20/09/2012 REPORT and FISH ID
Submitted by funngames on Thu, 2012-09-20 08:34Hi Guys,
The weather was looking promising yesterday so I told work I had uni assignments to do and instead took off for a fish.
Got to the Point Peron ramp at about 5 and got to our spot at 7. The swell was shit as it was close together and chopped up. it was pretty hard to make good progress. Doing about 10kn all the way to our spot roughly 50ks out. It probably doesnt help being in a 5.5m bowrider!
Got to the spot which was firing all day. No Dhuies though which was a pity!
Took home an 80cm Queenie (First one ever too!) a 70, 60 and 62cm pinky and 2 Nannas. Caught a heap more pinkies, small nannas and a 50 cm queenie - all released as we wanted the bigger fish. Hopefully they are making babies now!
Just got a few questions:
Foxfish - are they good eating and do they count to the baglimit?
Is the baglimit 8 demersal per boat or 2 per person? e.g we had 3 ppl on board - could we take home 6 or 8 fish?
Are queenies demersal?
I also need a fish ID. my mate caught the most retarded looking fish. It is the second image down...
Overall it was a good day. Got back to the ramo in an hour.
Cheers for reading!

Cockburn Sound Snapper Night Fish
Submitted by flexn on Tue, 2012-09-18 12:22Headed out last night on my boat from woodmans point for a night snapper session in the sound with my dad and gf. Bit of a bumpy ride with rain forecast later on. We headed to our first spot, set the anchor and began the berley trail. Nothing much was happening, except for me making rigs since I left all my premade rigs at home! Stayed about 45 minutes and decided to move on to our next spot. Despite some good readings on the sounder not alot was going on.
It was already dark by now and our chances weren't looking good. But decided to try one last spot. The sounder lit up, we set the anchor, lines in and before we could even get a burley trail going, dads line went off. Before he could grab the rod, line snapped. re-rigged him, line in again and within moments it screamed off again, a short fight and snap again. It was hard to stop these things. He got sorted, line back in the water and finally it was my turn.
After a hard fight, some big runs, and violent head shakes up came the first pinky of the night! On 30lb braid was a pretty fun fight.
Then chaos struck, with one snapper on the deck, my girlfriends reel starts screaming, she was making good ground on him and he was nearly up. my other rod goes off and dad grabs it as I'm still wrestling to get the hook out of the first. This time he was able to slow it. With the lines almost crossing over, my girlfriends line goes slack, the fish had bit through the 100lb leader leaving 1 hook behind. Meanwhile dads snapper surfaces followed by a 5-5.5 metre shark that grabbed it.
Reset the lines and my girlfriend then pulls up a big pinky measuring around the 10kg mark. Dad then hooks the biggest of the night weighing in around 11kg and measuring 97cm. Was hooked on a piece of squid on a single hook (was the snell rig that was bitten through before)
I then got sharked
And then the last pinky went to me smaller then the other 2 but well above average size.
All up we hooked 10 pinkys, boated 4 and a half. Lost 1 and a half to the shark, and lost 5. I think the 30lb may have been a bit light considering I had to try get the fish up pretty quick so they didn't get sharked.
Headed in with 4 big pinkys

Exmouth from my missus' point of view (lies)
Submitted by EL SYD on Tue, 2012-09-04 14:05
Hi guys,
We had an even better day in the boat with crazy Eddie yesterday.
I landed the first fish (again), a shark mackerel, apparently that's a big one (Pic 1).
Then Syd got runs on the board with this big GT, we're guessing high 20's maybe close to 30kg (Pic 2).
Then I answered back with an even BIGGER GT! I think mine's bigger, Syd is arguing that it was the same size. I'll let you be the judge (Pic 3). (It's so bigger!)
Then we saw a whale shark. We cast lures at it but there weren't any cobias under it :) (Pic 4).
Then Syd caught a shark mackerel and we were even (Pic 5).
It was nearly time to go home and Eddie decided we should try catch a bill fish on our way back. So I drove the boat (Pic 6) while he set up the outriggers. :D
And then I caught a sail fish! WOO HOO! It was friggin' huge and I caught it on a 15kg spin outfit. Go me. Fish of the trip (Pic 7 & 8).
And today is our last day here and we're sad cos we're not ready to come home. And it's been raining all night and all morning (how lucky are we that we got the good weather yesterday!). So we got in the car to go to the shops to get some things for the road trip back and lo and behold.....the car wouldn't start! HA HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! YIIIPPPEEEEEE!!!! We'll have to stay cos we can't drive anywhere. Alas, the local mechanic had a battery that was just the right size. Sigh. So we will be on our way tomorrow and will slowly make our way back up the coast and will be home soon.
If ever you're in Exmouth and want to go fishing in a boat just ring Eddie from Peak Sportfishing. What a legend.

Tasty bag from the sound
Submitted by beau on Mon, 2012-09-03 11:47Heres a couple fish from the sound yesterday. Was a bit quiet on the snapper front but I was happy with that lil panny on 8lb for the table. The morning started off bad when I nearly cleaned up a boat that was at anchor with no lights on in pitch blackness, when I saw the boat it was parrallel with us about 15m away on the port side, could have been a complete disaster and was pretty shaken up after. D!ckheads...

Snapper on Skis Session
Submitted by beau on Fri, 2012-08-31 11:48Flew into Perth from work on Wednesday night unfrortunately missing the rally, would have loved to tow the ski up there. Anyway, teed up a session for Thursday morning with Moking who purchased a ski only a few months ago after enquiring about jetski fishing on this forum. Plan was to be on the water early with a nice burley trail flowing by the time the sun just started to rise, which IMO is an indicator for the snapper to start to feed. I left the ramp at 5am and the anchor was set at the spot by 5:10. Moking joined me about 20mins before sunrise and by then i had a bit of a burley slick going on. I had a 9inch Zman Grubz a foot off the bottom with the rod in the rod holder while I worked a squidgie wriggler in glow with 8lb gear. As it started to get lighter i noticed the mass of yellow-tail in the burley trail and then as the sun poked its head over the hills, like clockwork my rod in the rod holder started to bounce.
I missed the first couple of hits and 10 seconds later a fish came back and hit the plastic hard, mind you this is with no movement of the plastic at all, just the rod in the rod holder in dead calm conditions. I struck hard and proceeded to put my light rod in the rod holder when that buckled over too! There was about 5 seconds where I stupidly tried to fight both fish at the same time with one of the rods between my legs before I realised the smartest move was to put the heavier rod back in the rod holder and fight on the lighter gear first. After a short tussle a nice pansize snapper in the high 50's was in the footwell of the ski. I quickly grabbed the second rod and then realised the fish had backed under the ski and wrapped my line around the transducer. After about a minute of dicking around trying to sort it out with the gaff I made the call to jump in!!
BRRRRRR!!! TO be honest I was sh!tting myself, knowing that a school of snapper was 9m below me and there was nice flowing burley trail the thought of a Great White grabbing my leg started to freak me out. Moking yelled out he was going to bring a towell over and started to reel in his line then yelled out "IM ON, IM ON!!" I managed to free the line and jump back onto the ski and bring up an identical fish to my first while Moking netted a much better specimen at around ~4kgs, his best fish on the ski so far after catching plenty of KGW, herring and tailor the last couple months. I released my second fish hoping for a similar size fish to Mokings but wasnt to be, ohwell!
Congrats Allan I'm sure it will be the first of many!!

Dunsborough's MasterBaiter
Submitted by Lamby on Sun, 2012-08-26 18:58It's been a long time between sessions on the briney for us lads down here for various reasons & I finally secured a leave pass from house construction by boss woman aided by my ol' man who came down & sorted some stuff for me (might as well have been decked out in UN peackeeping attire, the bloke is a legend!)
Seaquest made a dash to the big smoke & was back down with his pride & joy in tow after a long absence from each other, tears were shed, sweet brief love was made & Amber was not happy!
After weeks of planning due to two other trips getting the can our 3rd Musketeer got done over again & was OOA, subsequently an unhappy crew member allegedly handed in a 'Man Card Revocation' notice for a certain young bloke at Outdoor Sportz who is now known as 'Girly Sue'
I stuck with Jigs & Placcies on Saturday, this stubborn approach cost me & I have concluded you boys can stick those skirt assists square up the pooper valve all I caught was shit fish I am going back to my normal assists!
The sounder was looking good & Seaquest made the move to bait & did very well getting some good tags in but it was a hard day for our usual good dhu bangers! Frustrating but that's fishing, be good to get out again at the end of the week weather permitting to hit up the same marks (now the curse has been laid!)
A standout was this AJ, biggest I have seen this way & was called for a shark most of the way. Slayed on an Ocea Jigger 1500, yep you have to give it to the man!
One of Seaquest's Dhuies that was dispatched on ice for a feed Bring on next week
