Extreme Seal

Don't ya just hate water pushing up under your clears and dripping onto electronics, those secret GPS spots scribbled on paper or into ya favourite beverage.  I did, but have finally found something (at a reasonable cost) which fixed the problem.

Bruce from Just Covers in Balcatta came up with a new product - "Extreme Seal".  He did a great job.

The seal is just sewn onto your existing clears and seals very well onto the windscreen (curve in my case, which is harder to seal).

Profile of extreme seal;

Sewn in;

Outside view;

Not sure of the cost of the extreme seal as I got about $500 worth of other stuff done, so if interested, just contact Bruce.

Cheers Pete

Electronics price rise

After talking to the guys at the boat show and a few others it looks like marine electronics is about to sky rocket with a possible 20% or there abouts price increase happening in the next few weeks due to the exchange rate with the yen.

If your looking at buying soon I would be having a look now and talking to your supplier as it will be hundreds of dollars dearer in the near future.

Transducer Ticking

Hey guys,

I recently acquired a navman 6600 off mightymouse and fixed it into my new boat. My boat is a small centre console and the transducer mounting plate was a bit on the small side, so i reversed the bracket on the the transducer to fit on the plate...perfect.

I took the boat out on wednesday, all systems go....stopped the boat to do some squidding. And there was this constant ticking took me awhile to figure out what it was, but it turned out to be the transducer! My dads has a furuno and that doest tick!

Is this normal? or have i done something i shouldnt have?

is there antying i can do that can stop it, gets rather annoying.

Hopefully someone one this forum who has a navman sounder can tell me if they have the same issue/problem

Thanks

two fuel tanks?

I currently have a 45L undefloor tank which does me nicely for potting around the Sound, but if I want to head out deeper I have to take a couple of jerry cans on board - less than desirable. I need range on a budget!

I initially considered putting a larger tank in place of the 45L one, but at $400 a pop for an 80/90L tak I was a bit put off.

So my thought is this - buy a second 45L tank ($150) and strap it down underneath my outboard splash well and run two tanks for a total of 90L. Now is it just a case of teeing the new line onto the existing line with a primer bulb? Or would I need to have a switch to choose which tank to draw from?

Outboard is a oil injected 70hp Yamaha 2 stroke (1991) if that makes any difference.

Show us a pic of your boat !

Hi guys thought i would start of a thread, for everyone to post a picture of there boats, yaks ect . That way then i think alot more people might see people out on the water/ramps and know who you are..after seeing your pic on here. Also would be great to hear the story behing the name of your boat to Also check out other peoples set ups, that may give other people some ideas.

Well here is my tub..her name is "The Wedding Fund"..because basically it was brought with money we are saving for our wedding next year. Then about 4 months ago we needed a new motor...mmm...thanks wedding fund !

How far out?

I'm fairly new to boats and have recently bought my first one

I have a Quintrex Estuary Angler 4:2 with honda 25 HP 4 stroke (Radio etc) in A1 condition.

None of the manufactures can give an idea of how far out you can go in this type of rig (probably for legal reasons?). I know the weather plays a vital part but on a reasonably calm day how far out from the shore would this rig take you for fishing?

Rock flickup onto a fiberglass hull

Hey guys, I'm a noob to the forums but think they are great source of local information so i was wondering if anyone had any tips for me.

I have a 4.7m gemini (see attached) which up until this year has only been used as a tender for the old mans larger boat (40ft Caribbean), this coming winter/spring we have been making a pretty good effort to take it down to cockburn for some squid action, we took it out to five fathom but all we caught was my mates foot (had to take him to hospital, was pretty funny).

I am wanting to take it down south to busso this weekend as its looking like a killer Sunday but am a bit worried about the rock flickup onto the fglass hull, does anyone have any tricks or hints that might help me out. Ive thought about getting some carpet and tying it up around the bow in a V but not sure about wind resistance causing problems if we dont do it properly.

Anyway if anyone has dealt with this before their help would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Stevo

Fuel Economy

Been talking to different outboard dealers about the improvement in fuel economy switching from 2 stroke carburetted to a new 4 stroke or high tech 2 stroke. They all claim 50% or better fuel economy but know one will guarantee it. My question is has anyone taken a 5 year old 115 hp carburetted 2 stroke off a 20 foot fibreglass boat and replaced it with a 115hp  4 stroke or new high tech 2 stroke that can give me exact improvements in fuel economy?
thanks
Darryl

Furuno FCV-600l Instalation guide

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the FCV-600l Sounder.

You basically have 3 wires. White, Black and shielding.

Nothing is mentioned in the manual about wiring the unit or any wiring diagrams supplied.

I know I don't need to wire the shielding, but that leaves the black or the white to power and earth.

Sure, taking a guess Black - earth, white - power, its only a 50/50 guess but I would rather not go the wrong way and blow the unit.

Hiyas,

How heavy can one go with an outboard?

I have a reasonably old tub (Bell Boy) that was renovated somewhat before I bought it to be a decked side console. It came with a 1991 oil injected 70hp yamaha 2 stroke that runs well etc etc, but in the near future the plan is to go 4 stroke or maybe 2 stroke DI.

Initially my thought was "thats easy, replace like with like". So I hunted around to see what my options where around this hp rating (70/75/80). On the average I was looking at around 160 - 180kg of engine weight, except the 75hp E-TEC which came in at 145kg (and I could even head up to the 90hp E-TEC as it weighs the same as the 75hp). I even have the option of going the optimax in this hp bracket.

So then I hunted around to find out what my current engine weighs and uh oh, it around 102kg. So thats got me thinking, is it feasible to hang an up to 80% heavier engine off the transom? Will it be too heavy (gut feeling is yes)? How do I find out what my transom could safely handle?

If I have to go with 100kg or thereabouts, it somewhat limits my options to be honest. Honda and Suzuki (my two initial choices) will need to drop back to 50hp engines to break weight (100/110kg), leaving me with  60hp Mariner/Mercury/Yamaha/E-TEC all hovering around that 110kg mark.

Conopy Clears

Can anyone give me some info on cleaning my clears. I'm a bit concerned that I could scratch them or smudge them worse than they are now if I use standard detergent.

Cheers

Fitting out the " Fish Finger"

Ok as a few of the guys here know and with help I have been extending the floors in my centre console to do away with the bench flotation seat's that were fitted from factory , this required new floor subframe at the front and rear aswell as manufacturing of an engine well at the back to cater for the odd wave which comes over the back while trolling , so here it is and bear in mind the whole lot was done by me in the back yard with a few cartons of piss and idea's from some mates

The front support's

Old floor removed

The new floor in place

The new carpeted engine well

Mariner outboard service/boat repairs

Hi,

I'm located in Mt Lawley, and obviously don't mind driving around a little bit for good service, but does anyone want to recommend me a place for motor/boat service? I might get them to look over the boat, and perform a service on the motor, perhaps fit some equipment.

I seem to recall someone around Hillarys was recommended, but I can't remember their name.

Ta,

Finally launched - and leaked

Finally got the old Quintrex launched on Geographe Bay yesterday with no fanfare given it looks like i should have taken it to the tip rather than Monaghan's ramp. It performed extremely well as far as i was concerned though the son's mate who is a boatie said i could get more revs out of the 35hp with a smaller prop. Being mainly concerned with how the boat went i let the team down by bringing none of Spess'es super burley and only having some very old occy and prawns. Still managed a couple of hook ups that snapped the 5lb line like string but nothing else other than pickers. I was more than a bit ashamed of the bait situation when a school of Pinks circled the boat for a few minutes - including a couple of whoppers. At least i know a couple of spots and when all is up to scratch boatwise with a floor and some welds - hopefully it's look out.

I have one query someone can perhaps advise on - at full tilt there was a leak on a seam where the strake runs along the hull - nothing major - but when i was cleaning the hull down, i found a line of corrosion running down the hull on the inside of the strake. Is this common with Quintrex Fishabouts? I am having a boat builder look at it and hopefully a weld run along it will cure the problem rather than start looking for another hull.

Welding Ali boats with below deck fuel tanks

Boat Help

Hey Guys,

For all you boat guru's out there.

I've finally semi decided what boat I want. 4.3-5m centre console.

Im due to see a few more this week, however theres 3 boats i am pretty keen on.

the first boat is a bermuda centre console 1996 with a 50Hp Mercury engine. The boat is in really good condition, with hardly any electronics not a problem. The engine has had 350 hours on the clock. Thats the only real downer, the trailor and everything else is really good.

He advertised it for 11k, and told me that he purchased it for 12k 3 years ago....hmmmm

The other boat is down in bunbury (so far to go) but its 1999 quintrex side console with a new engine for 10k.

or this one

Can someone give me some thoughts on these boats?

is 350hours alot of hours?

RST Training

Hi All,

I am looking to purchase my own boat soon and need to get my RST ticket.

I was looking at the variety of Trainers and courses available and Bob Slight boat school offered a number of courses.

2 day course - Recreational Skill
3 day course - Sea Skill

My old man has his own boat and I've been boating for awhile but never taken the boat out myself, so as for rules regulations and stuff go im pretty inexperienced.

The 3 day course is what im interested in, as one of the training modules is "reef identification" im assuming this is where to identify reefy areas, danger zones etc.

Do you guys think its worthwhile paying 70 bucks more just for that? or paying for the normal training and ask them during the training excercise.

Anyone recommendation on any other training courses? or RST providers?

Fraser boats

Just to give Fishwrecked the heads up, Commodore Marine has purchased and been repairing the molds for 9, 17 to 19 foot Frasers.

These will all be released at the Mandurah Boat show as either a full drive away package or as a kit so that clients can build their own. Commodore will then run classes to show how to  build and finish their boats.

The 5 boats being released at the Mandurah show are

17 foot center console

17 foot walk through cab

19 foot center console

19 foot walk through cab

19 foot bowrider

The 17 footers will be under $30,000 as a complete drive away package and the 19 footers will be under $35,000 for drive away packages.

The kit boats will be available in two packages

Joined hull and deck with gunwhale rubber, windscreen, fuel tank and wiring loom or:

Joined hull and deck with gunwhale rubber, windscreen, fuel tank, wiring loom and a kit boax full of the remaining parts for fitout, such as cleats, steering, pumps etc.

This will allow the client to source their own motor and trailer and they could be second hand to get their project on the water, and its quite feasable that this could be done for under $25,000.

You will be surprised at the value this represents and more importantly a very solid product.

Full details will be at the Mandurah Boat Show

Outboard fuel

Since today appears the day for me to show how much i don't know about things, let's add outboards to computers. I have an Evinrude Elan 35hp tiller steer which i am going to fire up for the first time on Sunday. I am told a 50-1 mix is the go - standard unleaded or premium or premium 98? And any advice on the best oil?

New Boat Trailer

Time to consider a new trailer for my boat, had a quote for very specific type purpose built for a UB from Roadmaster boat trailers for around $7500. Anyone know of any others I can try for a quote also?

Cheers
