Re survey Genesis Boat???

I have recently been told by my mechainc that my 115 etec has been 'overworked' for want of a better word

my crankshaft ad crankcase have both been basically written off

my problem is my boat is rated by survey to hold a 125hp maximum.

outboards are generally in 115 then jump to a 130.

im not that keen to get another 115 because of whats happened this time (engine did have 1000 hours on it)

i feel i wont be able to have it insured if i have a 125 rated boat and have a 130 on it.

we drive long kms in carnarvon, often doin overnighters and carrying a fair bit of gear fuel people etc...no more then what the weight plate says.

the boat is so wide and tall i always thought a 115 was underpowered

the other option is to get a 115HO which gives the equivalent of a 127hp engine....but i have read elsewhere that if you feel a certain engine size is underpowered for your boat, you shouldnt get the HO option you should get the next size..but its not rated

my question is does anyone know if you can have your boat re-surveyed and maybe get the weight rating increased, or can you get it insured if you have a bigger outboard on then what is recommended

thanks for  your help

Jess

Berried Crays - what would you do?

Hi All, we're currently running a set of pots wide in 35m which unfortunately are producing some majestic berried females (all thrown back) and the remaining are back in say the 25's which are getting zip. Being my first cray season, if you were me would you bring all 6 pots in close awaiting the smaller whites to march (from what I can read only divers seem to be successful in close at present) and hopefully pick up a few resi's at the same time or take them all wide and wait for the female to release their eggs over the 3-4 week incubation period or keep them split hoping for some quality as well as quantity? I look forward to your feedback.

point peron ramp yesterday

it was flat our at PP ramp yesterday but I didn't see any ramp rage , what I did see was people helping other people out , a newby to boating (and he admitted it) on the other side of the ramp to me attempted to drive his boat onto his trailer and got it all wrong and got stuck on his trailer I helped his missus pull it back of the trailer and the bloke waiting in the queue behind him at the ramp came up and said "can I show you how to drive it on" "the guy said I would appreciate it" and so the bloke behind drove that blokes boat onto the trailer for him , all good we got our boats out and we had a chat in the car park for about 30 minutes and all exchanged phone numbers the way it should be

tasty fish

probably been done before , but what is your favorite sea food feed mine are pretty simple and bread and butter stuff, mine are

1, blue swimmer crabs in thick crusty bread washed down with a emu export

2, lightly pan fried KGW shared with the wife ( ok its not quite a bread and butter species )

3 sand whiting fillets between two pieces of toast

4 smoked herring or tailor for breeky

had all the other fish and seafood types and are good but hard pressed to beat the bread and butter stuff done the right way

Crabbing time waster between strings - or not

Was crabbing in Peel saturday, and as we were close to the eastern flats dawesville way decided to pop for whiting. Had a few cast with no follows, so decided to return to the string after a 40min soak.

Instead of stacking the popper rods away said to the deckie just chuck them out and we will slow troll over the flats back to the first float. Again over the shallow water nada, but as soon as we moved into deeper water bang bang, both rods went off with acrobatic herring. Managed to drop mine but the Mrs got hers onboard. Repeated the exercise and managed 8 hits, 6 onboard and I dropped 2. That was for very little effort and almost a time waster between strings.

After pulling the pots (and giving up with only 2 legal sized berried Jenny's among 20 odd Juvies) after 2 runs decided to fish the cut. Changed one lure to a trust little brown trout imitation and left a popper on the other. The takes continued but now on only the one popper. Pretty soon changed the minnow back to a popper and on again. Managed a few this way, which for us was a first. Trolling Poppers for Hezza's. Even hooked a tailor but you know what that ment, one lost not cheap tiny whiting popper.

Now the question. has anyone else ever tried this either between strings, or designated. These lures are a lot smaller than I normally troll for herring and/or tailor in the cut but might change the plan in the future because the hits from the herring was up on previous attempts with minnows and slices, and the troll speed was low at ~2.5knots.

Just wondering.

Boat Ramp timewasters

Ive just about had a gutfull of Boat Ramp timewasters and the busy times havent even started yet so here goes.

You are a boat ramp timewaster if you do the following while launching:

Rig your boat up IN the launch lanes  (That makes you  the king of the timewasters)

Load your boat from your car IN the launch lanes (so does that)

Stand around and have a good ol' CHAT with ya mates in the launch lane before and after launching your boat ( go chat on the ocean)

If you cant perform the simple task of reversing your car down the ramp  ( go PRACTICE reversing)

You dont PRE-LOOSEN the shackle on the bit of chain that holds your boat on the trailer and then spend 10 mins looking for a pair of pliers

You dont take your boat all the way to the END of the jetty after launching it.

You park your car after launching go to your boat then realise you forgot to buy a ticket so then you go buy one and hold everybody up

You launch, park your car then take forever to walk back to your boat cos your a lazy, inconsiderate  (walk faster were waiting)

Your mates running late so you decide to launch straight away (thats fine) - but then you TIE OFF on the jetty to wait for him instead of going over to the waiting area (go over to the waiting area your in everybody's way ).

You push off of the jetty first BEFORE you start your motor, the motor wont start or the battery is flat and your floating there like a  idiot asking us non- to tow you back

You are a boat ramp timewaster if you do the following while retrieving:

You overtake someone in the cue (most would agree you should get a smak in the  mouth for that one)

You have no idea how to dock your boat and hit the boat in front of you (go practice during the quiet times).

You dock the boat then you and ya mate(s) have a good ol' chat on the boat while waiting for the boat in front of you to be retrieved THEN you decide maybe you'll go get the car and trailer - go to the car as soon as you dock its quicker

ou cant get the boat onto the trailer even with help from any crew youve got with you  (go practice)

Once the boats on the trailer still in the ramp you start unloading your gear to people on the jetty - just  and do it in the car park.

You drive up the ramp, stop with the boats rear still down the incline angle and remove the bungs then we all gotta wait for the water to drain out (just off out the way)

The worst timewasters of all however are the ones that do any of the above and then start a big confrontation with the non-timewasters like myself just cos i said something to you about it.

sustain 3000FE

hey guys just thought id throw the feelers out on a little issue ive been having with my sustain and see if anyone else has had the same problem. the other day while fishing through the canning bridge area my drag ratchet stopped working....now this is in fact the third spool I have had this happen to...the actual clicker attatched to the spool actually snaps and bye bye noise. so just wondering has anyone else has this issue before coz im slightly fed up with it happening. I love my shimano and haven't had anny issues except with this one and its only about 3 years old at the most and since my receipt has gone walkabout its an expensive replacement for a whole spool and as far as I know they don't do that part as a separate spare.

cheers

Anyone know of someone SOR who does mobile Etec servicing?

Where to go? - Easter 2014

Thinking about doing a trip somewhere next easter for about 10days or so. Wanting to tow my 6.5m 225hp trailcraft with me.

Usually head up to exmouth but last trip (2yrs ago) with my old boat, we were nailed by the sharks at almost every spot inside and outside of the reef. Got that bad that we actually cut our trip short and havent returned since! is the shark situation still as bad?

What other options are there for a boat of this size? Thinking maybe harthog? sharkbay area? I'm going to rule out Kalbarri due to the crossing especially if the swell is up.

I like the idea of somewhere similar to exmouth where you can escape the wind by fishing the lee side if it decides to blow too..

any thoughts?

cheers

The worlds greatest invention

Want to know people's thoughts on the best inventions ever! Obviously the internal combustion engine tops the list, but more basic things. Blu tack, cable ties, things that are so simple, yet so brilliant we take them for granted. Interested to see what comes up

See temperature charts

Who uses which temperature chart? After a season of no success with trolling I am looking into investing in a surface temperature map. And I am wondering what everyone is using and what your experience is with the charts. I also just got a 5m boat and only can get out to about 50m deep and I am not sure if its worth it either. If anyone got some input would be much appreciated

Thanks Seb

kalbarri landbased fishing report

So been managing to get out a little bit and do some landbased fishing. There has been some good tailor starting to move in down the cliffs from pot alley to eagle gorge. When swell permits you can get down to the ledges and get into them. Wittacarra has been good for tailor as well just before sunrise and on dusk. Been some good bronzies being hooked as well in the early mornings if your into that type of fishing! The river has been going off with really good numbers of bream being caught from the refuel jetty all the way up river. Some decent size Javlin fish being caught up river as well. Mullaway are starting to make a bit more of an appearance off the beaches from chinamans and up the coast. Tailor off frustrations are in pesky numbers on dusk through to night. Crabs have been pretty quiet but hopefully will fire up as this moon comes on to full shortly. With the dredge in town now pumping the fish are starting to get fiesty. There are still really good numbers of yellowfin whiting in the river as well up to and over 30cm. Been an amazing year for whiting on the flats here in ankle deep water but they can be found in numbers up river past castle rock on the flats as well. Hope this helps.

Greg Pickering's shark attack story

Two-time shark victim s horror story

Two-time shark victim Greg Pickering.

The abalone diver who incredibly survived a second shark attack has revealed he did not see the great white that tried to bite his head off - but instead recognised the sound of teeth on bone.

Greg Pickering, 55, was diving for abalone off a remote part of WA’s southern coast last month when he was attacked by a suspected great white shark.

It was the second time Mr Pickering had lived through a shark attack, after being bitten by a 1.5 metre bronze whaler while in waters near Cervantes, north of Perth, in 2004 as he was trying to help a friend.

Speaking about his ordeal for the first time, Mr Pickering told the Seven Network’s Sunday Night program about the circumstances of the attack, which left him needing 10 hours of surgery on facial and other wounds.

“I heard the sound, the thrashing sound, of teeth on bone - and I remembered the sound from the last time I was bitten,” Mr Pickering said.

“I thought ‘that is probably a shark’, but I didn’t see it - I heard the attack.”

The show says Mr Pickering is now the only man in the world to be attacked by sharks in separate incidents and live to tell the tale.

And the interview will also detail how Mr Pickering used his 40-year diving experience to hold his breath and rise to the surface slowly after the attack, despite the water turning red around him from the blood pouring from his horrific injuries.

A roll of duct tape and a towel were used to hold Mr Pickering’s shredded face together, as his eight-hour journey to hospital started.

Mr Pickering told reporter Mark Ferguson that he felt he had been spared his life.

“It (the shark) suddenly stopped and let me go, so I have definitely been given another chance,” Mr Pickering said.

“I do believe I have been given a second chance.

"God has given me a second chance, there is no doubt about that.”

Soon after the attack, Mr Pickering’s family expressed their thanks to paramedics, surgeons, doctors and nurses who helped save his life, while Fisheries Department director-general Stuart Smith slapped a kill order on the shark.

But the order was then called off because the shark was not spotted again and was no longer considered a threat to school-holiday campers in the area.

Mr Pickering returned to the area where he was attacked, Poison Creek at Cape Arid National Park, about 180km east of Esperance, to tell his story.

The interview with Mr Pickering will air on the Seven Network’s Sunday Night at 7.30pm on Sunday.
