Oceanic White Tip Shark
Submitted by bod on Sun, 2010-07-04 00:07DEADLY PURSUIT: THE MOMENT A DIVER COMES FACE TO FACE WITH KILLER SHARK
Like a rabbit in the headlights, this brave scuba diver faces off against one of the most feared and endangered predators of the deep.
With its notably long pectoral fins enabling it to glide like a bird through the water, a 10ft-long, 350lb female Oceanic White Tip shark was photographed by Brian Skerry off the Out Islands in the Bahamas.
Swimming inches past Mr Skerry's long-time collaborator Wes Pratt, the large shark observed the pair for two hours.

Fearsome: An Oceanic White Tip shark bears down on marine biologist Wes Pratt in the Bahamas
Patiently waiting for days to find one specimen, Mr Skerry counted himself lucky, as recent surveys have estimated that the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean population of the white tip to have fallen by 98 per cent since the 1950s.
'The Oceanic White Tip is considered one of the most dangerous sharks in the sea along with the Great White and Tiger,' said Mr Skerry, 48, who has been an underwater photographer for 30 years.
'It is responsible for some of the most famous episodes of man-eating in history, such as when the USS Indianapolis sank in 1945.
'Around 800 sailors escaped into the water when it was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine, but only 321 were pulled from the sea alive.
'Most of the deaths in the water were from dehydration and heat exposure, but a significant number were attacked by Oceanic White Tips.'
Classed as a pelagic shark, the White Tip is mainly seen out in the open water of the Earth's oceans.
The exact population of Oceanic White Tips around the world is unknown, but the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources have classed the shark globally as vulnerable and critically endangered in the Western and Central Atlantic Ocean.

Cage fighter: Mr Pratt enjoys a moment of respite inside a protective cage. His collaborator Brian Skerry took these pictures during a two-hour swim with the shark
Mr Skerry said: 'We were lucky to encounter this shark and more than that extremely lucky to observe it for two hours.
'I first saw it in the sea while on the boat and without wasting any time me and Wes dived straight in and started to photograph the shark.
'It was in the late afternoon and as soon as I was in the water the shark came over to investigate me.
'I had to push her away with the lens of my camera and eventually she settled into a circling pattern I suppose trying to work out what we were doing.'
Eventually lowering a cage into the water, Mr Skerry opted to stay out so as to observe Mr Pratt's human interaction with the large shark.
'My heart was definitely in my mouth when I jumped in and the nerves were going when I saw the shark heading towards Wes,' he said.
'If I wasn't slightly scared then I wouldn't be in the water, because that would be foolish.'

Lunch: The shark is fed some bait, while the biologists' boat can be seen floating on the water's surface
Eventually leaving the shark after two hours, Mr Skerry found the experience one to savour.
'She was definitely firm but polite and showed no outward signs of aggression,' he said. 'She was good to deal with.'
In fact, the reduction of Oceanic White Tips around the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean is reaching critical levels approaching extinction, according to prominent experts.
A study by Dr Ram Meyers in 2005 extensively studied the falling population of the Oceanic White Tips.
'I have seen research that indicates that Oceanic White Tip populations may have fallen by 98 per cent since 1955,' said Dr Samuel Gruber, 72, a shark expert who lives in Bimini, Florida.
Their food has been extensively fished in the Gulf and the Caribbean and it can be said that where once they were very common, they have disappeared in some areas.
'They still do well in areas such as Hawaii, but it is definitely something that we are watching with interest.'

Endangered species: Oceanic White Tip populations are thought to have fallen by 98 per cent since 1955

how to rig worms as bait
Submitted by cuthbad on Sat, 2010-07-03 00:14Im making up rigs for my first go at Canadian fishing, worms seem to be the go to bait, anyone have any experience doing this and know the best way to present them on hook? It seems some people here like to thread them onto a larger hook, like size 3. but i was wondering if two smaller hooks snelled and passed through the worm only once might present the bait more naturally and stop pickers from stealing the bait?
Any advice is appreciated! im new to this kind of fishing and the only guy i know here to get advice from hasnt fished in years.

Submitted by MiSh on Thu, 2010-07-01 10:37Taking the wife to shark bay in early September for a fishing holdiay. Unfortunatley unlike me she doesnt eat fish so rather than head our deep we would like to do some shallow water sight fishing. Just woundering which areas are best for shallow water lure fishing. Is shark bay side better or monkey mia better.
We will be taking a 4.5m runabout up there but im not too keen about taking it over to dirk harthog.
Thanks in advance

a new 'mane' course for Perth
Submitted by bod on Thu, 2010-07-01 09:57
Final approvals were issued yesterday by Agriculture Minister Terry Redman and now the hunt is on for a one to two-year-old horse that fits Mr Garreffa's exacting standards.
"It needs to be relatively young and obviously disease-free," he said. "Perhaps a horse that might be destined for the pet meat market."
In France, horse butchers, boucheries chevalines, have long been a part of the culinary landscape, but in recent years equine meat consumption in France has fallen out of fashion and sales have plummeted.
But Mr Garreffa and Nedlands restaurateur Pierre Ichallalene, of Chez Pierre, are confident there will be great interest from diners, particularly on France's national day, Bastille Day, on July 14.
"It's something different, which makes it very interesting," Mr Ichallalene said. "We sell livers, brains, that kind of thing, so I suspect people will give it a go. We'll do a taster on Bastille Day and then if there's a good reaction we'll put it on the menu.
"We'll be using the fillets, they're very rich and very lean, so they need to be cooked no more than medium rare, like kangaroo. We'll serve it up very simply with perhaps a sweeter sauce, much in the same way you'd treat game."
Mr Redman's decision to allow horse to join cattle, sheep, pigs and goats as a "declared animal under the WA Meat Industry Act" was temporary, the minister's spokesman said. But the Government would "consider extending approvals should the public appetite for horse demand it".
There is no domestic market for horse meat, but there is a successful export market, which Mr Garreffa believes WA should have a share of.
Mr Garreffa will be serving horse meat with truffles at next month's Mundaring Truffle Festival.
Pan fried fillet of horse with reduction sauce.
Ingredients
4 trimmed horse fillets (about 250g each)
2 Shallots
1/2 cup of sherry vinegar
10 button mushrooms
2 cups of demi-glace or rich beef stock
20g butter
Method
1. Season the steaks well and panfry in a hot pan until rare to medium-rare. Take them off heat to rest.
2. In same pan, sauté shallots and mushrooms until soft, then deglaze pan with sherry vinegar and reduce by half. Add demi-glace and reduce by half again
3 When sauce is the right (sticky) consistency, take it from the heat and whisk in the butter until glossy. Adjust seasoning. Return the meat to the sauce to warm through. Serve with sauce on the side.
This dish goes really well with honey roasted parsnips, sweet potato and nutmeg puree or Lyonnaise potatoes

Terminal Knot Advice
Submitted by buschy on Wed, 2010-06-30 12:53Hi all,
Simple question - what knot would you recommend for hooks / swivels on a light 4lb Fireline setup? I wan't to max the breaking strain so need a knot that will knot (sic) cut into the line. Would a snell be the way to go? Or do you think a Palomar is a better option?
The hooks I typically use all have a straight eye - which I think is relevant for some knots (triple Palomar?)
Thanks,
Buschy
P.S. Apologies this is in the wrong forum - I can't seem to access the Knots & Rigging forum from work!

WA's freshwater fish data now available on internet
Submitted by bod on Tue, 2010-06-29 12:24The database supporting the website will allow a strategic overview, for the future management of freshwater finfish and invertebrates in WA and help inform conservation, rehabilitation and restocking programs to preserve fish fauna and control feral species.
Jointly funded by Fisheries and WA’s Natural Resource Management office, the website provides a valuable State repository for distribution data, on native and introduced species, collected by various Government agencies, universities and research organisations.
Principal Freshwater Fish Research Scientist, Dr Craig Lawrence said until now there had not been a single resource available to store and permit people to view this collated data.
“To get it up and running we have worked with other departments and universities to capture and consolidate all available information and the database and website will continue to grow and develop as new research data is added,” Dr Lawrence said.
“It is exciting that future research will not only help update data, but to fill knowledge gaps.”
Dr Lawrence said website users could browse by species or region or use the map navigation function to find out more about the distribution of various freshwater species.
“We have sourced all accessible information and hope the benefits our database and website provide will encourage any researchers with any existing distributional data, not already captured, to contribute this data to further enhance the information,” he said.
“The Department of Fisheries has responsibility for management of fish resources in Western Australia.
“This website will benefit the State by improving public awareness and appreciation for native freshwater fish and crustaceans and their habitats in local waterways. It will also enable tracking of the spatial and temporal distribution of the populations of both native and feral species.
“Creation of the database that underpins the website will improve data management, record keeping standards, data accessibility and collaboration between research institutions and government departments.”
