Boat Hire - Exmouth
Submitted by Fishwrecked on Wed, 2008-06-25 13:03Hi Crew,
I don't do this very often but I'd like to advise any fishwrecked member not to hire boats from Bluewater BOAT HIRE in Exmouth. I have hired the boats twice in the last year both with serious problems out to sea. Over the radio the last few weekends, almost as many as I care to remember, there have been calls to sea rescue for assistance. I would hate for any FW member to have their holiday ruined by these less than reliable vessels. (Thats not to mention the spinal surgery you require after a day on the water in them)
Cheers, Adam

Full story on "approved fish names"
Submitted by Colin Hay on Wed, 2008-06-25 12:23WHAT’S described as one of the most important developments for seafood consumers in over 200 years was launched today Australia-wide.
It is a scheme whereby seafood retailers displaying the “Approved Fish Names” logo guarantee to use nationally standardised fish names, helping to remove the confusion that numerous surveys have revealed reduces consumers’ confidence in purchasing seafood.
Mr Ted Loveday, Managing Director of Seafood Services Australia said today’s launch of the Fish Names Brand Scheme was a critically important innovation for both seafood businesses and consumers.
“A lot of people in the seafood industry are very excited about this scheme,” Mr Loveday said. “It’s a breakthrough. It’s been a long time coming and will make a real difference to seafood retailing across the nation.
“It’s adoption by all the retailers at the Sydney Fish Market from today is just the beginning, and a very significant indication of how responsible retailers believe adopting the standard fish names scheme can benefit their business and help consumers. The Sydney Fish Market is the largest seafood market in the country and all of the retailers there recognize the benefits of this scheme.
“By adopting the scheme and displaying the ‘Approved Fish Names’ logo in their premises, participating retail outlets can demonstrate to customers their commitment to the accurate use of names and labelling of fish. That will certainly give them a marketing edge”.
Mr Loveday said the SSA scheme aimed to strengthen consumer confidence in seafood.
“The Australian Fish Names Standard AS SSA 5300-2007 defines one Standard Fish Name to be used for each seafood species produced or traded in Australia. The list was developed by SSA’s National Fish Names Committee through an extensive consultation process involving seafood experts, consumer representatives, fisheries managers and other stakeholders -- a mammoth six-year project involving public consultation and the assigning of names for 4,500 seafood species -- and was adopted by Standards Australia as an official Australian Standard in July 2007.
“Confusion over fish names in Australia began at least 238 years ago, when Captain Cook sailed into Botany Bay and his crew caught a reddish fish he named ‘snapper’, because it was similar to an entirely different family of fish he was familiar with from earlier trips to the Americas. In fact, Cook’s ghost can rest easy: that name is so popular it has been retained as the standard name across the country. But that’s ‘snapper’, not ‘schnapper’: the extra ‘ch’ was an adornment restaurateurs added later.”

Whats the go with Squidding?
Submitted by Elora Danan on Wed, 2008-06-25 09:24Gday knackers,
I've been struggling to get into some squid for the past couple years and haven't caught one probably since 2006 and I've been trying so much everytime I go fishing from the stones. I work my squid jigs close to the weed and don't even get a touch or follow, I use small jigs and still nothing. I atleast fish for Squid for about an hour before I fish for fish. My squid jigs are the old Razorbacks in Pinks, Orange and others. What the hell am I doing wrong?
1- What could I do to break the drought?
2- What's you're recommendations on Squid Jigs?
3- Actions to use on Squid Jigs?
Cheers fella's, well appreciated.

$50,000 boost for Ocean Reef Boat Harbour plan
Premier Alan Carpenter today presented the City of Joondalup with a $50,000 cheque as part of a $700,000 State Government commitment towards the city’s Ocean Reef Marina precinct structure plan.
Mr Carpenter said planning for the transformation of Ocean Reef Marina into a major boat harbour, commercial and recreational precinct was well under way.
“I congratulate the city for ensuring strong community representation through the reference group in overseeing this project,” he said.
“A concept plan for the precinct is soon to be released and a business case is being developed.
“Local people recognise the project’s enormous potential to create jobs, improve boating facilities and provide a world-class recreation precinct for the northern suburbs.
“I am sure that they, along with local member John Quigley MLA , who is a strong advocate, are looking forward to seeing the structure plan completed and development under way.”
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan, who initiated the State Government commitment in 2004, said that Ocean Reef Marina was a valuable location for such a development.
“While Western Australians have a seemingly insatiable appetite for recreational boating and for oceanside recreational activity, there are very few metropolitan locations where such development is acceptable,” Ms MacTiernan said.
“At Ocean Reef we are fortunate to have an established facility, with room to expand and community support.
“Recreational boating is becoming more and more popular as part of WA’s lifestyle and we need to provide the coastal facilities for this.”
The structure plan, which will detail the size and location of development, is expected to be completed in mid-2009.

Wow, my boats at the doctors.
Submitted by fisherking on Mon, 2008-06-23 18:27
Well, that's me out of the water for a while
.
When I bought my boat 8 mths ago, I knew it needed a bit of attention to the hull, in particular the keel. It had been given a DIY fiberglass makeover & I just knew one day it would have to be done professionaly.
I went through the yellow directory this morning & tried a few numbers. I tried 5 numbers, 3 were too busy, one went to message bank & only one was interested. After a short chat over the phone, I tried to get a rough idea of price. I was told in the region of $1500 & $2000.
Not bad I thought, that's about what I was expecting. He said they had a quite spell, so I went home, fetched the boat & set off to Wangara. A fair trek from Maddington.
I arrived at the place, the guy came out, rolled under the boat & all I heard was that sharp intake of breath that mechanics make. You know, the one that means it's gonna cost a hell of a lot more than first thought.
He rolled out from under & said "it's gone mate, no good! You don't actualy use it do ya?". Ok, give it to me, how much to put it right.
$8000 was the reply. I was gutted. Really, really gutted. I was in a whole world of hurt. The boat cost that much. I ralised I'd been ripped off.
Driving back home (with a tear in my eye), my phone rang. It was the guy I'd called & left a message. A quick chat with him & he told me to take it round.
Off to O'connor then. This guy looked & made the same noises, told me the same things & then said he could do it all, make it good as new for $5000 & it would be finished in 4 weeks.
So that's it, it's at the doctors. Costing alot more than expected but, hey what price safety. Apparently I'm lucky to still have a boat & even be here to moan about the cost.
So a word from me, who learnt the hard way. If you're gonna buy a second hand boat, get it checked by a prof before you part with your hard earned cash.

Water Police in the sound
Submitted by Neander on Mon, 2008-06-23 14:53When we were just moving from the sound to head out under the bridge to head out to five fathoms got pulled up by the police for a safety inspections.
Basically asked to site all safety gear on board as well as RST and they were off.
I asked if they knew what it was outside and they said they didnt know. They had just been cruising on the inside of Garden island checking boats.

My question is how do you kill them ?
How to look after them for the table?
Never fished for them so I don't know what the best way to look after them is.
Thanks

Caring For Your Fish
Submitted by carnarvonite on Mon, 2008-06-23 11:50To stop my fish from getting bruised when bringing them on board I use a wet old lounge cushion or foam rubber to put the fish on.
This stops them flapping about and damaging the flesh and makes it a simple job to spike them.
Just rinse the cushion/foam in fresh water ,squeeze and leave to dry ready for next trip--usually get 8-10 trips out of each one

Garfish
Submitted by rainbow on Sat, 2008-06-21 21:31I was watching "fishing Australia" & a few garfish were caught in NSW among heaps of other varieties you would catch in WA. As I used to enjoy getting a few around Port Philip Bay using a long float i wondered if i will encounter any in WA? Aussie bass was another fish you fishwreckers never mention.
I`d rather be fishin`

Not iceing your catch
Submitted by Dean on Fri, 2008-06-20 21:56Just after reading the commodore marine post about the fishing boat.
Just wondering why everyone says You must Ice your catch.
We sometimes do and sometimes dont. And honestly can't tell a difference from eating between a fish which has been put on ice and one which hasn't.
They are put straight into a killtank, and bled.
