In development
Submitted by Commodore Marine on Fri, 2008-06-20 15:54OK Guys, Feedback and input wanted.
This may open a can of worms, but the best way to know what people want is to ask them
At Commodore Marine we are developing a new boat that is aimed a the fisho and as such we need input. The input we would like is things that you find good and bad on a boat and how you would set it up. Now I know that everyone has their own likes and dislikes so let not ridicule other thoughts but express you own for the purpose of building a better boat.
The details of the boat from a size will be kept under wraps for the moment, but it is a trailer boat. The other thing is that we will look at the suggestions in regards to our existing line of boats.
We will be asking a few of the people responding to come to a couple of meetings regarding the boat so we can walk and talk over it.
We look forward to your input.

Help with Lowrance GPS/Sounder
Submitted by Archie on Tue, 2008-06-17 20:22Hey All,
My Lowrance LCX27C GPS/Sounder is playing up. It comes up with a "GPS module not responding" message when it fires up. I've checked the GPS module and it's fine. I was wondering if anyone out there has an LCX25 or LCX 27 that would mind helping out. I've been told that either the cables/T connectors or the head unit itself could be the problem.
Any help would be appreciated

Star Boats pictures/info?
Submitted by till on Thu, 2008-06-12 20:28
Hi,
just wondering if anyone has any snaps/info/experience with these, just by chance. A few seem to turn up in the Quokka on occcasions, mostly 10 - 20yrs old.
I hear they were locally-built, but the business has since closed. I also heard the designer later went off to build some high speed cat ferries down Henderson way, but having done a lot of commercial boats on the way. I'm also told that the Penguins ala Auslobster are done by a few ex-employees of the same firm.
Just trying to get an idea of how they shape up, beamwidth, deadrise etc and how they perform at sea.
Ta,

Logging on
Submitted by Rob_Seed on Sat, 2008-06-07 23:44G'day,
Can somone give me some pointers regarding logging on and off with the sea rescue?
From my TL3 course I did about 5 years ago I remember the following things you have to state,
- Fuel quantity
- How many people on bord
- expected arrival time
- intended destination
- Call sighn
- Size of your boat?
Im just having drama with the order, Have I missed anything? If somone could give me an example of the conversation they have when logging on an off it would be great.
Cheers

yet another boat thread: whose 5-5.5m alu centre console on the cheap?
Submitted by till on Tue, 2008-06-03 17:38
Hi,
just me thinking with my mouth open, any advice offered appreciated.
I've had my eyes on whats in the quokka, online in various sources, and mostly been looking at used because money is an object (that I have little of). I really want something up to 5.5m, pref over 5m, as then its easily trailerable, yet we can take it a fair way offshore. Our tow vehicle can handle the weight, and I don't think I'd have to go for a tandem and trailer brakes at that size either which may save a few bucks.
Secondhand I haven't really seen much compelling, and I notice that a lot of the boats in that size are rolled, not plate boats which would probably be preferred.
I was surprised to see a local plate boat builder can do up a bare hull for the following prices; 5m/$10k, 5.3m/$13k & 5.6m/$16k. I guess a trailer is around $2k-3k new, and then is motor and fitout. I can poach some of the safety gear from my brother's old dingy, that should save a few bucks too.
Are those prices typical for a bare bones centre console? Who else makes them? Who should be avoided =)

Marine cd player
Submitted by Jack on Tue, 2008-06-03 07:33Howdy people, Im chasing a bit of info on the GR 968 Marine cd player. (Pretty sure it's a GME) During my last trip to Can't Tell Ya bay my stereo stopped producing sound. I can see on the front of the stereo that the cd or radio is playing but no sound. I have hooked up another speaker to it and it wont produce sound either. I have put the Multimeter on the wires coming out of the back of the stereo and it's only putting out 0.82 volts to the speakers. I was wondering if anyone could do the same and see what there's is putting out or if anyone knew roughly what it should be putting out before i pulled it to bit's. Any help would be great.
Cheers
Jack

Do You need an RST to Hire a Boat?
Submitted by Dreamweaver on Mon, 2008-05-26 08:51This question was asked a while back, so I flicked an email to the DPI RST coordinator. Thought it would be worthwhile info.
Basically:
NO - If it's a hire non trailorable boat (house boat, pontoon boat) in sheltered waters. Motor size not applicable.
YES - If it's a hire boat that is trailorable etc and has a motor of 6Hp or more. (edit - correction - replaced 'less' with 'more' :) )
- here was her reply:
Hi Mr Molloy
Thanks for your interest and we will certainly be looking at updating our webpage ASAP to reflect your enquiry.
In February 2006, the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure
introduced the Recreational Skipper’s Ticket (RST), a competency based
qualification aimed at ensuring recreational boaters have the minimum
skills necessary to be safe on the water.
Under the new regulations, the skipper of a registrable recreational
vessel with a motor exceeding 4.5kW (6Hp) will be required to hold an
RST. Skippers on vessels that do not have a motor, or vessels with a
motor 4.5kW (6Hp) or less will not be required to hold an RST.
In addition, skippers aged between 14 and 16 years old will be
restricted in their use of a boat to daylight hours and to a maximum
speed of 8 knots.
The regulations supporting the RST come into effect on 1 April 2008 (1 April 2007 for under 25’s).
People travelling in Western Australia from overseas or interstate will
be able to operate on their boat driver’s licence or certificate issued
by their home state for up to 3 months, after which they will need to
apply for a Western Australian RST.
Vessel hire and drive businesses operate under licence to DPI and
are governed by the WA Marine (Hire and Drive Vessels) Regulations
1983.
All hire and drive vessels are subject to pre-operation and annual
inspections by officers or representatives of DPI and are required to
carry mandatory safety equipment.
Hire and drive licences issued by DPI also mandate a range of operating
parameters, including the minimum age of hirer (must be 17 years or
older), hours and area of operation, and vessel type, depending on the
classification of the hire and drive operation. There are three broad
categories of hire and drive operations:
Hire and drive licence holders will be affected by the RST
initiative and operations will need to be altered depending on there
licence type as follows:
· any hire and drive vessels with an engine capacity of 4.5 kW
(6Hp) or less, or no motor attached, will NOT be affected by the RST;
· vessels hired from a “trailerable hire and drive business” (that
is hook up the boat and trailer, drive away and go wherever you want in
the boat) with an engine capacity greater then 4.5 kW (6Hp) will
require at least one person on board having the responsibility of
skipper/master to hold an RST when operating in Western Australian
navigable waters;
· vessels hired from an “on site hire and drive licence”,
(including houseboats, pontoons and personal water craft (PWC)
operating in restricted areas) regardless of engine capacity, will not
require a skipper to hold an RST subject to appropriate alternative
safety interventions being in place. All on-site hire and drive
operators will need to provide training and assessment to each person
operating a hired vessel. This can be in the form of a safety briefing
which must be approved by the Department for Planning and
Infrastructure. In addition, operations hiring out PWC will need to
ensure each water craft has an operating safety cut out system on each
vessel.
All safety training and assessment delivered by the hire and drive
operators must be approved by the Department and cover off the safety
aspects of the RST and take into account the area of operation. The
safety training and assessment are auditable items for their hire and
drive licence renewal. If a business fails to meet any requirements
their licence can be revoked or not renewed.

Would be good when out for Mullas etc in the sound or heating up some food between drops. Looks like an easy way to warm up your food while fishing without the bother of gas stoves.

Gunwale Rubber
Submitted by carassius on Tue, 2008-05-13 20:03Anybody ever changed out gunwale rubber before? Mines dry & perished & starting to break away, also showing cosmetic fibreglss damage on the top of the rubber.
I'm sure I can source it from Clark Rubber or BIAS, but do I need to use glue or resin to help it hold shape? Any tips or dos & don'ts will be very helpful?

Anchor rope
Submitted by Steve Richards on Wed, 2008-05-07 16:23G'day all, just a thought i had today while giving the boat a bit of tender loving care, when was the last time you took ALL of your anchor rope out of the locker and checked it?? I did mine and was surprised at how many leaves, bits of seaweed and general dust/dirt and bugs was in there. The drain hole was fairly clogged so the whole rope locker got a tidy up and the rope checked as it went back in.Have fun.
