocation of catch shares for West Coast demersal scalefish, at meetings this week.

Meetings will be held in Fremantle and Mandurah to discuss how it is proposed to allocate species, such as dhufish, pink snapper and baldchin groper, between the commercial and recreational fishing sectors.

The Integrated Fisheries Allocation Advisory Committee (IFAAC) has been given the task of developing recommendations on sharing these valuable community resources.

Recfishwest is facilitating the IFAAC’s meeting for recreational fishers.

The Fremantle meeting will be held at the Fremantle Sailing Club, Marine Terrace, Fremantle, from 6.30pm to 8.30pm on Wednesday (28 July 2010).

Mandurah’s meeting will be held at RAAFA Estate Meadow Springs, 41 Portrush Parade, Meadow Springs from 6.30pm to 8.30pm on Thursday (29 July 2010).

The issues are complex and all interested parties are urged to attend and there will be plenty of time for questions to be answered.

IFAAC has proposed two-thirds of the resource be allocated to the commercial sector and one third to recreational fishers. There are additional recommendations to ensure the dhufish take does not increase beyond historical proportions for the sectors.

The independent advisory committee is seeking feedback on its draft recommendations and inviting interested parties to submit their formal responses by 30 September 2010.

West Coast demersal scalefish covers about 200 species, including some of WA’s most iconic finfish, which are subject to a range of management rules to ensure sustainability of the stocks.

The WA Fishing Industry Council is conducting separate meetings for the commercial sector, to seek their input on the proposed allocation.

Copies of the consultation paper (Integrated Fisheries Management Draft Allocation Report – West Coast Demersal Scalefish) will be available at the meeting, or it can be downloaded from the Department of Fisheries’ website at www.fish.wa.gov.au. Look for the Integrated Fisheries Management tab on the home page menu.

A list of all the public meetings is also available online.

lowrance structure/side scan hds10/8

just wondering if anybody have/used/seen the side scan in action out wide.

i have been told it is only good for lakes and rivers that dont have waves and swell, because this effects the way it reads.

i have just purchased/installed the hds10 with 600w tranny and was impressed with the side scan feature you see on you tube, which can be added later.

somebody in the west must be using this already.

any feedback  appreciated

Advice on PFDs please

Hi all Im after a bit of info on PFDs if anyone can help

living in Carnarvon I spend a lot of time on the quobba rocks (hence the nickname i guess) and have decided to do the right n safe thing and get myself a lifejacket to wear when im on some of the lower ledges, just incase the worse happens and i end up in the drink...

I dont mind paying whatever for one, but am a bit picky as to what it must be like:

-must be self (auto) inflating, ie: if i was to bash my head and go unconsious it would inflate by itself and give me half a chance.

-must be light and not too cumbersome- some of the ledges are a pain in the a** to climb to during the summer in even the lightest clothing.

anyone have one they could recommend or know of one that fits the above description? Id found some on the net a while ago when I was looking at them, but buggered if I can find the website again.

Thanks in advance for any help/ advice anyone can give!

Southern Right Whale leaps on yacht deck

A couple out on a quiet boating trip off the coast of South Africa got the shock of their lives when they were suddenly joined on deck by a 40-ton southern right whale.

Yacht skipper Ralph Mothes is seen in this amazing photograph dwarfed by the whale as it breaches right next to his yacht Intrepid.  A split-second after the picture was taken the 30ft-long whale slammed into the deck, snapping the steel mast like a twig and crushing the coach roof and side rigging. A tourist from Botswana who was aboard a nearby sightseeing boat captured the before and after shot.

Southern rights, an endangered species, can grow up to 50ft long and weigh 60 tons, so this one was probably a youngster.

Whale vs yacht

A 30ft southern right whale towers over Ralph Mothes a split second before slamming into the deck of the Intrepid training yacht. This amazing shot was captured from a nearby sightseeing vessel in at Hermanus, 80 miles east of Cape Town, South Africa

Mr Mothes and Paloma Werner took cover as the whale thrashed about on deck before slipping back into the water.  Today the pair were thankful that they were aboard a steel-hulled training yacht, which didn't suffer any structural damage. A fibreglass vessel would have been destroyed.

We'd spotted the whale about 100 metres away and thought that was the end of it. Then suddenly it was right up beside us.  I assumed it would go underneath the boat but instead it sprang out of the sea. We were very lucky to get through it, as the sheer weight of the thing was huge."

'There were bits of skin and blubber left behind, and the mast was wrecked. It brought down the rigging too.

Whale vs yacht

After thrashing about on deck, the whale slipped back into the water and left the scene of the collision. Mr Mothes and Paloma Werner were left with a broken mast and trashed yacht. They managed to make it back to the marina

The shaken couple, who are experienced seafarers with the Cape Town Sailing Academy, used their engine to get back to shore in Table Bay.

There were reports that the whale had been harassed by pleasure craft before it leapt onto the Intrepid. An inflatable craft had been seen driving close to the animal moments before the incident.  But experts say the young whale was more likely inexperienced with human contact and didn't know the yacht, which had its engine turned off, was there.  Meredith Thornton, scientist and manager of the Cape Town Mammal Research Institute at the University of Pretoria, said: 'Whales don't see much by way of their eyes but by sound in the water.'

Whales are a common sight in the Atlantic Ocean off the Western Cape coast at this time of year as they come near the shore to breed.  Thousands of tourists flock to the region's seaside resorts every year to spot the mammals during the South African winter from June to November.

whale vs yacht
Witnesses at the popular Hermanus seaside resort - about 80 miles east of Cape Town - said the whale appeared agitated and was slapping its tail on the water. But whale expert Meredith Thornton said this is a way the animals communicate with each other

Miss Werner said she first saw the whale when it was about 100m away. It breached once and, before they knew it, the whale was a mere 10m from their yacht.  'There was hardly any wind, so we couldn't get out of the way,' she said. 'We didn't have time to take any evasive action.'

But Ms Thorton said the whale was probably 'lob-tailing' in order to communicate with other whales.  She added: 'If a whale wanted to be aggressive it would side-swipe the boat with its tail.'

After the incident, Mothes and Werner surveyed the damage to their yacht.  'The first thing we did was make sure there was no water downstairs. We didn't know if the whale was coming back.'  They managed to turn the engine on and made it back to the marina without assistance.

Turtle dove trip

Well, its that time of year again when the Abrolhos season is finishing up. Craig from saltwater charters has his last trip this weekend, and then the boat is heading back to Perth.

With the boat coming back, there is a lot of productive fishing ground on the way, including the imfamous turtle dove shoal, and there'll be a few spots to jump on for the trip.

Idea is to leave Geraldton Mon (26th July), get to turtle dove around 3, fish for several hours, then start hitting spots on the way back (e.g. night time pinkies, dhuies, sambos, ambers, etc).

Get to jurien-ish way by dawn and fish there all morning (keep moving south and hitting spots). Then steam back to Hillarys for Tue evening.

So that would roughly put a time as follows:
12-3 (3) - get to turtle dove
3-9 (6) - fish turtle dove (if good stick around, if not move a little earlier)
9-5 (8) - work way to jurien for dawn. Should be about 6hrs travel, so 2-3hrs actual fishing on the way
5-11 (6) - fish jurien-ish spots (cervantes/jurien/etc is area) - which has a few fish...
11-6 (7) - head back to perth (may be able to get in later, hence more fishing time in between, but will check)

So works out to about 12+ actual fishing hours (weather permitted) once you take out the major travel. Keep in mind most day charters are about 8 hrs, and thats including all the travel (plus you get to fish turtle dove and jurien)

Cost would be $300. Will need to sort out how we'd be getting up there, but will figure it out if people are interested.

Will also see what weather's doing, but for now, let me know if you're interested?

The double-wahoo's we got on the trip up at the start of the season:

A tentative list:

1. Matt (though I need to sort out with work)
2. Nelly
3. Brody
4. Alfred
5. Helen?
6.
7.
8.

Car broken into at Kwinana Boat Ramp

GRRRRRRRR my car got broken into at kwinana boat ramp yesterday afternoon between 1pm - 5.30pm while me and another member, Goatlobster, were out fishing on the Jetski.

Assholes smashed the front passenger window and stole both our wallets, my iPhone, Panasonic Lumix underwater camera, and some sunglasses. We found Ben's (Goatlobster) set of car keys in my ignition, thats the part that scares me the most, they actually tried to steal the car!

A couple of hours later i got a facebook message from Ben, saying that someone had contacted him via Facebook, and told him that they had found his wallet. Apparantely this guy had also been broken into but in the carpark near Fremantle Power Station, and somehow he found a stash of stuff that had been stolen, nothing valuable, just wallets and stuff.. He also said a couple of guys fishing down the road had also been broken into!

I havent heard from the guy about any of my gear, but apparantely they went back to the place this morning and found a whole heap of stuff that looked like had been stolen, along with needles and the like, resembling some kind of junkie scum camp.

Lets hope the police catch these guys and most of our stuff can be returned.

GRRR gets me so angry!!

Off pink Pinkys

There have been heaps of Pinky pics posted lately, great job to all who have been getting them.  I have noticed that alot of them are not pink!  Is it just the camera and/or lighting conditions or are there off more off pink pinkys out there lately?

Rod Selection Advice 1 more Added

Hey people of Fish Wrecked!

I am just wondering which one of the folloowing rods would be most ideal for lobbing out baits of 200-300g. Rod will be used from rocks and beach so would prefer to get a bit of distance. Rods will be used to target Mulloway, Snapper, Sting Rays and so on.

8hp on 3m tinny

ive just bought this 3.1m savage kingfisher tinny and have a 3hp for it, it a bit underpowered and only tops about 11knots so i might repower the boat with an 8hp ive seen, the thing is the transom is weak because the first owner of the boat ran a 15hp on it so the guy i bought it off had to weld it up, and i just want to know your opinions on this
