Sambo Sesh Saturday
Submitted by JohnF on Sun, 2010-11-21 14:00Well, very late start after a heavy night on Friday night (thanks Daz, Chrisp and SamC for the hangover!!!!). It took a phone call from Daz at around 10.30am on Saturday morning, telling me that it was a millpond at the barges, to wake me up….3 panadol and a quick fill of the boat with go juice and me, my young bloke and my ex next door neighbour Cliff were off heading for the barges….12.14 by now.
Great run out, and along the side of Rotto it was a complete glass-off……very eerie crusing at 28 knots and only a gentle slap of water on the hull. Heaps of flying fish as well to keep us company.
Got to the North barge, was only one boat, and after a quick sound, the big shapes looked like sharks so we called Daz and told him we would meet him at the outer barge, I think he was further south, he said something about blokes falling off the side of boats and Shimano Stellas being used as sinkers…….hahaha……JEEZE!
Anyhow, the ex neighbour only had an old two piece snapper rod and Penn 950 and no jigs, so I handed him a cheapy Williamson Benthos to tie on to his outfit.....….by the time I had rigged up, he was on and complaining loudly….Cliff is a big bloke, but this sambo was getting the better of him and his meat grinder Penn 950 was getting a serious work-out.

I cracked out the Stella on PE5 and dropped down and was on pretty quick and it felt like a nice fish, looked over at Cliff and he was still loosing line………..the 950 spool was looking VERY low.

Got my fish in after a nice fight, only drama being the poxy JM knob almost fell off mid fight…..Daz had warned me this happens…………fish went 125 cm, or 25 kg using the scale provided by recfish. Nice, speared back in no dramas.

Back to Cliff…….still struggling, and not making much head way…..after another 15 minutes a big lump of a Sambo popped up……took two of us to lift it on board…..biggest Sambo I have seen……around 150cm and 40 kg….good fish. It took two spears top get back in but swam off well.

Daz and Kasey hooked up, but got busted off I think then went and checked out a sunfish that came over to check out the action.

Cliff took a spell (fishwrecked!) and I hooked up again, nice fish this one, but after a pretty good run busted me off……certainly took enough line to reach the wreck, but could have been a shark……so we headed to the North Barge to see if we could get a mid water amber to put on the BBQ that night.
Me and Daz were about 150 m apart sounding for the school……both of us found them, must have been a big school up high in the water…….jigged for quite a while with no hits, so we moved a bit, me and cliff both hooked up near surface and both got absolutely smoked…………I had the Stella seriously wound up (post fight I checked and cold not pull it off by hand) and line was leaving the spool faster than any fish I have ever hooked……and it kept going……Stella drag was seriously hot by the time the Collins class submarine or whatever it was reached the depths and the sharks took over…………………………….could only guess it was an XOS amberjack, as it went significantly harder than the 40 kg sambo earlier.
Very disappointed at having such a huge fish sharked, so we left and chased some squid at Rotto for the BBQ that night…….around 5.00 pm we got to the weed bank…..and it was on! Squid everywhere, and we had several double and one triple hook-up with other squid following them in. Got some really big squid, and all 3 of us got totally inked by the biggest squid of the day, much to the amusement of the chardonnay set on the 60 ft ship parked next to us…..we pulled the pin once we had more than enough at 5.45pm and headed home to a dream run in with a few whales breaching right the way to 3 mile.

Top day, just need to find a patch with no sharks.
Also went out for a quick run this morning, first time fish for my youngest bloke (2 years old). Pic of him with his first fish……just as good as the 40kg Sambo!!!!!

Furuno FCV620 question
Submitted by r.gates on Sun, 2010-11-21 13:41Hi all
I've just installed a new Furuno FCV620 sounder (and Lowrance HDS-8m GPS) into the TB590 and we hit the water yesterday.
The triducer (525STID-PWD) is supposed to be a dual frequency 50/500kHz unit with inbuilt speed sensor (paddle wheel) and water temperature. The sounder works very well and we learnt lots about how to work it 'on the fly' yesterday but we never had any speed or water temperature indications. I installed the triducer using the supplied instructions so I'm happy with its placement on the transom.
I tried to see if the paddle wheel was turning while we were travelling but as it's under the unit, I couldn't see, but the position of the triducer in the water looked ok.
I've attached a picture I took of the unit while we were fishing (depth in feet until we found the menu to change the units) and as you can see there's a multicoloured strip on the left edge of the bottom lock screen which didn't change all day, and below the B/L-HF indication across the top, there's a 0.0 value.
I'm wondering if the 0.0 might be speed and the water temperature might be the multicoloured strip....any clues from anyone with one of these units, thanks. Should I have turned the 'Temp Graph' option ON in the Display Menu for the temperature to work??
We did have the unit selected to HF ZOOM most of the day and saw lots of 'flares' and other 'activity' just above the bottom on the right screen and this showed up in much more definition on the left hand bottom lock screen. Alas, we couldn't convert much of this activity into fish on the boat, but we had a ball....gotta pay your dues before you can reap the rewards!
All comments and feedback would be greatly appreciated.
regards
rusty...

guildford fishing
Submitted by jnr81 on Sun, 2010-11-21 07:43just wondering how many people find the guildford bassendean area for fishing, i have lived here for many years now and fished here as well always moving spot to spot but i cant stress enough that i find it hard when every time i go fishing there is always the selected few that give us fishos a bad name by leaving rubbish around and rorting the system. Guess im really looking for feedback on other peoples expreiences and thoughts on this subject in this area.

Boating checklist
Submitted by Goodz on Sat, 2010-11-20 20:42So after the recant purchase of a boat, I've realised things aren't quite coming second nature yet and I've already found myself forgetting to put the bung in on the last trip out... it wasn't till I was standing in water that I realised! On a positive note I did get to test the bilge pump out, and it works! haha... but come on, who hasn't forgotten the bung atleast once in their lifetime!?!?!
Just wondering what things people would suggest putting on a checklist for departing in a boat and also returning home. Things like checking the bung is in.... checking you have the winch handle for your trailer. And then when getting back in.. turning your sounder and radio off.
What else?

sambo mayhem today
Submitted by Ryan C on Sat, 2010-11-20 20:16hi all ,just got home from an epic day on the water i took my brother , brother in law and two mates to the sambo aggs today , with the boys not being very experienced with big fish /jigging etc i supplied all the gear and spent time catching a tank full of livies (snook, herring, whiting)then blasted to rotto in perfect conditions , we fished the southern spots and fished the livies on circle hooks and every drop resulted in a sambo of 20 plus kilos some pushing 30 , we were soon surrounded by 10/15 boats jigging who were not having any success , while every short drift resulted in multiple hookups for my crew on the live bait (not too fashionable but very effective today)after 15 odd captures all bar 1 sambo released successfully with minimal damage and no sharking !!!! 1 hooked deeply and bled and on ice for the brother in law, pb's for all of my crew and smiles all round. on the last drop i let my brother in law (who is about 60 kilos wringing wet ) use my stella 20,000, anyway shortly after he touched bottom his live snook was taken by another solid sambo and i watched him for aminute getting his arms stretched then turned away to look at the gps and check our drift track when i heard a splash and some excited yelling i turned my head to see my crew leaning over the side pulling the brother in law back into my boat and my 20,000 stella combo no where to be seen (on its way to the bottom in 99.5 m of water with large sambo attatched (f@##ck!!!!!)he"d been pulled overboard !!!!! and lost my outfit!!!!!!after some minutes of deep sadness !!LOL AND A MINUTE OF SILENCE FOR THE LOSS OF AN OLD FRIEND (STELLA!) i decided to head to the northern aggs and see if the sharks were as bad as i have heard ,when we arrived at the northern spot we saw one boat with a bent but outfit hook and lose a shark so i dropped the head of the sambo we had in the icebox down on 80lb with a 5m cable trace and within a minute it was taken , after 1 hour or so of 5 person tag team fishing on a penn 950/37kg berkley dropshot outfit (with the drag locked and plenty of spool holding!!!) we got a whaler shark of massive proportions to the boat, i estimate it to have been 250kg or more and over 3metres it was a beast !! all 5 of us need to see a chiropractor after attempting something so stupid on the wrong type of outfit!!!!anyway this was enough for the day so we headed in on a glassy sea with a couple of jacks and cola and the stereo cranked up , it was an awesome day for all of us (other than my back issues from the shark!!!and lost stella outfit!!! CHEERS photo"s to follow

stress relief sorted out now
Submitted by fisho-ron on Sat, 2010-11-20 18:22got my fix of boating today and what a day for it, near perfect cond all day, even with the thick fog this morning.
hit the barges first up and ambers were everywhere with no sharks for us anyway, (some for others) even with the big rod out with a whole fish on it but no takers. they seemed to be taken on baits today alot more than jigs?
at one stage the ambers hit the top and the water was boiling, hundreds of them jumping around everywhere, chucked on some lures and got a couple trolling.
move on to a spot in the 40's a friend passed on and got into a couple of small sambos as well, chucked some baits down for them, they wouldnt touch the jigs. as a bycatch also got a small just size jew and a just under pinky and 3 big black ass.. all at the same spot.
every thing was returned well.... except for 1 amber for a feed.
again the whales were going off, with 2 pods coming past us in about 1hr with 4-5 in each pod.
also good to see fisheries at woody's this arvo checking as many as poss by the look of things.
all up good to be out on the boat again, but cant wait for the 16th dec.
cheers ron

Submitted by scotto on Sat, 2010-11-20 16:52howd everyone go with todays weather and crays?
they were a bit hard to find in 25m at rotto today. heaps of berried though. reds and whites.
i'm debating weather to hit some shallower (15 - 16m) spots tommorrow or give it a miss until next week.
i did however find a VERY nice cave, holding no less than 5 good sized dhus (one at least 12kg), a big heard of large queen snaps, martia hines's and a lonesome horse of a king george. roll on 15th dec...

PGFC FADs prep 20 Nov 2010
Submitted by till on Sat, 2010-11-20 16:19Despite the fantastic boating weather, there was a good turnout for the PGFC FADs working bee. Endless piles of anchors, rope, chain and shackles. Hopefully all they all made it back together in the right fashion. While we were building the PGFC ones, the Jurien ones were also built, and White from Seasports took them with him.
Pic 1 shows workers of all sizes at it.
Pic 2 shows Otto, Whitey and myself unspooling some fresh line.
Pic 3 shows the Perth FADs built and ready for depolyment.

Lamble bait jigs
Submitted by Luke R on Sat, 2010-11-20 15:09hey all
Well i have had quite a few people coming in asking when i will be getting another order of lamble bait jigs in. Finally they came in this morning and after drooling all over them this morning they are now on the shelf. Lamble baits are one of the best jigs i have used and the finish on them is probably the best i have seen on a jig. So for those of you that want them.... BE QUICK. Heres a few pics to get out. We also just got a hand full of hand made marine baits in which are worth a look at also

fiday nights shark sesh
Submitted by brenz on Sat, 2010-11-20 10:59decided earlier in the week that i would hit up some sharks last night out off hillarys . we hit the ramp at 6.45 pm only to be greeted with close to 0 knot winds and an ocean that could only be described as a mirror so in went the boat as well as my mate tysons boat and we were off. we got to the spot shortly after and anchored up straight away the sounder had lit up . as we were on my snapper spots it was quite obviouse what the distinct arks were on the sounder wich frustrated me beyond beleif knowing i was only 6 mt away from boating some shallow water pinks but we were there for sharks so thats what we proceeded to target for obviouse reasons(demersal ban). filled the berly pot up with all the goodies and out went the baloons wich was a particularly hard task as there was no wind. after half an hour we were on and a short time later we had a nice little 2-3 ft specimen on the boat. next nelly was up with a short hard run followed by silence . thinking the bait was dropped he started reeling in the line when zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz of it went theis was a much larger shark wich only stayed connected for 5-10 more seconds before it all went slack .... damn all over. another hour passed with no more joy so we decided to pack it up only to find the berly pot had been bitten off only meters under the boat lol.
all in all a fantastic night and will be hitting it up again sooner rather than later.

New passing lanes on NW Coastal nearing completion
Submitted by Colin Hay on Fri, 2010-11-19 15:26New passing lanes on NW Coastal nearing completion
Portfolio: Transport
Transport Minister Simon O’Brien said today that construction of two new vehicle passing lanes on North West Coastal Highway in the Gascoyne would be open by the end of November.
BGC Contracting is building the lanes at a cost of $2.3million.
Mr O’Brien said North West Coastal Highway was a key tourism, pastoral and mining route and the safety of its users was paramount.
“Road safety is a priority area for the State Government and building two new passing lanes on the highway between Burkett Road and Barrdale will improve safety and traffic flow,” he said.
“The highway is also a major freight route with triple road trains operating north of Carnarvon.”
The Minister said demand for the movement of freight would increase with significant industry expansions and new mining developments in Western Australia’s Gascoyne and Pilbara regions.
“The Gascoyne and Pilbara form the foundation of Australia’s buoyant economy, with much of our crucial mining infrastructure located in these regions,” he said.
“With expansion in the two regions set to increase even further, it is vital we ensure one of the major routes to the region is safe and reliable.”
Meanwhile, re-sealing works over eight kilometres on Great Northern Highway in the Kimberley have been completed.
The works are part of a $4million upgrade of Great Northern Highway, 90km west of Fitzroy Crossing.
