Submitted by Seaquest on Sun, 2010-06-20 09:37Managed to go for my first fish in 6 weeks yesterday as I have just moved into a new house and I hate to say I have been too busy to fish.
Got a call from a mate at 9.30am seeing if I was keen on heading out. My plans of putting my fence up was put on hold as the weather was looking too good and it had been way too long between drinks.
Headed out around the Cape at 11am. The water was a bit lumpy but there was little wind.
First spot wasn't showing a lot of fish on the sounder but after a couple of drifts my mate Troy managed a solid pinkie of 85cm. Great way to start the day.

Next few drifts resulted in a couple of small dhuys that were released.
As the ocean had settled down I decided to head out and have a look at some ground I found a while ago but hadn't fished much.
Once at the spot I managed to find a few fish on the sounder but the bite was slow. After a few drifts the fish slowly started coming on the bite and we started getting a few small fish.
Just when I was thinking time to try a new spot Troy hooked up to something solid that wasn't stopping. After a few minutes Troy started to gain a bit of line from the fish. As the fish got closer to the surface it got further away from the boat and we both were thinking, could this be a 20kg+ dhuy?
When the fish came into view we could see it wasn't a dhuy but couldn't make out what it was. Then to our surprise a big blue hit the surface.

We both thought of releasing it as we knew how rare these fish are these days but unfortunately it was in bad way and wasn't going back.
With a couple of great fish on board it was time to head home.
Cheers
Brendan

Hillarys Landbased report... !MUST READ!
Submitted by DieHard on Sat, 2010-06-19 17:38OK today i set out to Hillarys Platform at 12:30...
i caught one snook at 33cm, ideal bait for mullaway. but using it for rays.
Leemo (liam) came a bit later at about 2pm and we set up the big rods.
with no success we were getting doubtful wen my rod get a take at at about 3:30 but did not hookup. i was reeling in and checked my bait out, A HUGE BITE right in the middle of the snook. Liam and i were seeing what the chances could be but we didnt get our hopes up at all.
so 5 minutes after i cast again. this time mucking it up as it whent about 15m out and ended in a HUGE over-wind. so there was me undoing a huge over-wind and about 5mins later success no more over-wind so as i was reeling in slack and rig i felt the rig moving... i was like WTF? is this the current or is it a fish? then i knew what it was as there was about a 5sec run. Gimbal belt was on and i was PUMPED.
We were all trying to suss out what type of fish it was??? as it had head-shakes but rarely so we called it a ray but then another head shake so we called it a snapper or Sandbar whaler shark. but then i noticed it kept going left and right along the rocks and then i called it as a mulluway. about 20mins into the fight, it broke the surface and we all stared and stared...... it was a MULLA! 5 minutes after Liam gaffed it and we all yelled our heads off in triumph!
Pulling the mulla onto the platform form the rocks was hard!
but once on the platform it was huge! i was in agony!!!! MY WHOLE BODY HURT!
after photos etc. we measured it at 123cm and estimated between 18-19 KGs!!!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thing is it was my first Mullaway and it was the first fish on the new O/H setup
WHAT A WAY TO CHRISTEN IT!
......................................................................................................
I called it a day after that and kindly gave the fish to Liam as i do not eat fish, i catch and release.
Thanks you Liam for assisting me throughout the whole fight!!!
Thank you brody for the Rig Advice!!!
Thank you Colin for telling me the ideal Mulla bait!!!

Quick morning fish, Claire got her first Coral Trout and Queeny.
Submitted by wadetolley on Sat, 2010-06-19 13:40Hello all. Headed out for a quick morning fish today. Wind was blowing fairly hard from the south east, so we snuck around to the northern side of conexion island. Lots of bomies and reef along the edge of the island, so i tied on a crome slice for Claire. With some great driving by the skipper, i put her on the spot. After a couple of casts, Claire was happy to pull in her first Coral Trout.

We then did some bottom fishing in around 10m of water and caught a couple of nice sized trickie snapper. Had to stay in close at the moment as the current is racing. We then headed around into the channel, hoping to find some birds working. After a mile or so we could see some action, so we pounded into the breeze heading south. The birds were going crazy, bait fish jumping out of the air. After about 10 mins of chasing the school and changing lures, i finally got Claire onto her first Queenfish. It gave her some curry, and she was happy when she landed it. Although she didnt like them because they stink. We had a mint day on the water, now time to put some Redbacks on ice, and get ready for the dockers game!

Fishing Gear Sale
Submitted by Stevef on Fri, 2010-06-18 14:23Hi Guys,
Just a heads up that Annaconda are having a big sale until the 23rd................. lot of crap gear but they also have some pretty nifty looking graphite rods for as little as $15. They have heaps of the pistol grip OH rods in stock as I reckon that they stock the stores the same all over Australia and the OH reels are not widely used in WA.......... thus heaps of surplus rods.
I know that this isnt top end gear but it might be worth a look................... no vested interest from me
Cheers Steve

A couple of metro tailor
Submitted by Colin Hay on Fri, 2010-06-18 12:01With the forecast suggesting that conditions would be close to ideal for a tailor session yesterday, Sherbs and I ventured to one of our favourite north metro spots hoping to pick up a few nice "greenbacks".
Arriving at our chosen location we found that we were the only anglers around and we were able to get to our preferred location on the rocks. With the swell up, we got pretty wet from waves spraying over the top of us, but the green and white water had us both psyched up for a big session.
However, it appeared we hadprobably arrived a little early as the first few hours were dominated by whiting and herring bites.
But then, with the sun finally getting close to horizon, the pickers shut down and we knew that the tailor had arrived.
Sure enough, within minutes I got my first tailor hit, only to drop what felt like a very good fish.
The next cast I had another good hit and managed to get a 45 cm plus tailor onto the rocks - only for it to bite me off and fall down between the rocks and disappear.
Sherbs was soon on and landed a nice 45 cm tailor, before losing another fish.
The tailor went off the bite for awhile and Sherbs and I were starting to get a little worried when the whiting started harassing our baits again.
But thankfully, it was only a short lull and the tell tale tailor hits started again.
I soon landed a really well conditioned fish of around 40cm and then a much more solid fish of 47 cm, while Sherbs unforunately, droped another fish.
Strangely, the fish went off the bite as soon as the sun sunk below the horizon, but it was of no matter as the short session was a lot of fun.
(P.S. Sorry about not having any pics, but I have banned myself from taking a camera with me at present as I think they are jinxing me).
All the best, Colin Hay

Will be going out on Sentosa charters as well and if you guys have any previous experience fishing this area recommendations on tackle/fishing spots would be greatly appreciated .

Bloody Coral Trout.
Submitted by wadetolley on Thu, 2010-06-17 11:23Went fishing down by the resort yesterday off the beach. Had a ball catching and releasing coral trout from 15cm long to 45 cms long, must of hooked onto around 30 fish. A good size rock bar runs all the way along the beach about 30 metres out. On high tide there is about 1 m of water above the rocks. I have been hurling out crome slices and retreiving them at a slow pace, the trout cant get enough of them. Not unusual to have another trout following his buddy right up to shore, when one is hooked on a lure. Have tried throwing out poppers of all colours over this same area, but they do not go for them.
Went out in the boat today. Tried some bottom fishing, but the current was strong and the fish were hiding. Lots of birds working so we thew on some lures. Hoping for some mackie or even a tuna for some strip bait. The fish working the bait were big queenfish, had a ball hooking up to a few. Hopefully sat when we go out, we can get over to skinny city and hook some bit gts. 10-4 over and out.

wtb saltist or saragosa
Submitted by Rig on Tue, 2010-06-15 18:34Hi Guys
I am looking at a new combo for high speen spinning off the rocks at quobba/steep on a pe4-6 rod
so far in my budget i have come across the shimano saragosa 18000F vs the Daiwa Saltist 6500 and I am having a tough time deciding the saltist has a better ratio 6:2:1 saragosa has 4:9:1 the saltist winds 134 cm per rotation and saragosa 104cm the satist has 30kg of drag and the saragosa.
On paper the saltist looks better with a faster retrieve but i have heard the sargosa may me tougher especially when my target species are mackies.
anyone used these and recomend one over another
thanks

Denham Sound Snapper TAC
Submitted by smicko on Mon, 2010-06-14 19:03You'd reckon that with the convoluted laws regarding the Shark Bay Pink Snapper fishery that a bit more information would be available online. The Denham Sound regs state a daily limit of 1 fish with a slot size between 500-700mm per day with a total allowable catch of 15 tonne for the Denham Sound fishery. But good luck trying to find any info as to whether that TAC has been achieved yet this year or in years past. It's a bloody minefield. But I guess that's what they were trying to achieve, make it too damn hard to keep any fish.
