RST Advice Please
Submitted by Kev on Thu, 2008-12-11 07:05Hopefully going to do my RST next week Tuesday. Just looking for a bit of advice from anyone in the know before I go so I'm prepared to pass first time.
How hard is it?
How long does it take?
I see there is a practical section of the test which I'm worried about I've no practical experience in boating so all I can do is study up the Skippers workbook.
They say everyone is guaranteed to pass, but is this true?
Your comments appreciated.
Thanks

Need boat fishing gear
Submitted by Kev on Wed, 2008-12-10 06:46Hi Guys/ Girls,
I need to get a hold of some fishing tackle for the boat as all I have is land based stuff. (Rods, reels, the lot!)
I dont have very much to spend (says the wife) after buying the boat, but was wondering if any of you could point me in the general direction to get me started. I'll be more than happy to get some second hand stuff if I knew what to get.
As Ive never fished off a boat and new to WA, Im clueless as to what to buy.
Is there such a thing as a general purpose boat rod/ reel to get me started out without burning the old pockets. I've seen really cheap outfits on Ebay which Im unsure of and have never heard of.
I can't say what species I'm going to be targeting as I simply don't know yet. All I know is that Im after some bigger fighting fish than you generally get from shore. Any ides of what to target and how??? I know enough that simply going out with a bucket of bait and selection of lures hoping to catch anything isn't a good way to start and will end up in disappointment.
Also like to hear how you generally fish from boats ie what bait, lures etc as all I know is bait from shore but would like to get stuck into soft plastics/ hard lures etc

Nice to meet you
Submitted by Kev on Tue, 2008-12-09 14:21Hey guys, Im a newbie to Fishwrecked and would like to quickly introduce myself.
Names Kev, been living in WA for about 4 months now.
I love this place and the fishing is awesome! I usually fish shore based, but have always dreamed of getting my own boat.
My wife made my dreams come true this week and bought me my very own boat. Early Christmas pressie. Its nothing like the boats I've seen on here, but its a boat hey and all we could afford for now.
She needs lots of TLC (boat) but I'm sure I'll get there eventually. Got her today! I know nothing about boats, but Im eager to learn. Going to book for RST next week so I can take her out. I bet It's a steep learning curve!
As I'm new to this place, I don't know anyone, so it will be nice to meet some of you on the water when I eventually get out. Any advice appreciated.

406 Mhz EPIRBS
Submitted by Tim on Thu, 2008-11-27 20:47I recently registered my 406 Mhz Epirb which I had been planning on doing for over a year so thought I should put a reminder up for those who havent done it yet and also for those still to upgrade.
The old 121.5 Mhz epirbs are being phased out and from 1st February 2009, alerts from these beacons will no longer be received by the Cosaps-Sarsat satelite system.
EPIRBs (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons) are compulsory safety equipment when offshore and in other documented areas. The 121.5 Mhz EPIRB was, until recent years, significantly cheaper than the more sophisticated 406 Mhz type so naturally was the most popular. Due to this fact it is likely a lot of people will need to upgrade.
The 406 Mhz EPIRB offers enhanced emergency location features.
- A 406MHz EPIRB locates your position to within 5 kms as opposed to 20 kms using a 121.5 MHZ beacon.
- The 406MHz beacon is coded with your name, boat and contact details which helps searchers know what type of craft they are searching for.
- The alert time for 406s is usually seconds as opposed to hours for a 121.5 MHz beacon.
- False alarms have been a major problem with 121.5 MHz beacons with an estimated 97 in 100 alerts due to faulty beacons, accidental or malicious activation or other spurious causes. The digital 406MHZ is much less prone to some of these causes and in the event of an alert the rescue authorities have the owners contact details to rule out false alerts and also get possible vital information about a genuine alert.
- 406MHz beacons can also be purchased with extra features like automatic operation and built in GPS receiver to pinpoint the EPIRB’s position.
Australian residents owning a 406MHz Epirb must register their EPIRB with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA). They have the details and relevant forms on their website. Non residents of Australia have to register in their country of residence.
Registration is easy and only takes a few minutes. Heres the link to the website - https://www.beacons.amsa.gov.au/
You will need some info off your EPIRB like serial number, model etc.

new to boating needs help
Submitted by WhiteShark on Wed, 2008-11-26 19:20Hi guys i just got my first boat quintrex ali 4.7m powered by 2X20hp mariner motors (manual start)
got some questions i tried to ask in another forum but they just got bored so no body answeres me anymore :) but i think you guys will help me out
1- i need a battery to opreate fishfinder+GPS+navi lights+ small light (the engines are manual start) i don't know what kind of batteries should i go for some guys recommend regular battery as the load is low and other say deep-cycle which one would you prefer and what ampier?
2- i tow the boat with my toyota camry 2002 V4 and i lunched the boat from Mt Pleasant, Deepwater Point Boat Ramp and it was very easy i've checked hillaryas and it seems very easy too but i didn't try it yet, i don't know if it is possible from safety bay as i didn't check it out yet, which ramp would you guys suggest if i wanted to go to the ocean sometimes and which one would be better fishing spots?
3- i wanna buy a fishfinder(sounder) either second hand or new, which one would you suggest? (budget $100-$200)
thats all and i know i'll come up with some other questions soon :) sorry if i asked so many stupid questions but hey i'm new :) have no where else to ask

changing trailer tyres?
Submitted by till on Tue, 2008-11-25 20:08Hi,
my boat has a whacky trailer, its got independant axles, each with a coil and airshocks and 14" tyres. Now, thats great on a track, but on shallow ramps, it makes launching tedious.
Are there any common sort of tyres used on boat trailers, say 10-12", that would support a 4.2m tinny with a 50hp on it fine? I'd probably prefer to get something in a common size and I can always get a special insert put in the right rim, just so it matches my hubs.
Ta,
till

SWITCH PANEL LIGHTS
Submitted by Flat Chat on Mon, 2008-11-24 15:15Q. and assistance please regarding BEP backlight 6 switch panel.
Does anybody else experience some of the switches LED lights staying on for a few moments only gradually dying rather than off straight away? Getting differing opinions on this being "normal" and "ok" to " nah somethings wrong!"
AND WHY would this be happening? Only 2 do it!

New GPS/chartplotter time
Submitted by HuggyB on Sat, 2008-11-08 12:26Well I finally bit the bullet and decided it's time to upgrade the electronics on my boat (idle money in my account and the impending price rises have forced my hand!). The Eagle sounder and Humminbird GPS that came with the boat are gone, in it place is a newly purchased Furuno FCV620 and by the end of next week a new GPS/Chart plotter to stand next to it. I am going with a budget of ~$1000 tops for the new GPS.
Have narrowed down my choices to Lowrance (5300Ci) or Garmin (GPSmap 450). Given that I can pick up a 5300Ci for $450 (on sale @ BCF) v $800 for the 450, the Lowrance is slightly in the lead at this stage, plus the 4" v 5" screen. The difference will buy me a Navionics gold card for the whole of Australia. The bluechart card is going to be another $200 or so on top of the Garmin cost.
Is there anything patently obvious that I have overlooked? Any other options I should look at in this price bracket?

Honda tilt trim switch
Submitted by feral1975 on Tue, 2008-10-28 19:26Ok , after the trip out the other day i noticed that my tilt trim guage wasn't working on my console , but the motor still trims as I mainly go by the engine revs not the guage . I lifted up the motor and under the mount on the right hand side is the trim guage switch but when i move the paddle forward and look at the guage nothing happens and you have to push the paddle all the way forward till it will release back , any guru's out there or am I looking at the wrong switch , its a bf50 four stroke
Extreme Seal
Submitted by Pete D on Mon, 2008-10-20 12:38Don't ya just hate water pushing up under your clears and dripping onto electronics, those secret GPS spots scribbled on paper or into ya favourite beverage. I did, but have finally found something (at a reasonable cost) which fixed the problem.
Bruce from Just Covers in Balcatta came up with a new product - "Extreme Seal". He did a great job.
The seal is just sewn onto your existing clears and seals very well onto the windscreen (curve in my case, which is harder to seal).
Profile of extreme seal;
Sewn in;
Outside view;
Not sure of the cost of the extreme seal as I got about $500 worth of other stuff done, so if interested, just contact Bruce.
Cheers Pete

Electronics price rise
Submitted by Tim on Mon, 2008-10-13 15:32After talking to the guys at the boat show and a few others it looks like marine electronics is about to sky rocket with a possible 20% or there abouts price increase happening in the next few weeks due to the exchange rate with the yen.
If your looking at buying soon I would be having a look now and talking to your supplier as it will be hundreds of dollars dearer in the near future.

Transducer Ticking
Submitted by JoRn on Fri, 2008-10-10 09:42Hey guys,
I recently acquired a navman 6600 off mightymouse and fixed it into my new boat. My boat is a small centre console and the transducer mounting plate was a bit on the small side, so i reversed the bracket on the the transducer to fit on the plate...perfect.
I took the boat out on wednesday, all systems go....stopped the boat to do some squidding. And there was this constant ticking took me awhile to figure out what it was, but it turned out to be the transducer! My dads has a furuno and that doest tick!
Is this normal? or have i done something i shouldnt have?
is there antying i can do that can stop it, gets rather annoying.
Hopefully someone one this forum who has a navman sounder can tell me if they have the same issue/problem
Thanks

two fuel tanks?
Submitted by HuggyB on Thu, 2008-10-09 16:09I currently have a 45L undefloor tank which does me nicely for potting around the Sound, but if I want to head out deeper I have to take a couple of jerry cans on board - less than desirable. I need range on a budget!
I initially considered putting a larger tank in place of the 45L one, but at $400 a pop for an 80/90L tak I was a bit put off.
So my thought is this - buy a second 45L tank ($150) and strap it down underneath my outboard splash well and run two tanks for a total of 90L. Now is it just a case of teeing the new line onto the existing line with a primer bulb? Or would I need to have a switch to choose which tank to draw from?
Outboard is a oil injected 70hp Yamaha 2 stroke (1991) if that makes any difference.

How far out?
Submitted by paulpowell3540 on Fri, 2008-09-26 20:37I'm fairly new to boats and have recently bought my first one
I have a Quintrex Estuary Angler 4:2 with honda 25 HP 4 stroke (Radio etc) in A1 condition.
None of the manufactures can give an idea of how far out you can go in this type of rig (probably for legal reasons?). I know the weather plays a vital part but on a reasonably calm day how far out from the shore would this rig take you for fishing?

Rock flickup onto a fiberglass hull
Submitted by Stev0 on Wed, 2008-09-24 09:42Hey guys, I'm a noob to the forums but think they are great source of local information so i was wondering if anyone had any tips for me.
I have a 4.7m gemini (see attached) which up until this year has only been used as a tender for the old mans larger boat (40ft Caribbean), this coming winter/spring we have been making a pretty good effort to take it down to cockburn for some squid action, we took it out to five fathom but all we caught was my mates foot (had to take him to hospital, was pretty funny).
I am wanting to take it down south to busso this weekend as its looking like a killer Sunday but am a bit worried about the rock flickup onto the fglass hull, does anyone have any tricks or hints that might help me out. Ive thought about getting some carpet and tying it up around the bow in a V but not sure about wind resistance causing problems if we dont do it properly.
Anyway if anyone has dealt with this before their help would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Stevo
